Very helpful, Alyssa! You, Audrey Coyne and Marie-Anne Lecoeur have taken my wardrobe analysis to a level I couldn’t reach on my own. I now know what’s missing (not much, honestly), what needs replacing (only due to age), and what pieces are the standouts and classics that define my style. Thank you for sharpening my eye and helping me keep my credit card in my wallet.
They are my three 'go-to' gals, too! I have learned to look at my wardrobe in a whole new light, thanks to them. It's actually a pleasure getting dressed now.
Again im a male and I love coming through to check out your vids. Style has no sex. I pick up so many tips to apply to my own style and wardrobe. Thanks!
I agree! I am very girl, and watch Gentleman’s Gazette for classic grown up tips. I like to apply the dapper, gentlemanly advice to my own life. Good is good.
You also look fabulous in everything!! This information is life changing, I've used it every day this week, anxiety of looking at a closet full of clothes with nothing to wear is gone. Such fabulous info thank you so much!!
This has totally cleared up why I’m struggling with my current wardrobe. In the name of minimalism I switched to a capsule wardrobe…but gave up a lot of my “staples” in the process. No wonder I got bored! A wardrobe full of basics can get boring. Time to add in a couple feel-good pieces and maybe 1 statement piece. Thank you for this sweet and helpful video!
Daria Andronescu says that you should get staples first and afterwards find out which basics you need to compliment the staples. Greetings from Germany!
This was hugely helpful insight. I kept piling on basics and never felt like I could put together an outfit that felt like me but now that I’ve added a few more iterations of my staples - button downs, sweaters, vintage jackets, and corduroy jackets and pants in my color palette for me - everything is better!! Thank you!!!!
This has really helped me understand that for me a button up is a basic not a staple, even though people like you can rock it as a staple. For me, I need to style a button up well to make it feel like “me”, I can’t just wear it with minimal styling and feel myself. I’m learning so much about style from you, thank you!
Great definition for basics vs staples! My staples are definitely cardigans ... solid, herringbone, floral, etc. My basics are the shell, tee, etc under the cardigan. Just remember that there are not enough days left in your life (no matter what age you are) to wear something you don't feel FABULOUS in💚
So I have been watching you religiously and simply can’t wait for Sunday. I sandwich your videos between Church attendance @9:45 and Bible Study @ 1:30. Your ability to explain your concepts and ideas to a complete “non-creative” such as me, is more than a talent or a gift. I have learnt so much from you and WILL attend one of your virtual styling sessions if it is the last thing I do. I have purchased items from Everlane, Nordgreen and Organic Basics because you mentioned them and might I add, without regret. THANK YOU Alyssa.
Alyssa!! Thank you for this!!! I have spent most of my adult life in a black polo neck (UK term for a turtle neck) and thought it was basic. But I've just this moment realised it's actually a staple for me. I can't tell you how much sense this makes. I cannot thank you enough 💕
I think the category of 3rd completer pieces is my Staple. I wear them throughout every season, vests, jackets, blazers, cardigans , kimonos , ruanas , ponchos... My style is more boho and maximal and whyI joke that I can never be a minimalist, though I can stop shopping and really play in my closet and in the new year be very conscious of adding in new pieces...
This is really interesting, I am absolutely happy to watch you dive in deep. I have a lot of basics, such as jeans and long-sleeved tees, that do need styling to look more interesting. I think my staples are often structural, assymetrical or draped pieces that give personality to my basics, such as a tulip-shaped skirt, wrap top, coatigan. These, along with accessories such as silver jewellery, various scarves and hats make me feel more me.
Love. Thank you for this. I love how genuine and authentic you are in your overall vibe. A lot of other influencers out there are difficult to digest because the authenticity isn’t there. Bravo!
I love your videos! You explain things so well. I think for me, my Basics are often jeans and Staples are tops. It looks to me that you kind of operate the opposite way. Fascinating!
Thanks for tour new video which seems to me very useful!! My closet is suffering a positive Metamorfosis since I subscribed to your videos. My attitude towards over consumption is changing progresively and I am also encouraging my daughter to LOVE her closet . Very grateful. You are doing an extraordinary job. Adiós guapa! Madrid Spain
Loved it the first time you went over this, and loving this reminder! Ciao Bella! Always appreciate the depth of your videos and your reflections. Never hesitate to go deeper and take us with you. Thank you for being here in this online universe and sharing your world with us. Your creativity shines through everything you do Alyssa! Biggest hugs!!! n💖💖💖
Your videos, personal styling sessions, & style your closet workshops are always a cerebral fun experience. Truly enjoy how you compare & contrast aspects of style to refine our own sense of style. Thank you for this weekly walk down a more stylish road;)
Ciao Alyssa Thank you for this video, I’ve learned a lot , I loved the example you gave comparing turtle necks on you and on Jennifer Aniston to illustrate your point Your content is awesome 💜
I love this kind of deep dive! This really makes sense to me and helps me understand why, with certain pieces, I feel like I need to do more styling to make them "me."
Very interesting! Another way and reason to play around with what I have. I bet I will find some new outfit combinations by evaluating my wardrobe in this way.
This was so helpful! It really has me thinking about what is a staple in my wardrobe vs a basic. Thank you! I look forward to you videos every Sunday. Baltimore City, Maryland
What a great way of re-seeing your wardrobe! Took me a while to get my head around it, but once I did I identified a few staples and put them to one side. I know they will look great with minimal styling if needed and will reflect 'me' and I'll instantly feel great in them. Thanks once again Alyssa xxx
Since I love to have a casual and basic wardrobe ALL the time, for me a staple is also my statement piece. It’s still simple, but has a little something that makes it stand out more!😊😊
So cool that one turtleneck style can be basic, but another style be staple. You definitely have Aniston-vibes in the heavy turtleneck! Thanks for the breakdown!
This is really helping me put outfits together! Basics are my long sleeve ts in my colors, staples are dark and med wash jeans and jacket, flat boots, cashmere v necks; statement are my navy faux leather motto, suede booties with snake accent and Sabina Savage Scarves (although they could be staples?). This is also helping me get rid of things that are really none of these.
Really helpful thanks Alyssa - I am going to do a wardrobe check today. I suspect I've been confusing these 2 things. I love how you break down concepts to make it super clear and your visual examples pull it all together. Your style is impeccable ❤️
That was really, really helpful! I appreciate learning the “grammar” of styling. I plan to watch this a few more times as I analyze my wardrobe. Thanks!
Very interesting and thought provoking. I would say my staples are slim straight jeans (have loads they’re my go to) unstructured crew neck jumper in various materials, cotton to merino and cashmere even better if it’s striped (go with everything, always pack one even when going on holiday somewhere hot just in case, have them in all my fave colours) colourful chunky funky heeled ankle boots, can’t go wrong with them, they make my outfits more me. Basics for me are plain shirts and T shirts long and short sleeved and black leggings, tend to use them as layers to wear with other printed skirts, tunics, trousers etc as plain dress down items to make the statement thing pop. I think I have far too many statement pieces in my wardrobe as I’m like a magpie and I’m drawn to colourful patterns and prints and everything sparkly!
Love this! Must know where your point tie flats with strap (& buckle(?)) and black and white purse are from…. I am working on honing in my basics and staples. 😉🤩🥰
Interesting defining what is a staple, a basic and a statement piece. I know I have these, but I never think about how I'm using them in an outfit. I will review my wardrobe with this in mind. Thank you Alyssa!
This is a really interesting way to think about outfits! It kind of answers that question of "Why do I like these pieces but not the outfit?" Now I want to know, what is the difference between a staple and statement piece?
That's really useful to know the difference between the two. I sometimes do this instinctively. Other times I struggle so I plan to organise things that fit the remit. I can then use accessories to add a little more impact of I feel edgy. Thanks 👌🏾
You are so right. ❤️. Staples: With me it is head-ware and shoes/boots with any heel of 2 inch or more. Real Flats take a LOT of effort for me to feel put together. I even bought some lifts to insert into some of my flats (sadly, the lifts do not work in all of them for various reasons).
Oh Alyssa! You are so gorgeous!! Love that video 💕 my basics are: 501, slim longsleeves, staples: clean kashmir jumpers, tailored trousers, my statements: a dramatic oversized silk blouse and a leather trouser and of course my silky longsleeved flower maxidress🥰
Eureka! There is a difference! ALWAYS learning w/your content. I see it as staples and "paperclips"(basics). 🤣 The latter help keep the afore cohesive, put together, "attached". Speaking of paperclips, note to oneself: get the @analuisa Alyssa necklace. 😍
Great lookbook! Staples for me are sweaters and white shirts and black faux leather pants. Cold climate. Must be warm! Have a great week in Montreal, Alyssa! Xo 🌹🌻🍮Joanne
The grey trousers are a killer. I wish, I can styled mine like 12 years ago, as I may said. And also love how you styled those wardrove pieces looks awesome CIAO Alyssa to provide ideas without shoqing a single piece😎 CIAO girl love it! And I missed Apollo😽 CIAO😽😘😎
To me, the difference between a 'basic' piece and a 'staple' piece is how often a I wear it. If it's a piece I wear at least 2-3x/mo (esp more!) that is a staple piece and I keep those front/center for easy access. Basics are the usual - typically solid-color shirts/pants/skirts that can be worn with a multitude of other items.
I love your videos they’re really good. I have a lot of basics in my wardrobe that can go with anything. My problem is that it’s 90° here still in the desert and it’s November.
I have a surprising amount of staples in my closet -- my university sweatshirt, a pair of mint sneakers, a gold coin necklace, a bright blue jacket, an accordion skirt, a light blue chiffon scarf with butterflies on it, a pair of indigo jeans that fit me well, etc
Awesome video!! I think I’m still a little confused...Your first look had a statement piece, but none of the others did. Is there a difference between a staple & statement item? Your explanation of a staple (in parts) conflated what I thought to be the meaning of a statement piece...Idk, I’m still learning.
Thanks for this Alyssa. It's such a helpful way to look at my closet. Question for you... would you ever say that a staple could be a colour? I have a couple of colours in my wardrobe that always lifts me regardless of the piece.
Dear Alyssa, this was too esoteric for me 🤣 but I do love how you encourage us to reeeeeaaally put thought in our choices---what we buy, what we keep, what we do with what we have. Keep it up!
Love this series! White button down is a staple for me..but I can't find the right now for busty, petite women..I don't want the whole oversized look..any ideas?
Thank you for the video! I’m curious if Montreal is much colder than Ottawa? I’d be very interested in your approach to style in cold weather. Do you have some cold climate style formulas? Thanks in advance!
This video was very helpful, but I think that now I am struggling to understand what is a staple and what is a statement for me because almost everything I own seems like a statement piece based on what I've read online. I definitely lack in basics though.
Yes! It would be 🆒 to 👁️👁️see Alyssa show us that cardigan💘sweetheart neckline hack. 😉Plus, there's a whole numbered series that details "#__ ways to style a scarf🧣" featuring Korean models on YT. Some of them also include super clever style tricks with cardi's. One showed a no-sew hack on how to crop a cardigan using a scarf & creative buttoning. 🤣Sadly, their explanations aren't always that detailed or completely understandable. 🤗Perhaps she can review them, & pick out some tricks that would work with her glamour/classic style in order to expand a styling video. Or, she could simply 📲shoot a short. ✌️💙🦋 💚 Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)
My style is a bit different from yours, but I really appreciate this video as it helps me to see that difference within my own wardrobe. Keep up the great work, Alyssa! 😊❤
It took me a while, but definitely watch her videos where she breaks down outfits into style elements. I now am able to look at an outfit on Pinterest and understand what is already in my closet that can approximate the look. (I also had to declutter some pieces so I could really assess my wardrobe.)
I feel like a light just went on. I tried stocking up on basics like black and white tshirts, singlets and plain shirts. I thought these were my staples. I never wore them much. I now realise my pretty printed silk shirts, boho blouses and dresses are my staples and the basics I mix them with are my jeans and jackets.
I love your style but maybe I have four months to dress even close to that. It’s difficult to dress with style in Phoenix. 8 months of serious heat , would love to see how you would dress with style for triple digit weather.

Audry Coyne used to be on my list but not anymore. Instead I love Frederique Bros. Look her up. She is vibrant and suits me better.
Like all those three ladies! Good advice and chic styling.
@@tamiewert808 Agreed 👍!

Love the differentiation of staples and basic. Never thought of it. Thanks

Ooh yes! I think statement and staples can interchange :)
Thank you for explaining the difference, Alyssa! Very helpful!
Really helpful thanks Alyssa - I am going to do a wardrobe check today. I suspect I've been confusing these 2 things. I love how you break down concepts to make it super clear and your visual examples pull it all together. Your style is impeccable ❤️
Very helpful and eye opening. Thank you for this video. Surely I will look at my clothes from a different perspective now.
I'll have to watch this again to really get what a staple and a basic is. It just went way too quickly but your lookbook tells the story of both.
Surely some unique perspective!! Loved it as always. Thank you for your hard work :)
I would say I have lots of basics in my wardrobe, but I can't come up with any staples. But I get the idea. I need a cozy pink sweater in a big way.
That was really, really helpful! I appreciate learning the “grammar” of styling. I plan to watch this a few more times as I analyze my wardrobe. Thanks!
Very interesting way to view basics and staples. Again, love your eye for fashion and knowledge ♥️
Loved it! Very instructive and inspirational. Well played.
Pleeeeeeeaaaase do more of this to help my brain understand - this feels groundbreaking!
Oh, my gosh! Awesome video! If you had a fan club, I’d want to be president! Thank you for uploading this video!
Shalom!

Loved this video...you spelled out so well the difference between the two....really helpful as I look at my closet for basics vs staples...Big Hugs...
You are amazing! I love your content and how you provide so many ideas to use what is in our closets. Thank you!!😀👠👛🧥
Your a great teacher. Thank you for sharing.
Great video. I’ve often thought there’s a difference in basics and staples but you’ve really defined it for me.

Just found your channel and you have such great style! I’m a big fan of how you wore the cardigan. Will have to look up that style hack!
I love your take on style and this is a great explanation! Thank you!
Always great content. I think red lipstick is a staple and basic. Everyday!
Thank you for holding good on your promise! You rockkkk!!
lol yes!!! xox
Need that basic cardigan turned into off the shoulder tip! Love your videos.
I am loving this video so much I've watched it 3 times. I swear. You make such good content!
♡ Great distinction! Have a great week!
Great great informative video. Beautiful examples!!

When I have an urge to shop for the sake of shopping I will literally rewatch one of your videos ❤️
Thank you Crystal!! xx
Awesome video!! I think I’m still a little confused...Your first look had a statement piece, but none of the others did. Is there a difference between a staple & statement item? Your explanation of a staple (in parts) conflated what I thought to be the meaning of a statement piece...Idk, I’m still learning.
Nicely put! Very helpfull
Thank you🍒
Thanks for this Alyssa. It's such a helpful way to look at my closet. Question for you... would you ever say that a staple could be a colour? I have a couple of colours in my wardrobe that always lifts me regardless of the piece.
absolutely! I think that's what would make it a staple ... it's got a bit of a twist that is personal!
I attend a workplace every day - never stopped - so I still have the two sets of clothing, work and other. My work staple is a button through dress.
Great differentiation! Love it!
Dear Alyssa, this was too esoteric for me 🤣 but I do love how you encourage us to reeeeeaaally put thought in our choices---what we buy, what we keep, what we do with what we have. Keep it up!
Alyssa could you please do a video about the difference between signature pieces and statement pieces? I'd be so grateful for that❤️
Thank you for the explanation with visual examples from your wardrobe.
Yes. But where did you get your beautiful black moto style jacket?
Fantastic explanation. Thank you
Love this series! White button down is a staple for me..but I can't find the right now for busty, petite women..I don't want the whole oversized look..any ideas?
Wow. I love this and the concepts!!!
it makes perfect sense! thank you
Thank you for the video! I’m curious if Montreal is much colder than Ottawa? I’d be very interested in your approach to style in cold weather. Do you have some cold climate style formulas? Thanks in advance!
It is about the same! I've done a few cold weather videos - they are older so maybe a revisit is needed!
This video was very helpful, but I think that now I am struggling to understand what is a staple and what is a statement for me because almost everything I own seems like a statement piece based on what I've read online. I definitely lack in basics though.
How did you do the basic cardigan hack?! Beautiful!

Oh I love this, it’s so true! For me that’s blazers…. 😂
Thank you
Depending on the whole outfit, a piece you would call basic can be suddenly the staple one
Easy to mix and match and transform
Ciao
My style is a bit different from yours, but I really appreciate this video as it helps me to see that difference within my own wardrobe. Keep up the great work, Alyssa! 😊❤
Thank you Amy, I'm glad it was helpful! xx
well I'm not paying attention in class, it seems. I want to go on a shopping binge every time I watch your vids :S
You will get there! I felt that way, too, for the first year 🙄
It took me a while, but definitely watch her videos where she breaks down outfits into style elements. I now am able to look at an outfit on Pinterest and understand what is already in my closet that can approximate the look. (I also had to declutter some pieces so I could really assess my wardrobe.)
My staples are sweaters. I love knitting them and wearing them. Now I don't feel so guilty over having a sweater wardrobe.
EXCELLENT video. Thank you.
I feel like a light just went on. I tried stocking up on basics like black and white tshirts, singlets and plain shirts. I thought these were my staples. I never wore them much. I now realise my pretty printed silk shirts, boho blouses and dresses are my staples and the basics I mix them with are my jeans and jackets.
yesss!! I'm so glad this resonated with you! xx
Your videos are very helpful thanks for sharing them
Where is your white button down from? Love it
Hi Alyessa. You explained this so perfectly, now it makes sense. Are you surviving in Montreal without shopping, ha ha??!!
I found this video really interesting, as I had never thought about the difference bewteen, until now they meant the same to me… but no more :)
I love your style but maybe I have four months to dress even close to that. It’s difficult to dress with style in Phoenix. 8 months of serious heat , would love to see how you would dress with style for triple digit weather.
