Can we take a moment here to point out how so perfect Ring's drums were on this and indeed in every Beatle's song. He was the first guy to play the drums like a guitar, filling in the sound palette only with what was required, not trying to show off or dominate.

One of the things I loved about the Beatles was their wit and playfulness with each other. I remember an interview where John was asked if he thought Ringo was the best drummer in the world and answered "He's not even the best drummer in the Beatles".

@@cremetangerine82 I've done some checking up and it appears you are right. The story, which appeared in The Times, was apocryphal and has been debunked. It's been attributed to a radio comedy show in 1981. To be clear I always thought John meant it as a joke and didn't expect his remark to be taken seriously. But I made a mistake in public and I'm always happy to own up when I'm wrong. On a personal level I've always thought Ringo's drumming was perfect for The Beatles and added a lot to the mood of the songs, this one in particular.

@@raenellefisher8514 Not quite, you heard a distorted version of what actually happened.
After the final note finishes ringing out, there is a very high frequency being emitted for a second or 2, just before the gibberish starts. That high frequency is inaudible to humans, but dogs can hear it, the idea was to have the dog react to that sound and ppl not understanding why the dog would suddenly jump up or whatever. So it was just to add another dimension, an added magic trick by The Beatles to even affect your dog !
Lennon's idea, to mess with ppl's minds, as he so often liked to do.
and the Gibberish at the end, on the LP was looped, meaning the needle would never stop playing that gibberish over and over again (like a skipping record, but on purpose) so you had to get up and raise the needle off of the record, to stop the gibberish ! :D

This set of comments is the first that I ever heard of a high frequency tone thrown in there as well.

One day John showed up with this song, sat on a stool with a guitar (or piano; can't remember which) and sang & played it. When it was over, Emerick said they all sat there in stunned silence. That little odd bit on the end, was put on the inner liner of the turntable record. Back then, the needle would get to the inner liner and just play forever unless the needle was manually picked up. So the Beatles thought it would be cool to put something on it, to make people think the album still had material left. The long piano chord fade is achieved by raising the faders on the mixing board as the chord naturally decays. It is followed by a few seconds of silence that actually contains a dog whistle, Lastly that final repeating blast of reversed voices was designed to play in a vinyl records play out groove. Over and over again till the record was manually stopped by the listener. Most Beatles fans would agree that you've reached the pinnacle of the Beatles recording career with A Day In The Life. All the songs you react to from here on out will be judged against this song. Their are other mega-classics like, In My Life , Yesterday and Something. Everyone thinks it’s John singing the “ahs” after Paul’s “...went into a dream” line at the end of the bridge, but thanks to access to the isolated vocals becoming available due to Beatles Rock Band, it’s now rather obvious that it’s actually Paul singing it. When you listen to the vocal track you can hear his sharp intake of breath between the word “dream” and the first “ah”. It’s easy to understand why people think it’s John - the reverb and the nasal quality - but it’s actually Paul!

The brilliance of this song is that, although it is just about a regular day of reading the paper and going to work its very complex and rule-breaking music. That transition with all the noise was the hardest part according to Paul. They had the London Symphony (if memory serves) and they asked them to all simultaneously begin very quiet and just go louder and louder and louder, as loud as they could go. Now symphonic musicians need sheet music and notes and stuff so this did not compute for them. It was a brilliant move and broke every rule in the book. The result speaks for itself. Its a true masterpiece, starting so soft and dreamy with these HUGE symphonic crescendos. Glad to see you like this one a wee bit. Cheers from hot, sunny Ometepe Island, Harri.

I've seen a McCartney interview talking about this song and similar ones where often he and John would have written song-bits. Portions of a song, either a middle part (bit), or an end and beginning bits, then they got together and put the bits together like in A Day in the Life. I think Paul said it was "a bitty song" or something like that. And sometimes they would work together to help complete the others song without bringing separate bits together. That's why early on they credited any Beatle song they did as Lennon-McCartney, even if one totally composed a song alone for recording. That's my understanding of their collaboration. But Harri, I've always had the feeling that whoever sung the song was the originator of it, either John or Paul. I wonder if one, between the two, one came up with a song he insisted the other sing? On that weird part at the very end of Day in the Life, I read John saying they added that to "annoy your dog with" or something like that! LOL!

@Denny Ehlers Revolver started that change with Tomorrow Never Knows, and Sgt. Pepper pushed that change into the no-going-back zone!

The dark and churning, mysterious revolving of a tumble dryer just about right - you are also very eclectic and apposite with words by the way and look like a nice person.

I was born in 1948 and was the perfect age to appreciate the Beatles. I would run out and purchase their next album for a few dollars and play the heck out of it. My friends would come around and we'd listen together. The radio stations played their songs often. Between record albums, we would dissect what the Beatles had done and eagerly wait for the next masterpiece. I was never disappointed by that next album. They were incredibly consistent. I don't see how anyone could ever produce a body of work like the Beatles again. Such a lucky accident and so glad that they spoke English so we Americans and other English speakers could enjoy them to the fullest.

Hari, that’s Paul singing the “Woke Up, fell out of bed...” part. He had a separate piece he was working on and They fit it into John’s piece.

Ringo is a great drummer. Very under appreciated because he often keeps it simple, not flashy. Thing is though he is SO solid like a foundation that will never crumble. He deserves much more respect!

Ringo’s drumming on this song is like lyrics of their own!

It's hard to pick a favorite Beatles song, because then you hear another one! I was lucky enough to grow up with them, always being blown away by the next masterpiece. It's fun to watch you have the same experience. Great reaction 👍✌
