Malaska Golf // Fix Your Grip. Fix Your Flip. With Ashley Huizing, PGA

  • This is why so many golfers struggle. As an industry, we do a terrible job of teaching students how to hold the golf club. Once you understand how your hand and wrist joins align with your elbow and shoulder joints, your grip is neutral. This will make your impact stronger and all the compensations players' make to square the club face begin to go away.
Don't just play golf. Understand it.

When I started golf at the age of 16 years old, I hit it long and straight most of the time. Then I picked up a golf magazine and I went all to hell. By the time I was 18 years old, I was fighting a horrible slice and I was also hitting it much shorter. I then took up trying to rotate more and I got even worse. I just got used to being the worst one in our foursome and still had some fun but it was very frustrating. Then I took 4 years off from golf when I got busy at work. I went back to golf from scratch and started with this for my grip. I am now hitting a nice little draw with a lot less twisting and much, much further. Thanks, Mike. BTW, the grip and the Malaska move are the most transformative instruction I have ever seen and I have had more than a few lessons over the years. You are the best golf instructor by far.

Always gold Mike. Still amazes me how many golfers want to improve and pound thousands of balls, but don't any effort into the fundamentals or even entertain the cause and effect. Always appreciative of your "free" education allowing many of us to improve and enjoy the game even more than before.

The biggest problem I’ve found with taking tips from TH-cam is watching to many different teachers. There are many different swings. The best thing to do is find one and stick with them. Mike is a good one.

I had seen Mike's previous vid on letting the left hand take its natural hanging position on the club and adopted it. But I inadvertently put my right hand on with palm facing way too much up. Couldn't figure out why I was hitting all my irons straight...but right of target. Then it struck me 2 days ago while at the range. I put my right hand more like Mike instructed Ashley to do here.. and instant improvement. Somehow I missed that part in the video before. I'm glad to see this video reinforces my thinking. And I got to see Ashley😉

I fixed my grip to my neutral. I also watched your speed video. I have added over 30 yards on my drives that I have it well(I don't hit every one of them well).
Also added distance to other clubs. Not sure how much. I am 58 years old and honest to God I have hit about 6 drives over 300 yards. Absolutely amazing! Thank you.

Mike's a great teacher. Took a few lessons from him years ago in Utah. I teach as well and I can attest to his teachings on the grip. Very few players will be good at learning to "turn the wrist down" during the swing. Especially in the downswing. The result of that is almost all players will quit turning their lower body on the downswing and release the club early. That is the compensation for not having the face square. Griping the club in a "strong" position allows the average and above average golfer to be able to square the face even as they learn to turn more with the lower body and create lag and shaft lean at impact. Thanks Mike. Keep up the good work.

    • @dylanpatterson1085
      @dylanpatterson1085 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Funny you say lower body turn. My issue is the exact opposite, I fire my lower body and have a near perfect lower body impact position, but my upper body lags behind and I’m almost in a reverse C shape looking head on. Struggling trying to keep my hands forward and matching my upper and lower at impact and through impact

I knew it! Ever since I first picked up a club 20 years ago my instinct has been to grip that way and it’s been coached out of me to the point that I now have a flippy “neutral” grip. I’m going back to what feels right. I may have to learn not to flip again, but I think in the long run it’s for the best.
I love this non-conventional instruction based on natural movement and bio mechanics.

    • @Rich-ey7jv

Feel your pain! First thing I was taught, neutral grip. 10 years of crappy golf followed. Back to hammer time!

  • @josephwirtz8352
    @josephwirtz8352 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The “neutral” grip was considered orthodox in the 70s and 80s, and the “strong” grip was considered taboo. Because of this I now flip and wave the club at impact and NOTHING can help me make it consistent. As a youth in the 60s I assumed a strong grip that DID produce consistent results. Also, I’ve swung a lot of sledgehammers and always did so with a “strong” grip…I think I’ll be returning to the strong grip in golf…thanks Mike!

Absurd amount of knowledge and experience that you can learn. I finally understood how the pros hit. I'm hitting 145yrds PW with no efforts now. Combination of upper and lower body movements👉 With hands down and club head go out.

i went to a really expensive coach for two years.... i asked about my 2 knuckle grip right at the start... he said it was fine... i spent two years hitting 80pc great shots on his practice mat and 20pc good shots on the golf course.. because it is easier to time shots on the range or in practice because you hit ball after ball.. but on the course you don't have that luxury... Mike you have got me hitting effortless straight and strong shots in 2 days.. thanks so much

    Mike,
Thanks for this video. Last few years I’ve had a bad tendency to hit heel shots and shanks. I take lessons with a PGA pro and his advice has helped, but feeling exhausted with hitting shanks, after watching this video, I switched from a “neutral” grip to a strong grip and during warm up was striking the center of ALL my irons. I’m a 6.1 hcp and I shot a 76 with what I thought was just a so-so round for other reasons. Never have I ever had such a solid round of ball striking with the irons, and all my clubs for that matter! Thanks, you have renewed my golf game.

    • @Brandon_Balentine
      @Brandon_Balentine 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I know this comment is a year old, but I have to say I understand where you're coming from when you say you were "feeling exhausted with hitting shanks". I have worked myself to the point of being exhausted and defeated trying to fix shanks and could not figure it out. It's strange because I'll be hitting the ball very well. Then boom... out of nowhere I start shanking. I can literally hit 10/10 shanks sometimes. Then I have to start really manipulating in order to not shank. Tonight, while I was practicing, I reassessed my grip and went to a very strong grip. I was able to go back to all of the good stuff I had built into my swing without all of the manipulations. It feels like being set free!

When Mike takes her shaft below her right Hand and works the club at the 7:30 mark, my original Golf teacher did this exact thing in my 1st lesson with her, boy what a Nostalgic part of this lesson that was. This video really helped me. I have been battling my flip (early release) for a very long time. Thank you, Mike.

I tried a very strong lead-hand grip (4 knuckles) with the trail hand palm parallel to the club face. My flip disappeared immediately. My shots were pull draws. I hit several shots and straightened the pull/draw a bit, but not much. A medium strong (2.5 knuckle) lead-hand grip, again with the trail hand palm parallel to the club face, produced more gentle pull draws. I moved to a natural grip (2 knuckles) and made sure the trail hand palm was parallel to the club face. This put the trail hand a bit more on top of the grip than I’m used to. The flip was now back in play, but it was late enough that I still had shaft lean (the club released to about 5:00). That produced a slight pull and slight draw.
I had previously done the drill where I started with a closed club face, which was great for swinging without flipping. However, there is no release in that drill. For this drill, keeping the trail hand palm parallel to the club face gave me an opportunity to release the trail arm through the ball.
    I will keep practicing.
    Thanks again!

Just listen to Malaska. I finally understood golf watching Malaska videos 👉Hands down and club head out.
At transition, after weight on left side, the arms and upper body will move down a bit naturally as a single unit. That first movement will let your chest to be pointing more parallel to the ground. Then, you can bring the hands down and club head out. And do extend your right arm ( just enough for impact position) and that will be responsible for that solid contact effortlessly. As you are extending the right arm, you will take your left hip out of the way. That's it.

Really great Mike. So many instructors will tell you the flip is a result of early hinging and unhinging of the wrists when it’s really the rolling of the wrists. Then they make you hold your wrist angle to create “lag” and all you end up doing is lose power because you’ve taken all the speed out that’s in your hands.

Mike, I feel extremely guilty. Watching your videos are making golf so much simpler again (I used to play at a high level and had lost my way). This video specifically brought so many factors together, starting with the grip. When I had been just warming up, I could get great speed with the club. Put a ball down, no. Why? With my grip, I had to make compensations in order to hit the ball straightish. Guess what? Those compensations destroy speed, they have to. Once I fixed my grip, I don't have to worry about manually closing the face or anything else. It's so liberating. Anyway, about the guilt. I feel like I should just hand you a pile of money!

This was a very important video for me. I had to change my game from a square to square type of game to a more upright style of golf because of back issues. That meant a grip change and I thought it had to be a weaker grip. This tape changed my thinking and it also got my game back on track. I shot two par rounds in a row on my home course after changing my grip and then I shot 3 over. Thanks for the tip, Mike.

Mike is amazing and Ashley is quite charming with her laugh. I watched this last night, and this morning went to the practice greens, putting the left hand on the clubs as Mike showed and the right hand in the normal position. To my amazement, the ball direction was right on the aim direction (for a 20 yards chip) and the dispersion was tight. I had had problems with the ball directions, often slightly to the right. Mike's advises worked for me with my U and S wedges as well.
OUt of curiosity , I applied the left hand method to my putter. (left hand low and L hand now almost on the top of the putter grip). To my delight, my balls would go straight on the intended line, not as open as I had done them.
will see how I do tomorrow in my full round.

This is a very good technique for those of us who feel more of the arms in the swing than the lower body. Anyone who is more upper body orientated will feel a need to involve their hands/wrist in the backswing, this ends up causing a myriad of issues that usually result in opening the clubface, twisting, shanking, or coming OTT. For us upper body orientated players, the neutral grip enables us to do all that crap in our backswing. With the stronger grip it completely limits the amount the hands can twist in the backswing thus preventing those problems. It also promotes more body turn because you will feel a need to pull that left arm back to the ball and you will subconsciously use your lower body to do that. Sure you may pull it to the left a bit more but ill take a shot to the left over a bad shank any day.
I also think a stronger grip is much more better for thise who suffer from golfer/tennis elbow. There is less dynamic movement within the joints and lower chances of hitting straight down at the ground.

This video literally blew my mind! 🤯 I subscribed to a different golf instruction site that exactly teaches to wrist turn in transition to bow in order to compress the ball. I guess we begin to ask our selves, is the goal really a 200 yard 34 degree 7 iron. I struggle so much with that move because I am so afraid of injury. It will be a total change in mindset to NOT try to bow!

this explains why I’ve felt my left arm has been out of position through the strike forever 🤔🙌

Mike's description of why to grip the club this way is so compelling, based on actual physiology and the priority of face control, not "this is how we've always done it." One thing I had to do when changing to this grip is go from overlap to interlocking, FYI.
Interestingly, Paul Wilson has a video called "Strong is Wrong" as well as a follow up where he tries to explain how a strong grip is a "flaw" that must be compensated with another "flaw" in order to be successful. He says you would need to hit 300-500 balls a day to make it work right. It's a good example of the "industry not doing a good job" as Mike would put it.

Would have thought a naturally neutral grip (or strong in conventional teaching) would be perfect for Wilson’s Swing Machine Golf teachings as it involves passive arms/hands with a body driven rotation 🤷‍♂️

@@ocat1979 It won't accommodate Wilson's version of "loose wrists" or "hinge, rehinge" which is actually forearm rotation.

@@ocat1979 Paul has a philosophy of fast hip rotation and turning the arms off but he contradicts it when he talks about loose wrists hits the ball far.

After decades using the weak left hand that Mike describes using, resulting in inconsistency because of the difficulty rotating through the same way, I have been trying this. As Mike mentions, initially, the remnants of the old method creep in and my hands are trained to rotate. So, the occasional hook happens. But, gradually, the rotation is ebbing. But, I think it is to be expected that it takes time to consistently release in this new manner. I need more reps.
For some reason, one round this fall, the old rotation was gone and my shots were great. I had one snap hook off the tee, but that was it.
Mike's release yields more height for me and more distance, as well as consistency. My old rotation release also deleted the face. Too low.
Again, give yourself time to rid yourself of the old open and rotate method. I was a 1 handicap using it but it required a ton of practice hitting balls, and the hook always lurked.

Gosh! This man is a beast. Everything he talks about make sense 🤦🏻‍♂️. I “changed” my grip to line it up with elbow, shoulder etc, as he directs, and boy what a difference. I’m striking it more solidly than ever in my life, what a feeling. And to my amazement, when hitting into the wind... I hear, see and feel the ball piercing through the wind. 😧 some wizard 🧙‍♀️ stuff is going on with his teachings. 🤣😂. Thank you sir.

The way I look at it is like this... on a video I saw months ago, Jack Nicklaus’ son went to see him and asked him for advice on something, can’t remember exactly what it was, I think it was chipping. IF THE SON OF THE KING OF KINGS OF GOLF, GOES TO THIS MAN FOR ADVICE, what does that tell you about MM’s knowledge of the golf swing and who am I to question it or doubt him. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣🤣🤣🤣

About 30 years ago, I joined a driving range - went through the Ben Hogan book "Five Lessons" - and changed my grip to this, (stronger) grip. It took three weeks of hitting balls every day before I could "feel" normal with it, but I got to the point (like you teach) that I could get the club started, then swing as hard as I wanted, and end up with a slight draw.
I miss those days and realize that what I have done is fall back into a poor grip - leading with the back of my left hand.
I cannot wait to do this again!

Mike you should reach out to the barstool foreplay guys on TH-cam and give them all a lesson. It would be great content and learning experience for those guys.

Back of the left hand to the sky at impact? First Mike, thank you for all the great lessons you share with us. I've watched this video several times and still don't understand. Are you saying the best position for the back of left hand at impact is NOT facing the target but is pointed to the sky? Also, how do I determine my best wrist position without visiting you? Thanks again for everything!

The grip needs to allow for flexion and extension of the wrists, as well as radial and ulnar deviation. The grip that Mike put her in allows for extension of the left wrist, which then also allows flexion of the right wrist, throughout the swing and on to the finish. A correct finish has the hands high and left, extended left wrist and flexed right wrist. This gets the club face square to the swing arc through the swing, and at impact with the ball, without doing anything extra with the wrists, some kind of rig job to keep the ball in play. She has a fundamentally poor golf swing, which requires an incorrect golf grip and rigged forearm and wrist action to keep the ball in play, like most all amateurs.

Great video explaining both the what and why. Actually, seems to imply that many videos created on this topic in the past were just plain wrong.
