In the time they've spent looking at it in disgust claiming it's _the_ worst thing ever, either of them would've started going to town getting that crap outta there and seeing if there's any life left in the engine. There isn't that much rust - replacing the flares takes care of a lot of it. . You basically need to do about 20 years of normal maintenance before it goes down the road. Replace brakes, tires, drop the fuel tank and lines. 90% of the work needed does not require a $100 an hour mechanic, just someone with a little basic automotive knowledge and a willingness to get their hands dirty. Once the packrat nests are cleaned out and some of the basic repairs done then you bring it in for the headgaskets (or do it your self) or what ever it was that caused the Jeep to be parked in the first place. I'd be all over the Jeep for $350.
My neighbor had an old Dodge 2 ton grain truck that the pack rats filled the engine bay like that every year - every fall he scooped it out with his hands then a garden hose to get the rest of the flammable out of the engine bay. If the truck was lucky he'd change the oil but usually he just drove it. He only went to the garden hose after he caught it on fire a couple times.

Right to repair has nothing to do with the business they're doing right now but going forward guaranteeing right to repair and ensuring by writ of law that people own the things they own would mean that the business they're doing now would still exist 30 to 60 years into the future. If write to repair isn't passed it'll mean that their business would cease to exist or maybe would still exist but they'd be dealing in hacked tractors that have had the warranties expire and have been sold and resold til someone says "yeah, I can jailbreak this".

When I pulled my 1961 Austin Healey out of the barn which I had stored it for about 20+ years, it was very similar to that. Engine bay completely filled with animal nests as well as carcasses. In total after cleaning out the engine compartment by hand, there was an additional 9-10 shop vacs full of poop. In retrospect I wish I never had put it in the barn which I thought was “safe“. It’s been a slow process rebuilding everything including a frame swap with transferring the existing monocoque structure to the new frame. But it will be worth every penny when I’m finished.

Interior (every single piece) should be totally trashed and replaced, but if the floor boards and frame rails aren’t rotted then there is a lot of potential there. A DIY guy would probably be willing to take a project like this on. It’s definitely not worth it to have a shop do a restoration.

The "design" on the floor was to put moisture trapping fiber over the metal and under a rubberized wall to wall floor mat. The PERFECT way to make something rust.

The term *"barn find"* has seen its definition slip. It used to mean something that was in pretty good condition, perhaps suffering a particular mechanical malady that caused the owner to park it, but it was essentially out of the weather enough that the body was good and even the paint might come back a bit with a buffing.
A friend of mine had bought off of a neighbor a '72 Dodge D200 camper-special, the owners had bought it new and within a few years had some kind of transmission problem that caused them to park it next to the house, with the cabover camper still on it. This camper protected the cab, doors, bed sides, and tailgate, for the better part of 30 years, leaving only the front clip to weather in the sun. It was more a 'barn find' than this SJ.
I would like to see the term come back around to its roots, and not be used, in the parlance of Charlie from Sarah-N-tuned, as a bucket of rust and a VIN tag.

That is just sad. Imagine how nice it was when new.

Omega auto clinic is becoming a restoration shop now! Soon you'll be doing frame off rebuilds, extensive bodywork, chasing down rare trim pieces, and fixing up hacked up backyard work from the 1980s!

Except, all those pet restoration projects get dropped within a month. Just collect dust. And never finished.

We still have our 1977 Continental Town Car my dad had as first car. It’s still fun to drive. We got it fully restored in 2010 as it’s been sitting in garage from 1995-2010

Imagine how amazing it would have been to restore this vehicle - what a challenge! That would have made the ultimate TH-cam car restoration series, for sure.
And please do not scrap it, sell it in parts instead.
    Cheers

I really don't see the problem in trying to restore this. Great for someone who is mechanically inclined and want a winter project. I always see the potention. I would take this on.

I emptied out hoarder homes, that had hoarded vehicles sometimes...for 15 years. I've seen this and other crazy stuff a few thousand times.

My uncle had one, learned how to drive in it . Great memories

I had the same vehicle, same color combo, 360 AMC V8, TH400 trans. and QuadraTrac transfer case with low range locking center diff; my great uncle bought it new in ‘79 as a winter/hunting truck, I bought it from him in the early 90s. Great truck, horrendous fuel economy, mine got T-boned and totaled.
