  • Smart plugs are REALLY useful devices, but there seems to be too much choice out there right now. For example a quick Amazon search showed me smart plugs from Philips Hue, Amazon, EIGHTREE, Leviton, TP-Link Kasa, Tapo and more.
Which should you choose? Well I discuss the most important buying factors in this video. I also mention a few helpful articles on the Smart Home Point blog, and you can find these articles at:

I've had a bunch of different types of smart plug over the years but i'm currently buying Tapo. They have always paired to the network and app faultlessly plus the Tapo app is pretty good. The energy monitoring feature on some models works well too. Overall Tapo is proving to be quite a nice ecosystem, i'm using a couple of sensors from them as well. My main issue with other smart plugs has been longevity; i've had quite a few simply stop working after a few years.

I submit to you that your video does not stress local control or privacy enough.
Any smart home devices or plug choices should always be made with a goal of not being cloud dependent. Generally speaking Alexa and Google’s entire business model relies on data mining your personal information and personal data via their cloud servers. We have become so desensitized to this fact that privacy seems to play only a bit role in many smart home product reviews like yours. This should not be the case.

Is is possible to replace the wall receptacle with a smart one so the bulk is reduced ?
