I know that others have remarked upon this before, but I truly love your "I dunno" sort of approach to things. "Let's give it a go," all that sort of stuff. I find it particularly suited to the topic at hand, but I also think that the world at large would benefit from a large percentage of humans adopting more of that approach, in general. When I was 18, I was smarter than everyone. Now that I'm 46, I finally know what Jesse Michaels of Operation Ivy was talking about when he said, "All I know is that I don't know nothing." It actually makes things a lot easier.
I'm loving the "journey" you're taking us on! I'm also enjoying the fact that you are "winging" it. Which I feel is the way it will be for me, when I finally make that leap of faith! The problem is, is that the kit I already have is all very "secure" and "safe!" I just love synthesis and if I had lots of money I'd go the safe way of buying a Moog modular, but that's never going to happen, so the euro rack system it will be! I will keep watching and learning and when I do jump, hopefully you and you lot out there, will be jumping with me!
12:00 O'tool is one of my favorite modules. It's kind of a set of instructions. I'm constantly finding myself creating mental pictures of what is happening, and then when I scope something on the tool, I am always surprised by how far off I was about something.
+1 for Rosie. I too was skeptical that I needed more than an attenuator, but the Rosie has so much functionality. I am always using the crossfade and send functions, and the headphone jack is SUPER useful for motivating a quick play when I have a few minutes. For mixers, I settled on a 2hp mixer and a couple of makenoise VCA's which do the same trick of being 3 channel mixers that can cascade into each other.
I recommend getting a RYO Ampmix as well. It's a 4 channel mixer but each channel can be a standalone attenuator/amplifier or if nothing is plugged into a channel input its output becomes a cv source. So at the same time you can have channel 1 acting as a cv source, channel 2 working as an attenuator and channel 3+4 being mixed together. I have 2 in my system and they are my most used mixers. You can get them as DIY or premade. They are super easy to build even easier than the Turing I think. If you come to Berlin you are welcome to play on my huge system and I can help get you more comfortable with DIY stuff because if you really want to get into eurorack for cheap you need to source your own parts and not just buy kits. Also I build cases here so let me know if you want to get a bigger custom case with power in the future.
The Transient Modules 2M is a nice pair of 3-channel mixers in 6hp. I use it all the time. It's not truly stereo (no panning, for example), but I use it constantly in my stereo setup, with some crafty patching. It's also pretty darn cheap.
thanks for these videos, really appreciate you putting yourself out there, lovely set you have there, Im totally in fear that I may drift towards getting my own set over the next few years, cheers
I hastily went for a pico output taking into account the stereo capabilities and low HP. Thinking the Rosie might have been a better option now considering all the additional functionalities.
You don't need to keep all your modules in the rack at all times. The o-tool can be an occasional visitor to give clarity now and then. If you change your rack around, new possibilities will surface without you having to plan them out beforehand.
That's exactly where I am -- too many modules, not enough rack HP. But it's easy enough to swap them in and out in a couple of sections of my rack(s) where variation is natural. I'm trying very hard not to add more rack space. I find I enjoy a "smaller" system in interesting ways.
@@MoltenMusicTech I'm sorry, I realize now my question wasn't really clear (language barrier ;-) ). I mean: I have the behringer ripp off 104 case. Now I would like a second one and place it on the moog 2 tier stand. So maybe you know if 2 tier Moog fits on the Behringer 104 ?
So do I! I am not being sarcastic...they really are lovely! It's been a long time since I wore such brash shirts. I wore them in my teens when everyone else was wearing plain or plaid. I should also say again that I have found your videos about creating a workable modular system really inspiring. I want to make that leap but am not sure if I'm ready yet...my finances are stretched enough as it is! Please keep us updated on your modular progress as this has been a fascinating journey and thanks for sharing it with us.
Hi again Robin. Will you be going to Synthfest in Sheffield later this month? If so please wear one of your lovely shirts so you'll be easily recognisable!!!
It's shameful that I've been playing piano and keyboards for almost fifty years (Yamaha SY-1 anyone?) and never really appreciated the basic blocks and interactions of the VCO, VCF, LFO, VCA etc. I suppose I like others just dove in without thought (reading manuals) and twiddled. Although intellectually I understood the basic electronic building blocks, this series has helped crystallise things for me. I can now actually get sound out of my ancient 'Synthedit' software. I also belatedly understand the excitement when the u741 op-amp came out. Quite revelatory really. I'm off to delve into the bowels of my moXF6. :-)
Of course you will add a third skiff and fill it shortly,... what you think not? LOL! Of course you will as it will free up a whole new realm of modular acquisitions and they are constantly coming out new, imagine the new modules within a year!
I ran out and decided to reuse the screws that came out of the M-32 so i could use them for the other modules - it's the module least likely to move :)
Ah, yes. I'd forgotten you have one! It has a quantized Turing Machine mode, too. And I think you have a mark IV? Has a sample player, too, and for that the card slot in the front is a boon. Put some drum samples in there, and you have another drum module. I was up late last night just playing with MI Tides and Warps. This stuff is so much fun.
Do you know that your Disting can give you the same functionality as the Turing Machine? Check out the Shift Register Random CVs (or quantized CVs) algorithm. That could make some room...
According to my Modular Grid layout it costs around €3886 - www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/422440 - but you should never look at the total cost or you'll never get started.
Thank you! I Whoah! That would get you a Peak AND a Matrixbrute! - But it wouldn't be truly YOURS and not like discovering your own countries, I understand. (watched all your episode. Thanks for the time you put in them. Keep it up!)
Hi, stumbled into your shed while looking at skiff ideas for my DFAM...which is sort of similar to the motehr in some ways, so if you were putting a DFAM in a skiff what other modues would you chuck in at the end..(about 44 HP to play with I think)..any thoughts?
Ahhh, ummm, Mylar Melodies is your man when it comes to DFAMs. I've never used one so i'm not sure what to suggest - but find Mylars channel and you'll find a wealth of ideas.
It does if the trim is too high. I'm just finding it all a bit fussy to get right and stay right so something built into the system that gives me a controllable output seems like a wise idea to me.
Yeah, it's like it would be possible to pass a flying bus cable to the next row but it would involve either an untidy pass through the front or a dodgy bit of case cutting behind the scenes. Also, i like the idea of being able to easily seperate them for transportation or running them individually.
Yes it can, but how do you pass those cables through... do you hack into the case, do you pull ribbons out the front and back in the front of the other row? Deciding to build this one row at a time has its disadvantages, but it's what I decided to do. Also i like the idea that I can use a row by itself it i wanted - take a row to a synth meet rather than the whole lot, etc. So...
Knew exactly, that would be your points for defence..Sure you can do all of those things, but will you?? Obviously the first case wasn't enough by your words not mine. I have a moog skiff as part of my setup and yes with the right drill, making a hole for power or ribbon feed is a real possibility. All your money and trip, so wish you well to figure it all out.
Ed Random - Too much money? No, definitely not. Modular requires a lot of trial and error and also costs money, and it's worth every freakin' penny IMO. There is no reason to knock people for buying cool gear. Even though I agree Robin will eventually put that Mother 32 back in its own case, there is no reason to be rude about it! At least he's sticking his neck out there to make these videos and that takes courage.
I know that others have remarked upon this before, but I truly love your "I dunno" sort of approach to things. "Let's give it a go," all that sort of stuff. LOL. I'm just worried I'll catch the bug. It's a subtle money pit!!

3-tier rack kit immediately!
Thanks, Vincent! The Row Power tip was very useful.
i go from the vca straght to rosie. keep in mind the mother 32 has a built in mixer as well.
Love it! Keep on that journey and we will follow.
Nice timing on the upload of these last two episodes.... now I'm late for work! (Yes, they're that good, I couldn't wait).

Absolutely beautiful. Even with the mother 32, its still a pleasing layout.

This is true - hence the Knurlies :)
Although taking them in and out is a faff - and it's always the faff that stops me from making music.
That's exactly where I am -- too many modules, not enough rack HP. But it's easy enough to swap them in and out in a couple of sections of my rack(s) where variation is natural. I'm trying very hard not to add more rack space. I find I enjoy a "smaller" system in interesting ways.

9:45 Hey man it is your choice.
Thank You.
Case question: are the behringer case-screws on the same distances?
They are sliding nuts so...... not sure what you mean.

@@MoltenMusicTech Ordered it. Will let you know ;-)
Any thought of hooking the 0-Coast up to the rest of the modular stuff now?
Yes, i do that
And another gorgeous shirt!
I enjoy my shirts

Just read that back and it sounds a bit creepy... sorry wasn't meant to be!
Lol - i'm bringing a security entourage
What do you do professionally? You have a great teaching vibe. I can listen to you all day (I am, lol)
Thanks! I write about music technology and I make videos :D
Love your channel!!
Thanks!

Joe Browns, mostly

What happened to the thumbscrews you used for the Mother 32?
I ran out and decided to reuse the screws that came out of the M-32 so i could use them for the other modules - it's the module least likely to move :)
Simple question: I'd love to know WHICH ACTUAL wall wart you finally decided to use and price/source you got it from please?
It's an old laptop power supply i had knocking around called a PowerCool Universal AC Adapter 65w
That's great, thank you.
Fun video, and nice progress. You're still going to need/want a quantizer, I think (?)
I think so too - doesn't the Disting have one?
Ah, yes. I'd forgotten you have one! It has a quantized Turing Machine mode, too. And I think you have a mark IV? Has a sample player, too, and for that the card slot in the front is a boon. Put some drum samples in there, and you have another drum module.

Third row ........ just got into modular via the Kilpatrick Phenol. Looking at a Tip Top Happy Ending as my ‘first’ row.
Do you know that your Disting can give you the same functionality as the Turing Machine? Check out the Shift Register Random CVs (or quantized CVs) algorithm. That could make some room...
Yes indeed, the Disting has many magical things hidden behind it's uninviting interface :)
Please give us an estimate to how much money roughly went into the two rows so far? Should i start that journey?
According to my Modular Grid layout it costs around €3886 - www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/422440 - but you should never look at the total cost or you'll never get started.

Doepfer monster case and don't worry about case real estate.
buy the third tier rack..fun!
I updated the my modular grid tracking of your case. Not sure what the second Pico is, Are they both DSPs? www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/481582
It's a Pico Drum :)
KMix shouldn't distort with Eurorack level. You may find that your signal into the pico DSP is too hot.
It does if the trim is too high. I'm just finding it all a bit fussy to get right and stay right so something built into the system that gives me a controllable output seems like a wise idea to me.
7:00 Do I know what it does? Of course not!
How have you got on with the Disting? You were'nt too impressed last video. Stick with it, it really is a Swiss Army knife!
So far I've used it for ES-1 emulation which isn't terribly exciting (video to come soon on AC Coupling) and that's it. More time will be given to it.
A single row power 40 should be sufficient to power your whole rack, no? you just need more connectors on your flying bus
oooh they’re separate racks, right.
Yeah, it's like it would be possible to pass a flying bus cable to the next row but it would involve either an untidy pass through the front or a dodgy bit of case cutting behind the scenes. Also, i like the idea of being able to easily seperate them for transportation or running them individually.
Thats fair, but think of that lovely 4hp mixer you could fit in there ;)
The most important question so far must be: how many patch cables do you have now? :D
Hosa sent me a big box of cables, just for fun, so i have many more than i need - which is nice :D
Yeeeh
1 row power 40 can power both those rows....
Yes it can, but how do you pass those cables through... do you hack into the case, do you pull ribbons out the front and back in the front of the other row? Deciding to build this one row at a time has its disadvantages, but it's what I decided to do. haha no. but the gods of retail are smiling..!
Dr. Molten, may I call you doctor? Are you the cousin of Dr. Jacobi from Twin Peaks?
No, he's my aunt
Get that mother 32 out of that skif.
Yes, just foolish putting out that independent PSU. This guy is way off, too much money and ego.

It's all about me Ed - worship me Ed, please worship me.
Molten Music Technology Too bad that you joke when i give you honest feedback.
why not just keep the moog seperate from the two tier thats my plan.
Funnily enough, having just built my Turing Machine, that's about to happen again.
