    Hagrid still looks like a minifigure, Ultron just looks like a action figure.

    the problem with those figures is they're just *too* detailed that they just look... wrong. Even with specially molded pieces Lego officially uses, they don't use too many and most importantly, they still maintain a generally lego like look. These use way to many custom pieces and those pieces don't look like lego. Especially with the head pieces. The official minifigure head has a look that helps with making it recognizable, and those figures just ruin that. In general, even custom molded pieces for lego figures maintain the general shape of a standard minifugure piece. These deviate too much from that general shape that it just doesn't work and thats the problem

      I agree, I buy a few knock off figures occasionally (not hyper expensive customs because I don’t have the money) but I am very picky on what I pick up, if a figure doesn’t look like lego, whether that be a custom mould that just doesn’t work (like a lot of fnaf minifigs i’ve seen) or they just look bad like a lot of big gigs do, personally my favourite way to represent the lizard is through the use of the lego batman movie killer croc, it’s not perfect but it works, plus my display is a combination of mcu, comic, and other origins so it doesn’t matter if it’s not faithful to a specific version

      What you're describing sounds like a Lego uncanny valley.

      @@Boricua_User146 Yeah! Exactly! When you add in to many custom parts and extra details, it just becomes a kind of lego uncanny valley because it stops looking like a lego minifigure. Stuff like the death trooper armour & the hagrid fig don't change too much overall from a standard minifigure. There's still enough of the general shapes and design elements of a minifig that it can be easily recognized as one. The custom minifigs he shows off here just, aren't. There's to much deviating from or covering up the minifig elements that it just looks wrong

    I think the issue with stuff like the lizard or ultron figures compared to stuff like Hagrid or Eggman is simplicity. New molds are only used when absolutely necessary and even then it's done to a minor degree

      Also the classic ultron could be added in a 10 dollar set, that's needed for someone like ironman

      In my opinion the lizard doesn't looks bad, depending on the version you are adapting. The one from the movies is similar to the minifigure presented here, while the one from the animated show from the 90's isn't similar and should require a special mold for the head.
      Meanwhile, Ultron is extremely differente and I believe it REALLY needs a special mold for the helmet. Despite that, I prefer lego sets with little prints in the legs and arms rather than customs with tons of detail

    my take is, if you don't want a lego styled figure, why even bother adhering to the base lego body in the first place? just buy an action figure if legos aren't detailed enough for you

      i don't think it's a problem. Making a realistic lego custom just shows the creativity of the maker. They look amazing

    To me, simplicity is the hallmark of Lego itself. I admit Jin.Custom really nailed it for proportion & detail, but for a somekind of KO this was too expensive for me and detailed paint took away the aesthetics of Lego itself.

    Customs are fine as long as they follow Lego standard when it comes to printing. I wouldn't mind custom molded pieces since it adds detail but I can see why people don't like them.

    I really wish Lego made a leg type that’s between the avatar and regular legs
    Honestly Lego needs more smooth parts to represent more body types
    Like
    The Mr. Incredible torso, and perhaps a modified hagrid torso that is meant to look like a fat body that goes on regular minifig legs and uses the hagrid arms

    if they arent lego like then you might as well just get action figures. the over abundance of molds and prints make it look nothing like lego

    There’s definitely a difference with custom molds when it comes to new helmets for Star Wars and whatever that ultron and mark 1 are. They lose the lego look and touch. Mini figs aren’t supposed to be 1 to 1 of movie characters. They’re stylized versions. If you want proper height or design buy action figures not lego

    In my opinion, the LEGO style is a little cartoony. You’re not going for completely realistic or high detail because (as seen in 2004/5 Harry Potter sets) it looks weird and off putting. It’s why some minifigs look good with non printed legs and why we don’t get shoe printing that often - it’s not necessary.

  • @jakegammer64

    When they start looking like action figures with over exaggerated detail, just go buy some minimates if you want detailed Lego-like figures or better yet go the whole hog and buy a marvel legend.
    LEGO figs were always supposed to be simple, this demand for overspecifed detail is what brings the figs down.

  • @Garinovitch
    @Garinovitch 2 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

    Honestly, I think these custom figures look horrible as hell.
    Detail is nice, but too detail and it's like, fuck imagination, just buy an action figure if you want 100% accuracy at this point.

    i think the main issue is that the customs have a diffrent design language then lego. how to distil and understand that is a large task i must say. an example of customs making new molds but still looking the part is in the world of kenner starwars figures. there is a guy who goes by the name stan solo who has absorbed the design language of these older kenner toys and makes customs that fit in perfectly with the older figures. learning what angles what colors what level of detail lego uses and much more would be needed to make customs that look the part

    I don't like intricate moulded details for arms and legs and even torsos. A chest plate with printed detail looks great but a chest plate with moulded pipes and wires is too much. For me at that point, it doesn't look like Lego anymore. There's a balance of getting accurate to the character and IP to a degree but the Lego style and io needs to come through otherwise I may as well just buy a action figure and not this weird in-between. I love custome moulds for hair pieces and helmets but I still need them to fit Legos style, so no overly sharp points and all that. To me excessive moulding on arms legs and torsos end up looking cheap as it looks like there's no consistent identity. It's like if Minecraft started using hexagons and pyramid shapes with human shaped hands and feet. It started to look uncanny and budget made despite technically being more detailed

    I feel like custom companies should try harder to make prints that more match legos style, and some of the custom moulded pieces feel too fake

    I think there is definitely a line in the sand where u have to choose between minifigs or action figures everything u said here is correct about how Lego would do it differently and all but i disagree with on those aftermarket fig as I do not like the look of them cause they stray way too far away from Lego's look. U should just collect lego and action figures, it's not like its too expensive 👀🤣😂😜

    If its not using pad printing and ABS plastic, then the custom is bad.

    • @foodisscarce
      @foodisscarce 6 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      i would agree with the abs plastic thing, but i don't think pad printing is all that much better than something like uv printing. i own many of firestar toys' spiderverse minifigures and unless they are under very heavy lighting, you can't really tell that they're printed in a different way from lego's own minifigures.

    Maybe they should try dumbing the figures down a little and making more of them so the trust-fund buttheads don’t buy them all up for status symbols.
