The delicious irony is that 'I Dreamed a Dream' is actually one of the most depressing songs in existence, sung by a woman forced into prostitution by an unfair and judgemental society in order to support her young child. She eventually catches TB and dies in squalor thanks to the hypocrisy of the middle and upper classes who infect and destroy her once hopeful life... Tra la la la la la!
Even though I can't help but feel incredibly depressed and eventually lose what little hope I've placed in the goodness of humanity watching this, for some reason, I can't stop watching Newswipe...
"A soviet premier from the 1970's crossed with a haunted tree" HA! That is my favorite description of anyone, ever. Thank you, Charlie Brooker, truly sensational.
18:13 I always lose it at that literally shitty kaiju fight (as the James Bond music climaxes no less), because I'm reminded that someone actually put work constructing that scene for the sole purpose of illustrating a throwaway analogy. Fucking love it.
Brooker’s on point with the Susan Boyle thing. The whole thing just feels like a lot of rich people with plastic surgery being shocked that the lower class can actually sing, and it stinks of patronisation. It’s at no fault to her, but it ended up with everyone collectively looking down on someone who isn’t rich or sexy and celebrating her so they can feel like a good person. She deserves praise, not patronisation.
I find those edited clips of politicians repeating the same words over and over in the same speech to be an important reminder that the mechanics of speech have more effect on our political opinions than we think or care to admit.
Would anyone happen to know what the piece of music starting roughly around 17:05 is called? I have been looking about for it ever since I heard it on a different show two years ago, but to no avail.
***** Ah, no, not that one. The Justice song starts around 16:05; I was asking for the one that starts a minute later - right after Valentine ends, in fact. When Brooker talks about Paul Staines, Guido Fawkes, and all that. But thank you nonetheless for giving me the name of the other song - I never really paid attention to it when seeing this episode the first time, but having heard the whole three minutes, I quite like it. ^_^ So thanks. If anyone has any idea what the other piece of music is called, though - the orchestral and really rather dramatic one that starts right after Valentine - I would appreciate it lots.
Ah, never mind - I did manage to find the piece, through a Spotify playlist of music used for his Screenwipe and Newswipe series. The information is no longer needed. ^_^ Incidentally, if anyone happens to be curious - it is Capsule in Space, composed by John Barry for the soundtrack to the James Bond film, You Only Live Twice. TH-cam also calls it Space March, apparently.
I know this comment is a year old but oh well. Yes, it was Nick Davies who first exposed the hacking scandal. The inquiry was launched mainly due to his massive knowledge of the subject and evidence he had compiled. Hell of a guy, although today he is still tragically unnoticed.
I find it interesting when you see bits like the stuff about dark arts of the press, knowing that a few years later the phone hacking scandal was all over the news
He writes for The Guardian, they were investigating the whole story for some years, (when the Murdoch's, their lackeys, Boris Johnson etc were all saying it's all a load of rubbish), so he probably had more of an idea about it than most.
Charlie's exaggerated smile-and-wave is disturbingly similar to when Cameron Watt (cammehyabams) did the same thing. It makes sense though, he seems like he would have been watch Charlie Brooker back then.
WTF is all that CGI going on, I don't remember this during the previous Canadian elections. It's there but not weird or over-the-top from what I remember.
To all those watching this in 2023....have you worked out yet how they just keep repackaging the same old problems...the latest craze is calling them all “crisis”😅
Check out the other "facts", seeing as you paused it to read them... (I don't know if Charlie was predicting the redefinition of "fact" to include the Fox Spews "alternative facts", or general mutilation of the definition spearheaded by "Clarkson Zacchunt" who says "true fact", because people like him have wealth, but no dictionaries.)

Tra la la la la la!
It's not depressing tho because it's about hope
At the basis of anything... who thought that “Lea Miserables” by Victor Hugo was good material for an upbeat musical?
Even though I can't help but feel incredibly depressed and eventually lose what little hope I've placed in the goodness of humanity watching this, for some reason, I can't stop watching Newswipe...
It's because it's honest and intellectual while at the same time being a great example of satire.
Yes it's really depressing. Every episode is quite depressing actually.
Yeah... thank god it's coupled with extreme Satie and a host I'd punch my nan in the face to meet.
I'd punch your nan in the face to meet him too.
But otherwise you're happy?
"A soviet premier from the 1970's crossed with a haunted tree" HA! That is my favorite description of anyone, ever. Thank you, Charlie Brooker, truly sensational.
Really glad this is still on YT. Like Brass Eye, even though it's not recent, it's still brutally relevant.
and Brooker did work on Brass Eye.
Channelling Peter O'Hanrahahanrahan at the very start there!!!
He didn't like it, but he had to go along with it
@@davidparsons452 Ich Nichten Lichten...
......and 2 years after this aired, along came the phone-hacking scandal!!
That photo of the duck and the silly noise really cheered me up. Thanks mate!
possibly one of the best series ever.
And here we are in mid june 2020, if only we could hit the rewind button and go back to a time when society was simply shit instead of insane.
Here we are in April 2021 and it's only got worse. Gotten worser, I mean. More badder. Not wickeder, not sick, I'm told.
2022😭😭😭
Ah yes, 2023 we've found out that the planet's in its boiling phase 🥲
Got to love Brooker’s musical cues. He’s got taste.

Spot on with Susan Boyle.
charlie's heartless reactions to heart-filled moments, they never tire.

26:27 "i can think of some i'd like to suffer more." perfect.
17:08 "He claims not to be a Tory, incidentally, but a broadly anti-politics libertarian." Ah yes, that old chestnut.
Basically a Tory.
11:04 "No Andy, let's talk more about what the f*** you were doing with that puppet." lol
Was that incidental music from Curb Your Enthusiasm when the puppet was on?
Charlie Brooker is fantastic.
That bit with the wall chart was hilarious. I might use it next time a picture of my grand daughter goes on the fridge door.
I'v bought a second-hand fridge, but can I become a foster-grandfather? Life is so bloody hard to keep up with.

As engaging and current-affairsy the SkyCopter is, it'll never match the gripping and majestic news coverage from the SkyBoat.
I like being told to go away, by Charlie. Is that weird?
There's a certain dom energy to Charlie, so nope not weird
0:28 Did Charlie Brooker predict the future?
I cant help but feel comforted, as I watch these, to know that America isnt the only one thats lost it's fucking mind when it comes to it's news.
I'm rewatching them in 2019 to try to get some perspective....seriously 5 years ago the world was amazing...lol shit.

+Endre Tveit Thanks for this legwork, I really wanted to know what this was and I found it eerily familiar, you've saved me a long search!
Was this before the phone hacking scandel exploded into news everywhere? Or after, 'cause if it's before that guy was tragically unnoticed.
Was wondering the same thing myself.
Long before
***** Really? Wow, wonder if this had any impact on the eventual investigations?
I know this comment is a year old but oh well. Yes, it was Nick Davies who first exposed the hacking scandal. The inquiry was launched mainly due to his massive knowledge of the subject and evidence he had compiled. Hell of a guy, although today he is still tragically unnoticed.
JackJames2612 Wow, good for him
'i've got another British word: shitehawk!' brilliant x)
at times feel terrified in a world that too big and complex for myself but at least charlie brookers there to guide me through it
Already feels like a key historical resource...
Had a good rewind to the Michael Howard graphic a few times n all
I find it interesting when you see bits like the stuff about dark arts of the press, knowing that a few years later the phone hacking scandal was all over the news
We need more Diane Morgan. Thank you Charlie Brooker for including her in your weekly wipe.
This aged well, Diane is really getting the recognition she deserves nowadays
The bloke at the end was right about phone hacking.
I shall call my autobiography "the salad vegetable"
"A soviet premier from the 70s crossed with a haunted tree". Sat at my desk fucking crying at that.
British politics is seriously corrupt.
"I don't believe i ... just leave me alone!"
The duck and funny sound really did the trick. I don't think I'll ever have a bad day from now on.
Awesome rework of the classic "A Handful of Songs" themetune.
Fucking yes.
By far the most shocking thing about this video is at 10:49 - regular unleaded petrol at under £1 a litre!
Now it's dipped back under I hope you're getting your monies worth!
A few years late but nice clip of The Thing soundtrack
Why the Blake's Seven music ? :)
Music at 11:08 anyone?
music at 20:30 please?

You're not alone. It's oddly... refreshing? I don't even know the right word.
The whole segment is mental but in fairness to Jo, plants that produce salad leaves are commonly referrred to as “salads” by gardeners and farmers

Is that the theme from Blakes Seven over the election coverage?

Yeesh, why is the Thing theme used so much on this show?
Do you think the got a desk that look awkward to sit at on purpose
