    Looking forward to the day I come by a 486 or earlier machine to get up and running. It'll take me back! My first PC was a Compaq XT and I wish I had have hung on to it. A great way to learn computing and computer science; very much hands-on from the get go. Another enjoyable video, thanks Richard :)

      I think this is only the 4th one I found in over four years at the flea market. This 486DX4-120 motherboard/CPU combo is available with the Soundblaster 16 ISA, graphics card and 8Mb RAM. I'll include the 600Mb HDD with it as well though I don't know if that is fully working as shown in the video. I also have AT power supplies available. electronicanaria@outlook.com

    a really good technique for straightening pins on a CPU is to use a carpenters knife AKA Stanley knife use the blade (removed from Stanley casing) use blade sharp side down and gently straighten the pins by pushing left or right on the pins :)

    I am sure you know this already, but socket athlons without a 12v 4 pin connector take most of their power off the 5v rail. You need a psu with at least 30a if not more. Thanks for all the cool videos. Also if you put a geforce 3 or 4 in there and try to boot with any psu good luck.

    I've recovered dead hard drives using GSmartControl. But it depends what the physical damage is how that's going to go. All GSmartControl can do is flag bad sectors on the disk. If the drive has bad heads or a bad spindle it can't do anything for that.

    Hello, AMD Athlon Thunderbird north of 1GHz draw a pretty hefty amount of power if your motherboard don't feature the 12V CPU power connector it will try to draw almost 70 watts from the 5V rail of the 20 Pin ATX connector so maybe both PSUs are in perfectly working condition but one of them has a stronger 5V rail.
    Thanks for the video.

    • @LearnElectronicsRepair

      The QDI board was previously tested and working on my 'known good' 20 pin ATX PSU so I think the power supply just gave up at some point. I will look at it on another video out of interest

      @@LearnElectronicsRepair Hello, do you mean the CPU and motherboard combination was tested (a similarly thirsty CPU I mean) on your know good PSU?
      I'm just telling just because you didn't talk about the heavy load on the 5V rail these CPUs take on PSUs just any normal modern one won't do and just an ild one capable of powering any P3 would struggle with 1GHz+ Thunderbirds.

  • @arthurmann578
    @arthurmann578 ปีที่แล้ว

    If I remember correctly those old AMD Athlons/Durons actually needed a power supply that delivered high amperage on the 5 volt rail instead of the 12 volt rail like the Intel's did. They would work very sporadically if there was not high amperage on the 5 volt rail. This can even be a problem with attempting to use one of today's newer PSUs on those old boards that use a greater amperage 12 volt rail/rails but tend to deliver lower 5 volt amperage. AMD just had to be different from the norm back then in their CPUs. They were great CPUs non the less! 👍👍
    PS: There is a way to low level format those old hard drives when they occasionally go "out of wack." Something about :800 command.....if I could just remember as it was SO LONG ago.......🤔

  • @gordthor5351
    @gordthor5351 ปีที่แล้ว

    When so many caps are bulged on the motherboard, the caps in the PSU are likely even worse and putting out very dirty power. The fact that the more powerful processer caused a different code, might be due to the extra load on a PSU which might already be struggling to put a remotely acceptable voltage to each rail.

  • @roadsiderebels3039

    At 51:32 it shows the POST screen. At the very bottom, the last section tells you the motherboard name 486PCIMB-U. If nothing else, maybe VOGONS can give you a motherboard manual?

    Never played with floppies, but I would use Linux for formatting or at least wiping any storage device. It will be a simple block device under Linux (e.g. /dev/fdX) and then you can use low level utilities like DD to write zeros to the drive (e.g. dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/fda) or something like that. The only problem could be a write error, which I don't know if floppies can have.

    About the AT machine near the end. Don't understand what's the problem with testing it. Couldn't you just put a FreeDOS or something on a CD and have a CD drive connected to the board and boot from that? Do these machines support booting from CD drives? Do you have a different IDE hard drive? Would you have to set up the formatting for a drive in the BIOS?

    • @RetroTinkerer
      @RetroTinkerer ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, yes working with virtual machines is one option. I have used that mode to prepare HDDs (Fdisk/Format) for boot and copy Windows 98 files on a modern machine and then start the installation on the legacy machine.
      I have even imaged old hard disks to a virtual drive with norton ghost and then dumped that image to a bigger and newer HDD, most of the times it have been fast and trouble free but there are exceptions.
      Some of the motherboards he had show in previous repair videos have the possibility of booting to MS-DOS from an USB pendrive.
      He can also use create a boot floppy on a somewhat old machine that still include both floppy and IDE but can boot from a CD-ROM.
      There are several options, finding the right one that can work out with the hardware you have at hand can be pretty time consuming.

    ok, I have a question.... What would happen if there is a short on the 12v rail and you try turning it on anyway (or just turn it on without checking for shorts)? The short was obviously already there, so chances are that any damage caused by the short has already happend before you got it, or am I wrong? I get that you shouldn't turn anything on that has a short, but perhaps you can explain what the consequences would be.

    • @LearnElectronicsRepair
