I remain forever baffled that the Wii-U never got a virtual tabletop. In any other timeline it would be the console remembered for expertly on-boarding players into TTRPGs. Slap on an existing ruleset like DND 5e alongside a basic dungeon maker and you’d print money. That controller is like the perfect DM screen!
@@humblemudgamesI’ll never forget all the great times i had with my brother on super Mario maker. I was really happy to see it got a sequel on switch. Hopefully it gets even better with a 3rd? Idk how they’d do that tbh lol
Perhaps I only feel this way because I was a young lad, but the Wii U era was the absolute most fun time to be a Nintendo fan. Simultaneously, it was the worst. But to me, the high highs outweighed the low lows. It was a small club of enthusiasts who knew we were having the most fun while the rest of the gaming space laughed at us. The Nintendo Directs, Miiverse, and midnight/morning launches for games and amiibo made it feel like a weird little community. The game releases were sparse, but they were high quality - some of the best titles in Nintendo's history - which made each new game all the more exciting. The anticipation was as fun as playing the games. We didn't eat often for those few years, but when we did we ate well.
I feel like this was my experience, but with the Wii. I LOVED the Nintendo Wii and defended the hell out of it back in the day. The Smash Bros Dojo debuted during this era. Mario Strikers Charged was awesome, I played Mario Kart Wii a ton, Medal of Honors Heroes 2 with 32 player online, the Virtual Console, Excite Truck - I mean, I thought it all was awesome, despite what critics say! Sounds like I am a tad older than you, so I guess being a kid during a certain generation does influence it. The Wii U has great games, I think I was just a little burnt out on Nintendo at the time and not vibing as much with what they were doing outside of Smash Bros. But now, I really really enjoy the Wii U. It's funny how things change.
No, I'm a fellow Old. I was in college during the Wii U era. The Wii defined my high school experience - Brawl, Twilight Princess, Red Steel, Muramasa, Okami, Sin & Punishment, Black Ops - like you said in the video, plenty enough games to appeal to a teenage boy of the era.
Aw yeah! I hope you enjoy it! I'd definitely recommend looking into a battery upgrade for the Wii U gamepad and an external hard drive (you'll need a Y cable to connect it & power it). But yeah especially once custom firmware is installed, it's a beast!
As a fan of the Wii U, I have to agree that it didn't deserve all the hate it got! 💚I started having my weekly game nights with my Wii U as the centerpiece and that was long before I ever modded it. It also has some of the very few controllers that don't hurt to use for extended play sessions; ergonomics FTW! 💚
The Gamepad is so much lighter than you'd think, too! Only 6 ounces more than the Switch. And it truly does feel so much better in your hands. I've had to get grips for my Vita and Switch, but not my Gamepad. It really is THE party machine!
@@humblemudgames I actually liked the weight of the gamepad it was nice and hefty and felt good in the hands but not too heavy or light. Just right. Goldilocks would be proud LOL
there is so much i could say about the Wii U, that I have said again and again. I didn't get mine until 2015 when I got the Mario Maker Bundle. If I could have got one sooner I would have but I just did not have the money in that time in my life. Defintely one of my favorite consoles of all time. The Switch is so bloated with games from not just the wii u , but other places as well. It feels more like a greatest hits console than the Wii U does. And no one says Bob Dylan's Greatest hits is their favorite Bob Dylan album, most people say Blonde on Blonde or something like that. The Wii U has a type of charm the Switch wishes it had.
I see what you're saying about the Switch being a greatest hits system -- I do think the biggest appeal of the Switch is having a system that can play ports of PS1, Xbox 360, Wii U, etc on the go. Of course we have some bangers like Mario Odyssey, not discounting those at all -- but yeah, the Wii U has more charm & the Gamepad feels a lot better in the hands.
I have so much nostalgia for Nintendo Land! My buddy and I played it all the time and tried to beat the Zelda and Metroid games all the way thru! So much fun!
I thankfully got the Wii U for Christmas, I think the second year it was out? I had an absolute blast with that thing. It was an awesome companion to my PS4 in college
I was so late to the game with PS4, I didn't have one until 2016 I believe. But yeah, I could imagine having the Wii U and PS4 together in 2013 was probably sick!
Way to represent the Wii u. I still don't know what exactly went wrong with it, but it's a competent console for modding and it offers the best asymmetrical multiplayer experiences of all time.
Thank you, I agree! I think its lack of success was due to an unfortunate cocktail of multiple things that just didn't work out in the public eye. And unfortunately that means its library is pretty small by certain standards -- but there's still a lot of fun to be had on it.
I am glad to see the Wii U finally getting some respect. It had it's issues, but man was it a great console with some really unique games and controls. I would highly recommend Star Fox Zero with a second player. It can be a little rough around the edges but it's unique and a fun co op experience. Great video as always.
Star Fox Zero is actually one of the first games I tried on my Wii U this summer and I DID like it a lot more than most people seem to online. But I hadn't played enough of it past that one play session to confirm that, so I didn't want to talk about it in this video quite yet. But I'd love to revisit it.
wow! just as someone who loves the DS being able to play DS games that way is so awesome. it breathes a whole new life into that console, especially if any of the games could be up-res'd!
I really liked the wii u but had no idea it was so versatile with the functionality to play the ds games with the two screens. Very cool! My friends actually pitched in to buy me the wii u after I lost all my stuff, apartment and vehicle in a town wide flood.
Oh my gosh, that's so nice of your friends, but I hope everything has recovered since then! My state was heavily impacted by Hurricane Helene, so I understand that fear. Yeah, even without mods, the Wii U could do incredibly cool things!
@humblemudgames Oh yeah; well recovered. It was back in 2013 but I still hate rising rivers. 😳 Sorry your state got hit hard. I'll have to plug in my wii u soon. Cool video!
Glad to see more people starting to love and enjoy the Wii U years after its end! I can say that while I never owned a Wii U(or 3DS for that matter), I really love the Wii U/3DS era and its consoles. It was just a fun time, and even if some of the games and ads from this era may seem weird or "cringe" to a lot of people, I dunno...I just love it, I mean...that era had Reggie and the other Nintendo higher-ups dance on the songs from the Yo-Kai Watch games so I love it just for that. Also, besides the games you mentioned in the video, there are two other games I know that originally released exclusively for the Wii U: Lego City Undercover, a GTA-inspired open world Lego game that uses the Wii U gamepad as if you'd actually hold a police supercomputer(it was re-released on the Switch but from what I heard the gamepad features got turned into pretty clunky menus and button inputs) and Ben 10 Omniverse 2 that was a weird action endless runner shoot'em up game genre mix that uses the gamepad as the omnitrix from the show from what I remember(this game also is on PS3, 3SS and Xbox360 so I guess that may be better ways to play the game but they don't have the cool gamepad use so...).
I'm aware of Lego City Undercover, and had heard the Switch port is pretty clunky and doesn't run too well! I got it for free from the PS Plus subscription so maybe I should compare PlayStation and Wii U versions, haha. I had never heard of the Ben 10 game, but I did grow up with the show. I'll look into that!

I haven't tried Mass Effect on there, but I should look into it. The Wii U gamepad is SO much better for the hands than the Switch, for sure. I'm also loving Affordable Space Adventures.
I’ve been pretty loud as a Switch hater ever since I got one. But I loved the WiiU. Probably mostly due to nostalgia or something. I think what it really is has more to do with how overwhelmingly anti-wholesome and anti creative I find Nintendo to be as a company these days. Really just play PC indie games for the most part but I still fire up my WiiU every so often. I haven’t touched my switch since I dusted it off just long enough to play Metroid Dread. Which I was also underwhelmed by lol
I like the Switch overall and liked Dread a lot too, but -- my Wii U and 2DS just have SO much personality. I totally agree with you that they feel way more wholesome.

What changed is that you finally saw the light, lmao. There has never been *less* of a reason to play a WiiU than there is now, but it has always been a good console and unfairly judged. I actually stopped playing it years ago myself and only have vague plans to revive its usage again as a retro plattform/"I changed my mind on playing original Xenoblade X on emulator, i'd rather play it on official hardware"-piece in a few years. The truth is that being the best console on the planet would not help your case much if essencially your entire game library has been absorbed by a better one. Even OG Xenoblade X, despite still being planned for when fanservers go up, is nowhere near as urgent anymore now that the remaster is coming out on Switch. It is just a fact that the Switch has an infinitly better list of games and that will only get worse over time and not better. 12:21 Sadly, the WiiU VC Emulators are just worse than the Switch NSO emulators on average. Not a fault of the console, but it definitly dampens the mood. Luckily, some games like the Zelda 64 games have a "get out of jail free" card by having better Wii VC releases that are playable on the vWii. Also, being able to just...play Xenoblade 1 with the full convenience of a native WiiU game was just a level of genius that I have otherwise not seen from Nintendo.
yeah I agree that the switch is a better console at the end of the day, I wasn't really trying to argue necessarily that the Wii U is better or not, other than the charm factor & ergonomic factor, but the Wii U still has its place. I definitely see the light now. I don't think it's even in my top 5 favorite consoles, but I still love the Wii U. Emulation isn't fantastic on it but it works really well for the things I use it for the most, like GBA, DS, etc. And I did get GameCube games like Phantasy Star Online working on my Wii U gamepad, like I hinted at doing in my video, and that's been glorious too.
I didn't own one and if i went back in time and had the chance i still wouldnt but i feel like it was underrated and very poorly advertised. My friends that had a Wii asked for the WiiU but their parents thought it was just the same device or a scam thing.
Yeah, I think that initial reveal really hurt it. I rewatched it myself when I was making this video, and not once do they mention it's a new console. Yet, they mention "new controller" a dozen times. So I can see why parents were confused. It's an awesome console to have today, but unfortunately they're not as dirt cheap as Nintendo Wiis are, so it's understandable to not feel like picking one up today. Plus all the Switch ports.
