I think whoever says “musicals are cheesy and boring,” um, it’s not the 1950s anymore???? Jk I love 1950s musicals! But yeah, i feel like vintage musicals actually might fit the “cheesy, boring” stereotype but any musical after 1960 definitely not
it’s mine for me 100% my teacher hates the altos (i’m one) but she put me with her obvious favourites, the sops, so idk i think she likes 😭 (i can sing soprano well, i’m just naturally an alto1)
7:41 Aw that reminds me of one of the girls at my school. After casting came out I got the role she wanted and she was very passive aggressive. I was singing Phantom of the opera with the male lead, we were dating at the time, for fun. She came in the room and the first thing she said was that I was flat, I knew I wasn’t, but I asked her to sing it then and she cracked on the higher notes at the end.
Yes with Florida state thespians i barely made it to my room in time for the performance i did an ensemble scene so i couldnt go ahead with my fast walking plus the need for us to get food at every concession
Fun story about my theatre career: I went to this school of the arts and tried out for acting and dance (because I’d had previous dance lessons before I was ever into acting). So I BOMB the theatre audition and do an aerial at the dance tryouts. End of story: I got in for dance. I dread it. I complain to everyone about it and they’re probably sick of me lmao. However, I tried out for a side program they have and got in for theatre. My first practice is tomorrow 😌✌️✨
Hi! I was in Annie about two years ago and I was Grace! Lily has a lot of energy, so make sure to have that! Be yourself, and if you have some anxiety about it, make sure you take some deep breaths and make sure to take care of yourself before the audition, wether it means taking care of your vocal chords or whatever seems fit. And I wish you the best of luck! I’m sure you’ll do great!
Here’s a theater story: When I was in middle school, all the shows were directed by parent volunteers. It was a pretty unspoken rule that 8th graders always got leads and every other grade was ensemble/minor roles. But when I was in 6th grade, they did into the woods jr. and none of the 8th grade guys could sing high enough to be Jack, so I got the role. The amount of bullying I faced for being a 6th grader was unbelievable... like it wasn’t that serious y’all... but anyways I slayed Giants in the Sky so🤪 Fast forward to 7th grade, we were doing Willy Wonka Jr and I got Charlie (as I should) and the 8th graders couldn’t handle that and would try to actively sabotage the show. They would intentionally steal my lines, interrupt my lines, etc. but it ended up working out (except for an incident with Veruca Salt which I will get into later). In my 8th grade year, we did Mary Poppins Jr., and I was put in the ensemble. Ngl, that shit HURT. But I was okay with it and I asked the directors what I could’ve improved in my audition (yeah, I was that kid... but I was just trying to make it a learning experience). The director proceeded to tell me she thought I had the best audition and that I was phenomenal. And I was like “so... why am I in ensemble?” And she said “well it’s just that you’ve been the lead for the past 2 years so we wanted to give some of the other kids a chance to shine!” And I put on a fake smile but really I wanted to punch her out. Okay, Veruca Salt story time. It was 7th grade, and I wasn’t the only 7th grader who got a lead, this girl got Veruca. The 8th graders were super salty about this even though she is SO talented and nice but they were so mean to her. While she was singing “I want it now”, they had ensemble members pick her up and place her into a trash bin (as part of the choreography- the bin was the “nut chute”) But the 8th graders like, THREW her in. Thankfully that’s sort of the end of the show for her character, but still. She had to go to the hospital after the show. She was a pretty small girl so she had bruises all over and hurt her ankle. But it’s okay because there was karma. We had bubble machines (I guess for magic effect or whatever) and it was someone’s job to wipe up the bubbles between certain scenes that we used them. But one scene they just forgot to? Whether that was intentional or not I don’t know. But Willy Wonka (really mean 8th grade boy) ended up slipping and falling flat on his ass in front of everyone. So those are my theater stories! I thought maybe the 8th grade drama would end after I left, but apparently not, because the next year a 7th grader got the lead role, but people bullied her to the point where she quit the show :( I edited the Veruca part to clarify that she WAS supposed to be in the trash bin. That was part of the blocking. What WASN’T meant to happen was all those kids THROWING her violently into the bin. They were supposed to just lift her and then place her feet first so that she could just sit in there until the bin got rolled off.

Heres a funny theatre story. So one year my school was putting on a performance of Beauty and the Beast, and i was casted as a villager. My best friend was also in this performance and played Cogsworth. Now in our free time we would practice lines and so I pretty much memorized all her lines. Now on opening night as she was walking up some stairs to get the the first scene she was in, she tripped and hit her head on the railing and fell unconscious. The scene was coming up and there was no one to play her part. Now i just heard about this incident a couple seconds before the scene was going to begin. Then i rushed up on to the stage without anyone noticing me. Soon the light came up and i was now Cogsworth. I was still in my villager costume so this was a bit awkward. The actors and audience was a bit shocked at first but we still when on with the scene. My friend was still unconscious for the next couple scenes but the show went on. Now in the scene before “Be our Guest” i was still i her place but I heard someone whispering my name and I looked backstage and there was the stage manger and my friend, not unconscious. I slowly went behind the backstage curtain and my friend went on stage. Thats was a heck of a story
