Oh and I use the food grade one in water as a detox,so at least I’ll have some on hand should I need it.

I’ve heard a few pet channels are dealing with rat mites. It’s also rampaging through the uk too, I d not heard of them till recently when they seemed to pop up everywhere.

so interesting! I had some friends in LA dealing with them, then a bit later I noticed them popping up in some of the more local facebook groups I'm a part of. I wonder if this is a new thing or I'm just newish to hamstering?

@@RachelGotHamsters I only discovered them last week on my hamster and 2 gerbils.. I had been getting bites for 2 months though. The bites started soon after I took on the hamster who was a rescue so I think he may have brought them in... I'm thinking about moving them all into another room and using one of those pesticide foggers- did you try those? Am also sprinkling DE everywhere and treating the animals with ivermectin which you can buy over the counter in the uk thankfully..

@@livv2802 oh wow 2 months! Hmm yes I suppose it was a few weeks of bites for me too before I figured it out. I didn’t try a fogger, but I did have my home treated for bugs. It was actually a whole thing bc they believe the source was mice in my attic. So I replaced the insulation with something mice don’t like, sealed some holes in the roof to keep them out, and now I have the pest control come every two months. The stuff they use isn’t toxic to mammals so it’s not an issue, they just put it along the corners of the rooms, windows, and light fixtures.

@@RachelGotHamsters there has also been a problem with mice in my building and I have a big crack/hole in my bathroom ceiling (landlord seems to have no interest in repairing it) that also happened at the same time I started getting the bites so I guess that is a possibility too for how they got to mine... after reading your comment I went and covered it with loads of tape! Do you have any idea which substance pest control are using inside your apartment?
