Many thanks for replying, what a considerable difference, the expo model was very close to being binned, and I have been looking at alternatives. You Tuber LNER1946, has had the same problem, and has sourced another motor.
Richard Swallow , I used a cheap eBay voltage reduce board that allows you to vary the output voltage, rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F232179761417 similar to this one, it's turned right down to around 3 volts believe it or not, and you are correct, that motor and gearbox is horrible for noise at full voltage!
Just to add. What a great idea to use door closers to pivot the board.
Great job!
Love the layout is it of your own design ? Also what size is the basement board. Cheers

D THOMPSON, I got it from the railway scenics website, it's called hobby chain and sprocket set. Hope this helps
thanks and how did cure noise problem mine louder than the trains with sound on
D THOMPSON , the chain and sprockets did nothing to help the noise but the little voltage reducing board I used cured it.
