This is a VERY deep and well designed game. Very interested in how you get on. The Culture and decadence mechanics are truly unique. It is vital that rulers pay attention to the mechanics of how these interact. Also....In your second battle v the Snnones where there was a very restricted frontage which favoured them, that is based on the terrain in the region......if you check each region it gives you a frontage that the battle can be fought. So a mountainous region will only allow a small frontage of maybe 4 units whereas a plains region has a frontage of 12. So small combat power armies can defeat much stronger ones as the stronger army may only be able to deploy a small fraction of their forces in the mountain passes for example......
The Field of Glory games are based off the old table top game DBA (De Bellis Antiquitatis), which I played 25 yrs ago in high school. Now they've seem to adapt the that to a grand strategy game like Total War and Paradox have done.
@@PraetorianHiJynx Yep.. Richard Bodley Scott helped create DBA and Field of Glory. There use to be online version of DBA I use to play 15 years ago before they stopped updating. Glad I finally found Field of Glory because it continues the tradition. www.dbaol.com is the old site. I use to love miniature wargaming. People still do it but now I am hooked on pc versions.
I never really got into the tabletop gaming. I had a friend in the army who was super into the Warhammer tabletop game. He had dozens of those cool looking figurines. That's the limit of my experience lol
@@PraetorianHiJynx If the enemy falls into the checkerboard open spots while clashing with your second line, your third line can hit them diagonally, right?
Excellent playthrough and I cant wait for this game to come out. Got plenty of Fog2 battles on my channel that show key winning strategies some that can deliver quick kos against more numerous armies.
Imperator rome right now is as bad as Victoria 2 is without the expansions it needs alot of work I read the dev diaries for the 1.1.0 Pompey patch but that only addresses a few of the issues I saw in your playthrough. Hopefully like HOI 4 it gets a few expansions that really add to the game play. For example I personally can't play hoi4 without man the guns or waking the tiger
Yeah I think it's going to be a long process to turn Imperator into a good game. However, I think Paradox can eventually do it, as long as they're willing to stick with it and not abandon the game as they have others.
The reason they put your troops in that formation is because the enemy would have to normally fight three on one, three of your troops against one of theirs that's what they did in real life. That way they could reinforce one another and surround the enemy as needed some modern militaries use a similar strategy today just a tiny bit different because of technology.
Yeah I know how it works in real life, but in game terms it doesn't seem like a smart way to deploy your units as it's very easy for them to be flanked.
Thanks a bunch for this the tutorials are as much use as a chocolate fireguard this details the flow of play and i have been dumped into a multiplayer this will help me survive
reason they stagger the ranks is when you fall back or they rout they can run through and not disperse the whole unit (lose) I love the FOG2 game will pick up the Empires tonight
I first saw this game and said "Is this literally just a better Imperator Rome?" *Like really, how the hell did Paradox drop the ball that hard* *I don't even like turn based games most of the time*
Yeah I wasn't a big fan of Imperator at launch. Paradox is doing a lot to improve the game though. I feel that this game does certain things better than Imperator, while Imperator does other things better. At this moment I enjoy Empires more, but I think that could change as Paradox continues to improve their game.
Imperator will get better, don't get me wrong. You'll just have to buy a boatload of DLC first. (I mean I love Paradox but 1/2 of the money I've spent on games has gone into their DLC)
Yes very true. Though Paradox also provides a lot of free content in the patches as well. Overall I love their considerable post-launch support for their games, but yeah, certainly hurts the wallet :D
@@PraetorianHiJynx The Cicero beta is already there. Have looked at it last weekend. It does finally feel like what I was hoping at launch. For Emprires and FGII, i like the fact that you can have a better impact in a fight contrary to EUIV and I:R.
@@terrencesauve I disagree. Cicero is certainly a big step forward for Imperator, but the game still has a lot of work to go to improve the many issues.

"I don't know why they set them up this way..." The game set you up in the republican "Triplex Acies" in the quincunx formation. That's why the units were setup in that checkerboard formation in three lines. Great video by the way. I've put this game on my wishlist on steam for now along with Field of Glory II. Do we need to have the expansions or can we just use FOGII to fight our exported battles?
I just mean when it comes to game terms, it doesn't make much sense to have the infantry deployed that way as they can be easily flanked. I don't have any of the FOG II expansions and I'm able to fight the exported battles. In addition, there's a note in Empires' game manual that states that all unit types you bring to the battle will be present in FOGII regardless of if you have the DLC for them or not.
@@amrg211 it's true. IF you want to play the tactical battles, you need what (in our opinion) is the best tactical "miniatures" wargame, FOG II. If you don't have FOG II, you can see the immediate result or see the battle evolving, fighting after fighting, but with no direct control on the troops (disclaimer: i work for Slitherine)
Not surprising, FOG2 doesn't seem like AGEOD's style. Still though, it would have been awesome if Slitherine could have had the two teams work together. I suppose it's understandable though, as AGEOD had a certain vision for how Empires battles would work.
I believe you are correct. Field of Glory, I think was based off a table top tactical game. FoG2 I think may not have been directly from tabletop but from the table top via Field of Glory 1.
The tabletop rules are still available from Osprey Publishing but FOG2 has many improvements plus real FOG of war and you can redo some moves and it’s easy to estimate distances unlike the table top game and I do a lot better with this version than I used to on the tabletop. Importing is actually really quick and easy, I would prefer the FOG2 battle system was part of Empires, but it didn't bother me too much. I don't enjoy the Empires battle system, largely because so many units are completely destroyed, but I don't think it's unfair.
It was an alright game. I had fun with it, and honestly I enjoyed it more than Paradox's Imperator: Rome at launch. In the finale episode of this series I go over all the things I liked and didn't like about it :)
I don't know, perhaps they wanted the game to have a different pace (since the FOGII battles take so long), so wanted that style of battles to be optional. Really can't say, but I would prefer if the battles were part of Empires.
They are two separate genres of game. FOG II was released well before this one was. Empires is designed to be a turn based grand strategy game. Its not trying to be a Total war game. It has its own internal battle system but they kindly gave us the option to export the battles out to FOG II and play them that way if we choose. FOG II was built solely as an ancient world tactical battle simulator. It allows finer control over the outcome of a battle but its not required to play the base game. Empires is fully playable and fun even without exporting and in fact you probably don't want to export every battle just the important ones as FOG II battles can take up to an hour.
