    I make arrangements for friends and family as a hobby so I come to youtube to learn tips and techniques.
    You are definitely, my favorite floral designer to learn from, J. Thanks ! I love working with floral foam and appreciate your recommendations very much.
    I live about 20 minutes from Eufloria and the other nurseries in Nipomo, CA so I'm lucky that I can get super fresh flowers.

    Very good video. I started a 1-month online "Basics of Floral Design" course some weeks ago, and it's actually been a bit of a flop, because of the teacher. He is a professional florist, he does know a lot about designs and all, and he means well, but he is just not good at teaching, almost at all. These kind of videos help me a lot, though I feel like this is a bit more advanced than what I know so far. But thanks very much

    Wonderful video. Can you usec the glue method with several pieces of floral foam in the same arrangement?

    • @LifeinBloom
      @LifeinBloom  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really sure what you are asking Natoya- so... two things... you can glue more than one block of foam into a container - as long as they are both adhered to the container... but if you glue one block to another block of foam it will not allow the flowers nor the stems to move between the two blocks... so I hope this helpful information my friend!

    I like the hot glue over taping around the foam because it makes it much easier to insert the flowers without worrying about the tape, but when I make arrangements for my home or my family, I can remove the taped foam, and clean and reuse the plastic base. It feels ludicrous to throw away the base after one use. Can you "unglue" the foam once the life of the arrangement ends, or does this assembly becomes one-use only? Thank you for your wonderful videos, you are awesome 😊

    • @LifeinBloom
      @LifeinBloom  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      THIS Is such an Awesome Question- thanks- I'm going to include it an upcoming Flower Thought!
      Here's a simple little trick- you're right- about the tape coming off... but the glue being stuck forever...
      So... Simply line the clean dry container with a few strips of Duct Tape- The waterproof kind) and then glue the foam with the hot glue to the duct tape... after the bouquet has expired- you can simply remove the duct tape- and the container is reusable again... It's Simple- and also works great for fragile- expensive- or antique containers that you don't want to use anchor tape-... and it prevents damage to the container...
      Thanks again for this great question... I appreciate it so much!

    Dear Mr. Schwanke, thank you very much for expanding my (modest) knowledge of flower arranging. You helped me very much in many aspects. About this video: my knowledge of English seems not to be enough to understand the sequence about gluing the foam with a hot glue into container. Please, could you be so kind and write what sort of glue is used to glue the foam, or some other advise about how to glue pieces of foam together? Than you very much, I wish you have many satisfied costumers and followers :)

    Hi J,
    Thanks for your reply.
    I take your point.
    My concern is to whether I should use it on a project I'm about to begin.
    I was planning to use the foam to construct of a terrarium 'mountain-scape'. e.g using the foam to create layers of height and shape, then covering the foam with a layer of soil adding ferns and mosses etc. and then having the lower part of the terrarium under water.
    After I saw the warning about flower foam leaching nasty stuff when submerged in water for a long time, in my case semi-permanently (years), so I've started to doubt whether to proceed with foam or not.
    The terrarium will be kept in-doors at room temperature.
    I would imagine that you don't keep your foam submerged in water for longer than a few weeks at most? This could possibly be the reason it's not affected you.
    best regards.

    • @LifeinBloom
      @LifeinBloom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The combination of Soil, Water, Flower Foam and Plants- might not provide the clearest water solution for your terrarium... However flower foam is a credible and popular growing medium- for starting cuttings- and you won't be using large amounts- for example- Poinsettia cuttings are started in foam mediums- and I transplanted 1000's of Poinsettias over the years- and we grew the Poinsettias to Perfection- in our greenhouses- where the flower foam remained in the soil in the pot... Since you are not growing FOOD PRODUCTS - or drinking the water - or soaking your hands in the water inside the terrarium- there should be little issue- with using the foam in this manner... Perhaps Rocks - of different shapes and sizes would provide a similar type of 'structure' inside your terrarium...
      The other obvious attribute of Flower Foam- is that it soaks up water- and thus would provide/contribute to excess humidity inside the terrarium- this could or could not be helpful to the overall growing of the ferns and moss...
      I have successfully grown moss on saturated flower foam- and have not had issue with that process...
      I hope this information is helpful my friend...

  • @LyndaE79

    How often should the foam be replaced? Also, does it need to be "watered" after you've placed the flower into it?

    • @LifeinBloom
      @LifeinBloom  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The foam should be replaced after each use- because it will develop bacteria inside... and the foam should be soaked in flower nutrient water before arranging- then as the water is depleted- be sure to top off the container with Flower Nutrient water! Thanks for the questions Lynda!

    What holder do I use at the top of a pisner vase or trumpet vase? I'm worried the flowers could fall off. The flowers will be full resting on a 32"tall pilsner vase. The top is 4.5". Need your help

      I would use the LARGE Gala Bouquet holder.. that way it's very stable and the handle would fit down in side the vase, con kal. You can find them at local floral supply houses... or buy them direct at www.uBloom.com/BuyGala!

    • @LifeinBloom
      @LifeinBloom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use any Skillet- I have found many at garage sales or thrift stores... it's a great way to find a BIGGER Size skillet- You set the temp- so that you can ensure LOWER TEMPS- the glue should be about the consistency of taffy- not CLEAR and SMOKING... I try to set the temp at about 175... it takes a bit longer to melt- but it seems safer that heating it up on high and the trying to cool it down...
      I hope this additional information is helpful...

    Interesting, how long do you get real flowers to last using these floral blocks. I would imagine the water soaked in them allows the flowers to last longer with out watering them.

    Can we reuse these foam blocks ??? Or can use only once ???

    • @LifeinBloom
      @LifeinBloom  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      NO- and Thank you for the question Shazi- Foam Bricks should be used only once... the basic reason- is because bacteria builds up inside the foam... from the degrading botanical stems- this is absorbed into the foam- and if you were to reuse the foam- the bacteria would be very bad for the flowers...
      Bacteria is the number one enemy for making flowers last... so bacteria means shorter vase life...
      Another good reason to not reuse the foam- (as if bacteria production wasn't enough)... Is that when you place stems into the foam- after it has been used- you run the risk of running into the previous holes- created by the stems and if the stems are not FLUSH with the foam they cannot take up the water... this is why we use the foam... so if it cannot transport water to the flowers- it's not doing it's job...
      Finally- if allowed to dry out- the foam will not be able to soak up water or transport it to the flower as it is designed... (here's a helpful tip- Cut only the amount of foam that fits into your container- THEN Soak it... this way you can store the dry foam until you need it again...
      Thank so much for the AWESOME Question... I appreciate it so much- Have a Flower Filled Day!

    I learned a lot. Do you always use glue and waterproof tape prior to soaking? If you wanted to use a big round glass vase, what are the steps you would take...in order? Don't think you would glue the wet foam into glass vase. You would want to reuse.

    • @LifeinBloom
      @LifeinBloom  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great Question- here's one of my favorite Tricks Karen...
      But First- YOU ALWAYS Glue the Foam into the vase DRY- then soak vase and all... it's nearly impossible to glue in wet foam and get it to stay...
      Next... line the glass bowl with DUCT TAPE... and the GLUE the DRY Foam to the Duct Tape... since it's waterproof- you can then soak- and after use- remove the tape and you won't have damaged the container... PRESTO!!!
      Enjoy - and thanks for the question... I appreciate it so much!

    • @karendistefano6001
      @karendistefano6001 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for answering my question. I realize you glue foam to vase or ductape, then do slow soak of all, but what if it's a big round one...you will need a big bucket to fit the big bowl or vase with foam in it. I am literally talking about a heavy big round glass or ceramic vase...so it may pull down in water fast so the foam will go down in seconds. Not all vases or pots are small, so that why I want to know if you would handle the same way. That's my ? It's easy to do plastic or small stuff as you showed on video. I love your channel! Thx!

    • @LifeinBloom
      @LifeinBloom  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@karendistefano6001 Certainly- good elaboration... Many times if the container is too large to soak... I still afix the dry foam- and gradually add flower nutrient water to the container- on one side only... adding it very slowly so that it soaks into the bottom first.... and then allowing a bit of time- and adding more- in several applications- this allows the water to naturally soak into the base of the foam first- and still allows for the air to escape... this gradual process is quite successful- it's about taking the time to SLOWLY add the water... and insure that the foam soaks from the bottom up... Thanks for the opportunity to clarity and also for the KIND Comment about my channel.... I appreciate it very much!

    • @LifeinBloom

      Flower foam can release some water when hung- this usually stops after 10 -12 minutes... so it's an issue you can take care of up front...
      Also... you can wrap the foam in a plastic bag and seal... then you would pierce the stems through the bag... and the bag helps keep the moisture in place... I do hope this information is helpful!
