I believe the reason Gus was suspicious was because he knew someone was making a play after Jesse said the boy was poisoned. Gus has been on the cartels hit list for a so long that he has become very hypervigilant. Similar to how people with PTSD are triggered by certain cues, Gus gets a subconscious feeling that something isn't right. Our brains are great at picking up cues for self preservation , even when we don't know why we have these bad feelings.

...Or, there might not necessarily be anything subconscious about it; Jesse was being very passive-aggressive when he told Gus that Brock was poisoned, especially the way he said "no one knows how", almost like he was low-key accusing Gus of doing it right to his face. There's no way Gus didn't pick up on that, if he did in fact poison Brock he knows Jesse at the very least suspects him, and then all of a sudden this whole scenario of Jesse refusing to leave the hospital and forcing Gus to come and talk to him personally starts to feel like a ploy to draw him out. I mean, this is exactly the sort of paranoia you *need* to survive in the drug game for 20 years.

He also JUST poisoned like 50% of the cartel leadership at Don Eladio's party, so him being scared of assassination is reasonably justified.

Hank’s reason for NEVER being suspicious of Walt comes down to his hang ups on what makes a man a man. Hank definitely respects Walt’s intellect, but doesn’t see Walt as masculine enough to be a drug kingpin. Look at how Hank suffers when dealing with his PTSD and how he tries to hide it. When we are introduced to Hank in the first episode he just seems like a brash good old boy, but it’s so much deeper than that. Hank has a concept of what it means to be a man and he suffers a lot trying to live up to that ideal himself. It’s IMPOSSIBLE for him to suspect Walt. He can believe Walt could make money on gambling- is even impressed by that, but that mild-mannered, weak, afraid of holding a gun, completely not masculine Walt could be Heisenberg? Nope. It doesn’t cross his mind. Doesn’t come within shouting distance of crossing his mind.
I think he also considers Walt a good dude, and that plays a role, but not as much as Hank’s major character journey which examines the characteristics of masculinity.
And what I love is that it’s not ham handed. It’s subtle and the layers of Hank peel away over time from that initial impression he makes on the viewer. The themes are really pretty ahead of their time. You could see a character today hampered by trying to be a MAN and it probably wouldn’t be handled with as much finesse. But for the early 2000s to tackle it so deftly is just another in the long list of why this show is sooooo good.

You can say thing like how it's ahead of its time and how a show from the early 2000's can be so good, but honestly, we've regressed. Stuff that comes out now sucks. What do we have now that Breaking Bad didn't have? CGI graphics and 10x the budget with 1/4 the skill? I think you both do really well considering all of the details in the show. Some details are shown openly in the show, and others are quick, or you are left to put the detalts together yourself. I'm sure your viewers have already seen the show, and many have watched it more than once, so of course they know what's going on. Also, when Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul aired, there were SO many podcasts and social media sites to go to and hear/learn more about the episodes, and that's how many people got clarity about things they didn't understand when they watched it. As mentioned earlier, the mention of poison got Gus' attention. The last thing he wants at this point is for his location or movements to be known by anyone but his people. He realizes, after meeting with Jesse, that he was at the hospital as Jesse's request. Therefore Walt (or perhaps surviving cartel members?) might know where he is. He chooses therefore to make an unpredictable movement and abandons his car and presumably takes a cab instead.

I think Guss picked up on it because of context. It's actually brilliant writing.
I'll try not to spoil anything and therefore chose my words carefully.. but we'll never talk about this scene again but it's one of my favorite ones in the whole BBuniverse.
Guss understands people and their POV.
He understands Jesse really cares about kids
and he also understands that Jesse thinks Guss doesn't give a damn about kids.
Most importantly I guess though is Guss' understanding of Walter. He knows Walter is aware of all these things as well.
In the end it might just be the dialog with Jesse that seemed odd and the fact he was forced to get there personally in the first place.
He is a cautious man. It seemed like a perfect trap. It didn't have to be one. But why take your chances?

It is not as good as several things (Red Wedding, the best scenes across movies such as Shawshank and There Will Be Blood and David Lynch), but it might very well be the best moment of this entire series.
I guess if this series is your favorite thing ever, and it is top moment to you, then it is the best.

When Gus killed the cartel guys it wasn't Jessie's ricin cigarette it was Gus poisoning the tequila. The ricin cigarette was originally for Jessie to try to kill Gus. Jessie was hiding it in one of his cigarettes that he would transfer to a new cigarette pack each time he bought a new pack of cigarettes.

When Gus made the threat to kill Walt’s baby, that’s when I knew he did order those thugs to kill Tomas.
Even tho Walt is going off the deep end, he is right in wanting to kill Gus.

As the season comes to an end, everything gets more and more intense from Gus threading to kill Walt’s family to Jesse and Walt teaming up to kill Gus and especially with Brock in the hospital. This is my favorite season of the show. And the Crawlspace episode should have gotten Bryan Cranston his fourth Emmy, especially by the end where he screams and laughs from everything that’s lead up to that point, but since he won three in a row for the first three seasons, they wanted to give someone else a chance to win. Great reactions guys, I hope you’re doing well and will have a great weekend. Take care!

Gus got suspicious after Jesse said the boy was poisoned. Gus went from telling Jesse to work, to telling Jesse to stay. As Gus walked back to his car, he thought about who would poison the boy and why, and realized that he had been drawn out into the open.

I think he figured it out by reading Jesse’s mannerisms when he was telling him Brock was poisoned, since jesse didn’t kill Walter, he prolly figured that him and Walt had a convo and was plottin.

the truth is that it's just TV magic to make it more suspenseful. But my head canon is that gus realized he didn't leave anyone to watch the car, and the dude has seen far too much shit go down in the cartel

Thank you for making it easier to watch this masterpiece again with internet friends! The closest thing to BB/BCS’s level that I’ve watched since (other than older shows like The Wire) is Barry. Similar situation of a historically comedic actor (in this case Bill Hader) playing a deeply troubled violent anti-hero. Very, very well crafted show if you’re looking for something newer that even approaches this level.

So... Walter was just going to disappear himself and his family and only protect Hank by having Saul call the DEA to warn that there was a hit out on him? That would only potentially work for so long. Gus would have gotten the job done eventually, and Walter must have known that. So, if Walter was planning on leaving Hank high and dry anyway... then why go through the effort of disappearing his family? Gus said he wouldn't harm them if he left him, his operation, and Jesse alone. Walter could have just opted out, stayed put, and lived a normal life if he wasn't going to try to save Hank.

Man, I've been in a situation ONCE in my life where I was so stressed that I went from crying straight into hysterical laughter. When I found out my husband was cheating on me and I went to confront the other woman....only to realize he had lied about her name, too. I walked out of that workplace and just LOST IT, just like that. Momentary insanity to cope with the emotions.
