Reising Model 60 - A Wartime Semiauto Carbine

  • The Reising Model 60 was the semiautomatic-only variant of the Reising Model 50 submachine gun. Offered side by side with the submachine guns, the Model 60 was also chambered for .45ACP and used the same magazines and a closed-bolt operating system that was identical except for the lack of a full auto option on the safety/selector switch.
    The Model 60 was made between 1943 and 1949, and only about 3250 were made in total. They were used by a variety of factory guards, railway guards, and police units during WWII - people who needed a firearm, but not necessarily the amount of firepower available from a fully automatic one. H&R promoted the Model 60 (with its 18.25 inch barrel) as a particularly accurate gun suitable for making precise shots at longer ranges that could be done with an SMG.

    Ian has the greatest way of putting things. I can just see it now: Some sleepy overnight security guard is sitting at his desk eating a doughnut while monitoring video camera feeds when he suddenly sees a flood of Fallschirmjäger storming the building.
    At least he's well-armed with a Zip 22 and a Cobray Terminator!

      @CommodoreFan64 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Agreed, and also just make the stock out of more cost effective lighter weight materials, and market it to security guards, and people for home defense, and I could see it selling well enough to make a small profit if it's $350 and under.

      Pistol caliber carbines are making a comeback, and something like the model 60 could find a strong market someplace like California since it doesn't have that evil black plastic and pistol grip. And, hell, I`d buy one. As long as they didn't go crazy on price like the new M1 Carbines.

    • @sergeantbigmac
      @sergeantbigmac 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Idk, to make a modern reproduction to the quality of the old it would likely be close to modern M1 repros in price. Theres no way its going to be under 350, realistically probably double that.

    • @sergeantbigmac
      @sergeantbigmac 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes youre right about that, but I think the initial tooling up cost is what would really determine if a company took the risk. I guess salable price point depends on what an individual person thinks reasonable? Im basing this off other similar guns like the sub2k which MSRPs new for more than $500. And that has sold well, who knows how well this will sell... So is $5-600 reasonable for most people? idk

      Laird Cummings - This would actually be fine as-is here in California if the magazine was permanently blocked to 10 rounds. It can use detachable magazines because it doesn't have any evil features. I wouldn't mind having one.

    I have one of these, bought it years ago, I had 2 of them but at the range one day a man offered me way more than I paid for it, or it was worth, but I still have the one 60 its very accurate, and has been to the range many times, I buy Military Surplus .45 cal ammo for it, I'll keep this one in the collection for good. Now these are crazy expensive, I remember seeing these for sale in the 1970s and 1980s for under $ 200 Bucks should of grabbed 4 or 5 of them, back then.

      In 10mm and
      .45acp and accepts 1911 mags....
      The way the mag well is designed could be setup to
      take glock, 1911 single+double stack, or whatever the flavor of the month.......
      With all the interest in PCCs I can see this in many calibers.....

      H&R went out of Business in the 80's. Numrich ended up buying a bunch of left over M50 Reising SMG's at the bankruptcy auction and sold them off in the early 90's. I bought one in 1990 for $550.

    I live two minutes away from where these guns were made, and I am right down the street from Kahr arms who still makes the Thompson under the Auto Ordnance name. H&R still makes gun barrels a few buildings down from the Worcester airport. Marlin use to have a factory a few blocks wide in downtown before it burned down. Parts of the Reising I'm pretty sure were mostly made up by the airport here along with anything marked H&R of Worcester Mass. the funny thing is that they really should have been marked H&R Cherry Vally or H&R of Leicester Mass.....good video.

    If someone made this today for a reasonable price, it would sell very well. The design allows for easy conversion to other magazines, so you can either produce magazines for it, or use existing ones. Pistol caliber carbines are very popular right now.

    I have heard of these a few times and have seen photos. Nice to see one in detail. Very practical for its intended purposes. I have Marlin Camp Carbines in both 9mm and 45. The 45 is especially accurate. It's a good gun for new shooters due to low recoil and ease of use. Set it up with a Pentax red dot for home defense use for my now ex-wife- she wasn't big on the shotgun. The Reising woukd have been great for guards and cops back in the day- i would have felt well-armed with 20 rounds of 45 on tap, and a spare mag. And it's about as quick as a lever action, with a better rate of fire. Pcc's are surprisingly useful. It's even legal here in Kalifornia with a 10 round mag (pin a 12 rounder)- no prob with a Marlin, just use 8 or 10 round 1911 mags. I would love a carbine in 38 Super or 357 Sig- the velocity gain would be significant. H&R made a lot of nice stuff in tbe past. My 50's era Garand is an H&R. Great video as always. Thank you

    I understand the desire to keep the charging handle "out of the way" so that some schlub of a security guard doesn't get it caught on something, but this design might have gone overboard on that.

    I would like to see someone bring this onto the market today by chopping two inches from the barrel, and lengthening the stock a little so that it is proportioned like the Model 50, then adding the compensator and cooling fins, and beefing up the magazines. About the disassembly procedure: I have seen an expression that suggests that "soldier proof" is better than "foolproof".
    That isn't because soldiers are stupid (they are no more or less stupid than anyone else), but because soldiers need to be able to operate their equipment - without breaking it - in the field, in the dark, after having been awake for two days without food, while somebody is shooting at them.
    Any equipment that fits those criteria is indeed soldier proof.

    Awesome, my dad has a Reising 60, ex-LAPD gun, serial 17xx, he bought it in 1969 or 70 for 125 dollars. Apparently after the Watts riots, the police commission forced the department to sell off its rifles and machine guns, and one LAPD officer bought the entire lot at auction. He was trying to sell them at his own gun shop as well as to other gun and pawn shops, and at all the LAPD towing companies (which is where my pop worked) Came with a sling and a pair of 20 rd mags. No, he won’t sell it lol

    My question is since theyre the same as the SMG 50/55 does that mean you can drop the full-auto parts into a 60, like you can an M2 full auto parts into an M1 carbine?

    On an earlier video, I asked Ian for help on the name of those sights referred to optical sights in the battlefield 1 game. You know, the one with 2 lenses as front and rear sights? Well I found the name!! It's called a Galilean sight. Some smle rifles had the same but were called letty sights...

    People criticize the cocking method because there is no bolt holdback but in fact, there is, a piece of stick dropped in there makes a fine holdback and sticks are everywhere. Can't find a stick? Use a cartridge.
    I do wonder how these sold post war when M1 carbines were everywhere.

    My friend has found one of these with the long, 18.25 inch barrel but it has retained the 28-count cooling ribs. I haven't been able to find any examples or images of a Model 60 nor Model 50 or 55 with a long barrel along with the 28 ribs. I hear the early M60s had this, but sources that say this often claim "it's been heard of" or something vague along those lines, so it doesn't seem very definitive as an answer. Does anyone know about this?

    • @billrivenbark8983
      @billrivenbark8983 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Some have ribs.

      I have one with ribs as well. I think most were smooth, though. You tend to find a bit of variation with these (example: most are parkerized; some are blued). Do you know which finish the one your friend found has?

    HELP!
    I'm sure someone watching these videos will know this. I think understand the difference between open and closed systems but what are the advantages of both types? I get that having a bolt going forward in an open system as the trigger is pulled can affect accuracy, and I guess in certain SMGs that's not really an issue but there must be other advantages to an open bolt, otherwise it wouldn't be a thing?

    Precise shooting for a guard, with a stock, sling, and fore-grip (Everything you need to tie into a stable firing position, with minimal training compared to pistols) means less stray shots bouncing around the valuables they're supposed to be guarding. Even if it's not a museum, or auction house, a lot of gurus talk about a 12 gauge as the ultimate in home defense, but I don't want to be bouncing 000 lead balls around the stuff I'm trying to protect, because it's My Stuff. I'd much rather put a couple of precise .45 caliber holes in the guy that's threatening them, than basically throw a dice-bag, and hope for a reasonable number of hits. But when protecting your stuff, it's up to you want's more important. With a .45caliber carbine, like that, it's shit simple to double-tap, accurately, and still minimize colateral damage. I reach for the 12 gague for shooting at clay, and birds on the wing. Much better suited for that purpose.

      .30 Carbine is a much higher pressure cartridge than .45 ACP, it really needs a locked breech, which usually incurs more cost to manufacture than a blowback or delayed blowback design.

    Why are there not more carbines in 45 acp, i think they're pretty handy especially in a concrete jungle. All you really have to choose from is the vector, hi-point, and that's pretty much it.(im sure there's some AR version out there somewhere)

    I assume the bullet speed on such long barrel with blowback is equivalent to that of a regular 1911 pistol! It will gain speed, but eventually will start to lose it due to the friction and blowback pressure loss! Can someone to confirm it?

    • @robertrol1020
      @robertrol1020 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Berserkr01 from what I understand the .45acp 230gr ball ammo is is best suited for 5inch 1911 barrels and barely sees an increase in velocity pat 6-7 inches
