    Got a KP to replace my K-3 (I). Despite the tradeoffs (single card slot, no IR remote function, smaller battery), I still find it a big upgrade. It's made both street/travel photography easier with the ES, tilting screen, smaller size and WIFI. I even started taking it with me on portrait shoots and the IQ improvement is definitely noticeable IMHO.

    I've enjoyed your KP comparisons. They contributed a lot to me selling all of my full frame gear (K1 based) and ordering a new KP. I've had the K-70 and while it's a fine camera, I cannot do without AEL (which I don't think the D500 has either). At least the KP has the FX2 button that can be assigned to it. If Pentax would have put IR sensors on the KP, for wireless remote, I would have bought one long ago. Should be here today! Eager to take it out and see what it can do, compared to my beloved and well worn K3.

    The problem with the KP when released was the price. It was around £1300 in the UK. The K3ii and K70 were around £800 and £600 respectively. Of course the reviews did not help either. That Camera store one, although the criticisms were fair, dwelt far too much on its 2 negative aspects, price and handling (more of that in a minute), and little time on its positives.
    Now the handling of the KP can be classed(IMO), as either great, OK or poor and if you are used to the K5/3 range - odd. Firstly it is odd because the control buttons are necessarily cramped due to the cameras size. If you are coming from the larger K5 and K3 models this takes some getting used to. The shutter release is on the top plate (like an old film camera) not on the grip, which means you are forced to hold it slightly differently than the Pentax models we were used to. With a small prime attached the KPs handling is OK, no better or worse than preceding Pentax models, just different. Add something larger though and it turns into a bit of a pig. Things are transformed however, with the addition of a battery grip and I find the handling to uncompromisingly excellent - almost on par with the K5/3 range.
    Nowadays though the price of the camera has come down a fair bit and this is no longer an issue. In the DSLR realm I do not think it has a rival (the D500 is in a different class due to its professional build, buffer and specs, reflected in its price). This means it gets compared to things like the X-T30, which on the face of it is OK as it falls into a similar price bracket, but really they are 2 different types of camera. Compared to such mirrorless designs you get a larger,heavier weather sealed body with an optical viewfinder (much better if using flash and nicer in use as it is always "on"), the option of a vertical grip and access to a vast array of legacy glass without the need of adaptors. In contrast the mirrorless design gives you a smaller lighter body, WSYWIG viewfinder, better continuous AF, access to an even greater array of legacy glass (but only with adaptors) together with some cheap but good Chinese manual lenses and often better video capabilities. Ideally you want both types of camera, but if this is not possible, you have to chose based on your priorities - I would pick the KP.

    @vincentlavergne2946 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Pentax KP is my first DSLR so I won’t comment about direct comparison with other brands camera. My first experience in photography has been with compact film cameras and then compact digital camera.
    When I first started to consider photography has a more serious hobby, I didn’t considered Pentax as my first choice during my research. I was all about the Sigma system due to the Foveon sensor technology. As I was watching revues about the Sigmas, I realized that it wasn’t a system for me. Bad Iso performance, no sensor stabilization, only 1 DSLR in the line and some mirror-less (with huge doubts regarding the EVF)… in the end, it would have been a very bad choice for me.
    My focus shifted to Pentax due to in body stabilization and its usage for pixelshift. So I learned about the K-mount (and the backward compatibility of the lenses, the limited line…) and all the others functions em-blended into Pentax cameras. Soon I realized that Pentax was the best bang for the bucks for what I want to do (photography but no videos).
    I chose the KP because my finance permitted it (and it’s an important parameter for the choice of a camera), and to me, I was making a long term investment (and I don’t plan to replace my KP any time soon).
    My experience with this particular camera is that it not only deliver in term of results, but it’s also a real pleasure to use. The ergonomic is way better than some reviews implies (I started with the big grip but I quickly realized that the medium one was better for me). Most things that were considered as lacking (no EVF, no touch screen) are things that I don’t find interesting (looking at the picture you have just taken on a screen full of your finger print is not a good experience and the ability to compose without turning your camera on is a true advantage regarding battery life). Pentax menus are easy to use (most options can be accessed through the info button) and the third wheel system + programmable buttons allows you to switch from one usage to another on the fly. One thing that most reviewer miss is the fact that a function hidden too deep in the menus is a function that you wont use anyway. In that regard, the Pentax KP offers even more compared to its competition…
    I wont qualify the KP as the perfect camera either, but it’s the closer that I found for my usage. Sadly, my usage should be qualified as advanced amateur at best, but it shouldn’t be qualified as professional. And I don’t think that the KP qualifies as such either.
    Professional photography has evolved a lot during the last decades. Good quality picture is something easier to achieve now with costumer grade gears (even phone), and most medias have downgraded their exigences to social media level. In this context, it’s harder and harder to earn a salary purely from photography. Wedding photographers are going to need good video options in order to offer a service not achievable by someone from the audience, and it’s the same regarding independent reporters/ photojournalists.
    Even for me there are some easy up-grades that can be implemented on the KP through software update. I would like an on/off display option to be programmable for the top left button. I would appreciate to have different option on C1 C2 and C3 for the same program line when I switch from OVF to live-view. And would like to attribute others options on the C1 C2 C3 slots for in body raw development (mainly the possibility to change numerical filter color for black and white photography, high light compression, shadow light…). With such options the KP would be an even better option for amateur photographer and would still be a valuable option for new costumers for years to come.

      @@theCameraVille Yes!!! I truly like this camera. And I hope this kind of comments helps your channel and helps people who are curious about photography.
      The thing is that : lately, I came across a lot of reviews about camera gear and I find them increasingly missleading. With the current war between Sony, Canon and Nikon (mainly, with Fuji in ambush maybe) on the mirror-less market, I have the impression that most channel tries to get you into a new system every few month meanwhile I don't feel like there is much improvement for a user like me. They are pushing way too far on some feature such as eye detection auto-focus with lens at f1.4 (and some time bigger aperture) lenses and show pictures that are way too blurry to be "good" (because the depth of field is so small that there is basically nothing sharp in the picture). At the same time, things like ergonomic, user experience, intention of the designer and intended market... are basically overlooked as if every camera was an attempt to be the best in every category at the same time.
      It's even worst now that they focus a lot on video (with the 4K and now 8K), without trying to explain the technical aspect first. It's like no one knows how much megapixels are needed for 4K. Wouldn't a sensor with just the right amount of pixel be flat-out better ? Basically, shooting a video is close to shooting about 25 pictures a second so your shutter speed need to be about 1/50th of a second most of the time. In that case, the bigger are your photosites the less noise you have (so you can raise the Iso), the more depth of field you can get for a given scene with a given light. So a low megapixel camera should give more versatility for the user to stop-down his aperture (and increase his depth of field or get better sharpness) or increase his speed to get less movement blur which means that video oriented camera should be very different than the 36 or higher Megapixel that Canon Sony and Nikon are pushing as their flagships ?
      That's why I think Pentax marketing department didn't do a great job for the KP. It's just a very good camera for advanced amateur photographer that deserve to be more in the spotlight for what it does great... And you kinda did it more that Pentax themselves.

So far I have no real complaints about it. Overall I still say that between the two the k-70 more user friendly. That is something that seems to come out in most of the reviews for it. I do have a question for you however. How much difference in image quality do you feel is their between the kp and the k-70. I usually either have a pentax 18-135 or a sigma comtemporary series 18-300 on mine. I have good image out of both. I also use a pentax 50 1.8 and still no problems. Pentax is sadly underrepresented. I'm a Nikon shooter mainly but I adore Pentax's out of the box thinking in design language and functionality. I've actually got a KP in my considering for a new camera. I use Sonys at work and I hate them. Fuji is the only mirrorless I currently mess with.

    As I stated previously, I am holding my breath as to whether this new APSC Camera will have the now almost mandatory "Flippy Screen" ; as most of Pentax competitors have these as standard fare now, and even Pentax had them on older APSC Cameras. I hope that they have it, if not then I can unfortunately forecast the death knell for Pentax the same way that poor Olympus has gone. The dredges of accountants & professional managers has taken a toll on the decision makers of these once proud historical photo giants of the camera industry. It will drive away newcomers & seasoned photo enthusiasts like myself who number in the untold numbers to shy away from this one great iconic photo giant of a manufacturer to the dreaded competition. If not then Pentax did a disservice to the Legions of Pentaxians, and other Newbies who were considering it as a reasonable option to the Canon's-Nikon's-Sony's-Fuji's of the world to say the least. I was really looking forward to buying & diving into the Pentax System with a purchase of this camera with its assorted branded lenses, flash's & accessories. As a Film shooter of many decades I had given up my film hardware and wanted to finally dive into the world of DSLR's. Now I can only hope that this new puppy has a flippy screen, if not then I will shed a tear for the great Pentax line.

      Yea, tons of people arent happy. I cant believe 70% are shocked there is no flip screen in 2020 on a flagship camera. I have been getting messages like every hour on it. Its a strange day but yea, that flip screen means a lot to many folks. The specs must out weigh this. I hope so. It gotta right?

      @@tubularificationed you say that's a trend, what came out after the KP that made this a trend with the strip down features?

    • @odemata87
      @odemata87 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Though I would have preferred a flippy screen myself I'm not going to be so pessimistic about dismissing the brand entirely because that. I do feel their management has a disconnect with their customers nonetheless yet however they do find themselves in a very interesting position in a ever contracting dedicated camera market. Despite what you may see on TH-cam or read in the blogs, many of those companies you listed aren't even selling as much you may think despite all the bells and whistles they are cramming into their cameras. Fuji case in point biggest sellers I believe are their Instamax cameras. If Pentax can carve out niche with their DSLRs who's to say they may infact have some staying power amongst all of this? I think the new OVF is something else (BS) but who's to say it may offer some true benefits for those who can utilize such. Maybe this is their way of structuring just has Nikon done when they omitted a second card slot in some of their cameras and top LED screen, creating a new distinction between Pro bodies and Enthusiasts/Prosumer etc

    • @odemata87

      @@tubularificationed okay this is interesting. My first foray with Pentax is with their KP then followed by the K1 so I'm not that well versed with their product history. I still think from use, the KP despite some of its limitations when compared to its contemporaries, robust and functional. Actually my main complaint is the flippy screen do its resolution. Definitely will keep an eye on this trend you speak and can only hope what they take away from this latest camera they can make up for it with something worth even talking about more buying.

      That is soon to be discountinued. RIP EOS M. But they use a 1.6 crop sensor which is why they fail in image quality. So back to the statement. A true compact camera with bad image quality is EOS M . As mentioned in my video I tested 7dmkii as well. Smaller the sensor , the worse iso and dynamic range you are getting.

    • @AndrewSowerby
      @AndrewSowerby 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@theCameraVille the slightly smaller sensor is a factor, sure, but several MFT cameras beat most of the APS-C sensors Canon made until about 2016 (when the 80D was released) for dynamic range (even their FF 5D and 1D range had poor dynamic range), and even on ISO in some cases (Oly E-M1 MkII vs. Canon 80D, very close on DR, and the Oly appears to be slightly better on noise performance!). Pentax APS-C was easily beating Canon FF on DR. Even the ancient K5 (2011!) is still nearly able to match the Canon 1DX MkIII for dynamic range. That's crazy - the Canon was released THIS YEAR!
      Canon sensors used to be garbage. They're pretty good now, almost as good as the worst of the competition. ALMOST (sorry Canon sensor division, you still kinda suck).
      Of course, that never stopped skilled photographers from getting incredible images out of them, and they have so many amazing lenses available, nice colour science, ergonomics, build quality, support etc., so I'm not knocking them overall, but those 2016 and older sensors were a long way behind the competition!
