Here's some more tips to Mike's excellent advice:
Make eye contact. You have to appear confident and if you stare at the floor the entire time it's very off-putting.
No jokes. Unless you are really good at delivery, they usually fall flat. You have to remember that the hiring board will be made up of regular citizens as well as lots of brass. That's a hard crowd to throw a joke out to and make any of them laugh.
Remember we are bored to tears by the time you get to sit in front of us ( try listening to tons of boring answers to the same questions) and tell us why you would be great at our department. The pain of canned answers mentioned in the video is very real. You have to flesh out every answer to make it interesting. Never respond with a one word answer and always give context.
On the flip side, know when to shut the hell up. It's been my experience that the most flashy interviewees with the best conversationalist skills don't do well once training starts. Sort of like a pretty girl relying on her looks to excuse some of her hang-ups, people with wonderful conversational skills tend to use that strength to hide from some of their deficits. You won't be talking a whole lot in the fire academy.
When a candidate walked into the room to interview, we (the hiring board) immediately sized up the appearance and the fitness of the candidate. Before they said a word. We noticed if you hadn't shaved, were fat, had dirty or inappropriate clothes, etc. I personally never cared if they wore a suit but a nice pair of pants with a buttoned up shirt and tie was a minimum standard in my book.
When you take a seat, sit up straight and make eye contact with everyone, even the scary looking Chiefs that are blinding you with all of their gold on their uniform. You have got to appear confident and if you aren't, then like Mike says practice until you can pull it off. Film yourself doing mock interviews and you will immediately notice some of the flaws in your delivery. It's very humbling the first time you do this so be prepared to die from embarrassment. But just remember that better this happens in practice versus the real deal.
One last thing, you have got to be prepared to answer questions on the fly about your past, especially regarding failure to completes. This is usually related to military service and schooling or job history. We want to know why you left the military early, or college, or why you tend to work a job for a few months and then leave. The fire service wants people that aren't quitters as it is a huge investment on their end to take somebody on and train them to standard. And if you don't have good reasons, then you should have enough history under your belt to show that you've matured.

@@mike_pertz I think you are doing a great service to the young kids, or anybody really who wants to be a firefighter. All of your advice has been spot on and even though I am retired, I still find your videos interesting. Probably because I have taught a lot of young guys that have gone on to have full time careers. I always tried to be the mentor I wished I had access to when I first began my career. I think you are that person for thousands of others through your channel. Well done and hopefully you keep at it.

I had my interview yesterday, and just a conditional offer today. I believe I did very well, or at least/obviously well enough to move on, however, the chief, who was 1 of three people on my interview board gave me some advice; Talk less, listen more - this is because on 1-2 questions, I answered the question asked, but added “unnecessary information”. My personal example being them asking, “So you grew and lived most of your life in XYZ?” My response was, “yes sir, I was also stationed in ABC, so I also lived there for a couple of years as well.” Long story short, listen to the questions being asked, and only answer what is being asked.

They won’t necessarily try to convert you as good works for zero benefit is supposed to be the deal. Hey Mike, I’m Seage ( Sage ) and I’m from hawaii trying to get into the county of hawaii fire department. I have a question for the interview part.
I have a small stutter. It use to be bad but I’ve gotten better over the years from a young age. How do I address that in the interview. Do I let it be know to the interviewing panel as soon as the interview has begun, or do I try my best not to stutter? It usually come out when I talk really fast or get excited while talking. When I talk slower it doesn’t show as much. Please let me know on what I should do about this problem.
    Thank you.

Hey, I really need your advice. I want to know if some things that are going on at my department are acceptable.
First, I passed the Fire Marshal's test, the marshals contacted my officer and I was immediately confronted in a nasty and vindictive way. He said, if you don't like it here leave now, then my officers retaliated by making my life a living hell.
They wrote official complaints against me for; having 1 plate not all the way scrubbed.
Going to sleep at 11pm and not participating in the late night rope training they decided to do, permissible lights out is 10pm.
Lying and saying I overspent on the grocery run.
Denying my chances to go with the squad to get a mandatory 10 squad runs, then lying to the chief and said I never asked to go.
Etcetera, you get the idea. I feel like this is super toxic behavior, just want to know if I'm out of line or they are.
    Would seriously appreciate your take,
    Thank you.

Hi Hans, sounds like a tough situation. Because I don't know where you are, your department or much about your situation, it's tough for me to say what is and isn't acceptable as I don't know the whole story. However, based on what you mentioned in the comment, that doesn't sound normal or acceptable, and if that's what is really going on maybe you should consider moving to a different department. Hope that helps.

I did 8 years in the army. Being a veteran gives you 5-10 extra points in most places. There's going to be alot of of people that have military service background in your hiring process l. However I wouldn't join the military
For that reason. You can easily just got get fire 1 and fire 2 and emt and probably get hired over majority of this people with veterans preference. It looks good but it isn't a make or break

    8. do your homework and know about the city/town and department. Demographics, response area etc. If you are not a local person know about the local area (features etc.) i.e.. why do you want to work for my dept. as opposed for any other dept. or are you just looking for the first job that comes along. 9. Also, for male grooming, get a hair cut and no facial hair. Shave off the "salty jake" 'stache. Don't tell me it's not right for people to judge you by how you look, it is not right, but it is also reality. When I see a new kid come in with a salty handlebar 'stache I do assume that they are going to act salty before day one. 10. If you have sleeve tattoos where a long sleeve shirt and cover them (not right, but again you are being judged) . 11. wear well fitting clothes and lose weight! If you look out of shape then it will be assumed you are out of shape. I don't care if you can run a marathon and bench press 500#, if you look like an out of shape blimp you won't get the job, a lot of time this can be cured with a well fitting suit.
