I was just wondering how much play testing you did on the game, realising that there must be close to ∞ combinations of choices. In other words: How did you try to make sure that the game didn't become unbalanced? Looks like a fun game!

@@TheisAnd Thanks! The whole design is based on clear trade-offs to ensure everything has an up and down side. There isn't any specific "score" or win/fail condition either, just different types of stories/endings, so we didn't have to worry about players reaching an unwinnable state. As for playtesting, quite a bit! We have also been actively listening to our community on discord and Steam forums and have made several post-release patches, adding new content and seriously re-balancing some things based on feedback =) I think the current state of the game is the best yet!
@@Serahpin Curious why you're pointing to Seattle specifically, it still works the same as anywhere else in the US? As for my own personal beliefs, I think it's a net-positive for society to have a safety net, especially with something that cannot always be controlled (like health). I had a pretty bad accident a few years back myself, and was lucky to be on insurance at the time. As for the game, though, we tried to offer a more balanced picture, looking at the rhetoric on both sides of the debate. So some characters will be pro-, some against it, and it's ultimately your choice. At the end of the day, we wanted the game to spark discussion on both sides. It's more a commentary on how media shapes our viewpoints, rather than just those viewpoints themselves.
Speaking for scientific literacy, "preliminary studies" is approximately a step up from scientific gossip and I'd argue not news, although in the real world they get reported on all the time leading to confusion and ambiguity about scientific results. PEER REVIEWED STUDIES are the thing you're looking for. While not fact (and should not be reported as such), they are solid evidence.

Yep, saw that too. I read the article snippet and when Jon said there was a study I had to reread it to find what he was talking about, my brain glosses over "preliminary study" in a similar way it does the phrase "sponsored content" xD
YES and in fact almost useless unless supported over And over by high quality studies regardless of peer review or not
Also I think the article author may play a part in this game's factual reporting eg genetic specialist Vs concerned activist or whatever

The point about an Assassin is he doesn't usually give you time to talk and prepare.

I like how Jon seems incapable of telling how people are going to interpret news, despite much of it being blindly obvious. You mean constantly talking positively about an alcoholic drink in the news is going to make people drink more? You mean you can tell the truth but come at it from different perspectives? Amazing!

OMG Imagine a strategy style game where you make headlines and those headlines effect how your troops move. Like you are a war reporter and you are in charge of creating headlines or articles relating to a war, so as you produce headlines and choose different ones you change the public's opinion on the war and can end up improving tech or causing politicians to double down or pull out based on public outcry.
And a few times where you need to be careful because the headline you have the option of publishing contains information that the enemy can use. Maybe at a few points you're requested to publish factually wrong headlines to feint the enemy and need to decide whether to lie for the good of the war or just neglect to mention anything about troop positions that week.
I've heard that this game has like multiple endings and stuff, you should play some more of it.
This kind of game, I like it.

I think it's mainly because it's a "No shit, Sherlock" kind of fact given how obvious the cameras are.

The Healthcare article was talking about breakthroughs, and it is true that private systems are much better in those terms. Most of our progress comes from the US.

There's multiple different endings for each of the characters you encounter, as well as your own job and the fate of the city! There's also some... interesting things you might see if you play it a 2nd or 3rd time ;)

I felt pain when he approved the article about crime that was written by a Gene science dude and not a reputable source one the subject such as a crime analyzer or something. That article was opinion, not fact jon.

To be fair, the so called "Clearheaded Editor" is, in my experience, the most biased editor in the game. So i wouldn't put much stock in who wrote it, but rather what was written.

Hey Jon this game is awesome I saw you play it and went a brought it. I found out there are loads of different paths to take and I found that when the game ended because I got fried I started a new game and most of the dialogue was different as though your last play through had happened sort of thing. There are also different articles. And I unlocked a police lady and can play as her.

Jon, the point is the headlines and summaries. That blurb is supposed to be a summary of the article, not the full article. Evidence is supposed to be something for the article. The point isn't actual news, it's public perception.

11:51 that would be because of government actually. There are many artificial monopolies in medicine, such as the one on insulin, because of a reoccuring granting of patents to a company for minor improvements on the drug. This keeps the monopoly in place and avoids the creation of generic substitute goods which would drive down the price while forcing all companies in that sub-industry to improve their drug. So the article was still correct

Day 1 - Rejects a ''story' which is blatantly an advert. Day 2 - Accepts a story which is a very thinly veiled advert. His journalists are stepping up their game. I wonder how much of a back-hander they gain for getting an "advert article" printed.

I love these Orwellian titles, I have so many in my collection but I never get around to play them ^^;
EDIT: As expected really, Jon did not tag the ones that really made things "interesting". I think it is worth him seeing that part of the game though. If you stream this, Jon, be less "thoughtful" with the choices and pick the ones that sound "good". It doesn't *always* lead to really bad outcomes....
Yeah, I've watched GrayStillPlays runs on this game. While he intentionally tries to push the limits, I'd love to see how/if things spiral out of control for Jon's run!

If Editorial Em'Up is the genre du jour you should try Republia Times. I recall it to be from the developer of Papers Please. A fun, if very short game.

FYI the WHO rankings are based on subjective measurements, not objective. People may feel better about their system, bit when you look at actual outcomes, they are equal to or worse than other systems. Also, healthcare systems that are primarily private do produce more beneficial medical research and help reduce costs. Government run healthcare is just subsidized and not necessarily actually lower in overall costs.

You know, an interesting variation of this type of game could be spin doctor. Where you have to factually report the news, but you choose how to phrase and report it to support a specific stance/agenda.

I live in the EU, land of the wonderful free socialised healthcare and... It sucks the sweat from the back of monkey sack.
I still have to pay for it, or they jail me, but when I want real health care I have to pay a private insurance, which is worth it.
Forcing me to pay for something that doesn't work and I don't use is asinine, I DON'T want, I'm being forced to, should tell you all you need to know about socialised healthcare.
