In the 1930s my grandfather, a plumber and steamfitter, together with other Union members to build one another's homes. For example, my grandfather helped lay the cement foundation with a friend who did that professionally. Then when it was his turn to have a house built, my grandfather installed all plumbing and heating throughout his home. With this collective labor, home ownership became far more reasonable. This is something few people practice and benefit from today.
This interview was fascinating. What a testimony and inspiration. I’m so glad you asked the question about living somewhere where it’s often cloudy. ❤🙏🏻Val C
Enjoyed this discussion, very helpful and encouraging!! Thankful for your integrity in your decision and you and your wife taking this path! It gives me hope.
Hi Tag! Love this collab cuz I'm a solar feign, always looking to up my game! Also love your wisdom, insight and inspiration. Thanks HF! Look forward every Saturday morning to you guys. Carolyn aka NOLA Girl
Listening from NY, what a fantastic story. I will do it as soon as I return to my country, Italy. I have already a little land (2 acres)and a house. NY is amazing when you are young, a trap when you become middle aged .
A lot to think about here. Excellent show. I would love to have a follow-up with Josh and Carolyn discussing power consumption on their homestead. How to balance food preservation/food security for that many people VS running the freeze dryer, freezers, etc. Have you ever run electricity monitors to see what the consumption per appliance is for your property?
I did everything you are talking about back in 2013 in CHILE SOUTH AMERICA! MORE FREE. LESS TAXES (no property Tax) Smaller big (Little) brother. NO PERMITS NO INSPECTIONS. NO POWER OR WATER BILLS OR SEWER all off grid. No Insurance requirements mandated by the government (Auto /home/ life/ company or business .... NONE) NO CRIME.... the last murder with in 45 min circle of my house was over 2 years ago. The town near us has NEVER HAD A MURDER. So we are safe! No raw milk laws. No permits for farming DID I SAY NO PROPERTY TAX?.... No construction certificate of occupancy needed... we built our own house. We did not need to ask the government or get permission or inspections or approvals. As a veteran we looked at the former USA and culturally we saw a wasteland. Corruption has over run the former USA. Hey Everyone is a racist... just ask! We are able to prioritize our life now (GOD / Family / ............................ country) We live in a Christian country that just recently sadly approved abortion, one of the last hold outs on the planet. We have no mortgage. Land is cheaper here overall. We raise very much of our own food / meat and vegg. I love what you are doing but I just feel like we are doing it better. There are very few people here in Chile, but it is a FIRST WORLD COUNTRY (Fiber Optic and Power and such). We no longer live in the center of the nuclear bulls eye. We have little to no stress. Chileans Love North Americans and live is nice and slow for us. Plus Chile is spectacularly beautiful. I help people move here. We have a wonderful Chat group to help people relocate to Chile. Not expensive or hard to join but private. We love it here. Jim
Interesting concepts. Although I am not convinced about some aspects of what was discussed, it definitely gives one some food for thought. One will always be dependent on some sort of grid, it just depends on what one is comfortable being dependent on. Good podcast.
This is wonderful and a great story all around … my only thought is he obviously had a lot of money. Not everyone comes with this blessing. Thank you for sharing!
@@spoolsandbobbins Yes, but he could have kept it all to himself. Instead he's building a community by selling off parts of his original land to help give a life of true freedom for others. There is an off grid town (smaller, tho still acres) being 'built' in UT.
Love the panty chat sessions. How do seniors 72 and 79 Homestead? Or is it to late? I have a vegetable garden, I can meals and just started fermenting. That's about it. We live in MN. and have a few acres. I have read many books, but that's it. I love my homestead magazine😊
We are 75 and 54. We do what we can at our own pace. Chickens, big garden, can, dehydrate, exchange goods/services. Stay/become debt free. Make frugality a way of life. Many blessings to all striving to live a Life Done Free!
Off grid in the hot South is a whole new ball game. Air conditioning is huge. I would be happy if I could cool one room and have enough electricity to run the refrigerator, freezers, etc.! What would that look like?
I’m in southern Oklahoma and you are right. Summer is difficult but we do have nice fall and spring and a mild winter. I grew veggies all the way into December and left my herbs outside thru November
Exactly! Central Texas here and 2 years ago we lost power in January for 5 hours overnight and the house temperature had jumped up 8 degrees overnight before the sun even rose!
3 to 4 250 watt solar panels for 1 freezer. It will still be powered on cloudy days. The same for a fridge, 3 to 4 panels. I can't answer about the AC.
Another great video. We have a source for hydroelectric most years and through most of the year except a hard freeze in winter. Would love to learn more about those type of systems. Does Tad have a plug and play version for that???
There are many of us that had to choose what the Lord put onto our hearts. That is why there are shortages in health care and good workers. Just like they punished people in the military. God bless all in Jesus Christ's name.
I'd like to push back in the thought that communal living doesn't work. There are many intentional communities in the US. Twin Oaks in VA is the longest one. The Hutterites are excellent at it. There's a small community down the road from me that is intentional in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
Good on you mate that's when you started being your own man not their man. I'm a health worker that left in Australia I refused to be part of injecting people
It would be nice to talk about the affordability of Health IInsurance. As a financial manager could you put together a holding company to establish a nation wide system for Health insurance for the Homesteading community?
Taxes also pay for things like infrastructure that aren't commercially viable to build otherwise and be free. Your internet bill would be sky high without it and you wouldn't be able to set foot of your property onto a road without paying some multinational for it otherwise. Toll roads and bridges aren't really paying the cost of build and maintainance now with amounts people can pay. There is good value in paying taxes, just who pays how much is where there should be serious questions asked.
Paying taxes is necessary to pay teachers cops salaries. Also ss and disability. Tax the rich as well. And stop giving all those pay raises to Congress, senetors. Etc let them live within their means as well as we do.
Anything comes down to that “one arbitrary moment “. It could be anything. It happened to be mandatory shots. All life is based like that. I’ve quit jobs for what I thought were terrible policies. Eventually, it come down to morale choices. I’m happy you made yours, I’m happy I made mine. The ability to make choices in life is to be free of debt at all costs. I could walk away from jobs bc I have never allowed myself in debt. It does free you
Never heard it called freestanding, but it is lawful if done correctly. And now that SCOTUS ruled against both the Chevron doctrine, and the EPA, which by default means all "government" agencies, it's also legal if done correctly. Lawful and legal are not the same.
FYI couldnt tell you where i heard it ... but something about Solar systems giving off EMFs. If they are giving these away free in CA, you know something is fishy!!!
Would love to see him (since he's in Tornado Alley, aka Kansas) build a monolithic dome as Community Center! They are virtually indestructible & extremely energy efficient! Also, do you have any recommendations for those of us who are older and looking to start? Husband and I are in our mid-50's and are preparing to buy "our little piece of heaven" in 2025. While I've always had BIG dreams, watching my mother age has been a wake up call that what we could accomplish in our 20's is NOT what we can accomplish today, and will be even less 15-20 years from now.
I love everything about what you are doing, but in New Hampshire the Freestaters are undermining public education. Homeschooling is not an option for everyone so public schools are still so important for many.
You know, farming used to be the common man’s livelihood. Now you see all these businessmen with financial freedom and educations playing king of the hill. Go where your skills are needed to make society better for the nation. You’re leaving room for immigrants to fill the urban areas and cities.
40:30 you could go to Craig's list and buy a stationary bike everytime one is on sale and slowly hook those into the system. I'm kinda joking, you can't make much power on a bike I have heard, lol. This is a great episode and I will subscribe to his channel. I have been looking at the Ozark Mountains since I am stuck here near StL athe moment. I am the only prepper in my family. Most of them watch tennis and play golf and ... I must add, do not deserve to live if the $ crashes in value. I would recommed gettng at least a 1000K , maybe 2 0r 3K of offgrid on eBay. Enough for the necessities.
Conundrum: How is using a solar system for energy (because without the "system" to make a solar system for which you draw energy to create electricity, you cannot create electricity) is being "off grid". Someone, please, explain how using a solar system, inverter, batteries is truthfully "off grid". It would be interesting to follow from raw material to manufacturing to market each item that we use.
When he said 50 people got together and built a home in 2 days. I teared up. Moved by the power of community to help a neighbor.
In the 1930s my grandfather, a plumber and steamfitter, together with other Union members to build one another's homes. For example, my grandfather helped lay the cement foundation with a friend who did that professionally.
