Thanks for this comparison! There is a clear difference(especially in the low frequencies) and I prefer the Tascam since the low frequencies are more forward giving me the impression of "warmth". While the Zoom XY sounds quite good, it gives me the impression of harshness since the upper mid frequencies are a bit more forward... I have the H6 and it has the same problem, especially when recording a source that sits dominantly in that frequency range.. generally have to use a dynamic eq in post to fix that.

Tanks for this comparison ! Really well done. X8 sound 10x better, the H8 do not have more details but just a lot of coloration, especialy in the high. But I'm stunned by all the comment saying they are not hearing anything... Here is why the internet can be you best ennemy. Thanks again for this video !
The whole point here is, if you are fretting over which is better, they are both almost identical, stop fretting, they are both good. I don't know why external microphones matter, the noise floor should be nearly identical between both devices, the only major difference should be the internal capsules, and in this case, the Zoom H8 has a slightly wider stereo image with slightly less muted highs, while the Tascam has a slightly more narrow stereo image with slightly muted highs and slightly better low end response. Both units sound identical when using only external microphones. The Zoom H8, under technical specs, is slightly more noisy than the Tascam, however, this is only on paper, properly configured, this should not be noticeable. If you don't know how to set levels, or, perhaps will be dealing with HUGE dynamic ranges, the Tascam offers 32-bit float recording (which is only good for post processing), giving you the ability to be more flexible with gain settings. I use both devices with an Avantree Bluetooth audio transmission setup for live recordings (the Zoom H8 for a live concert grand piano and the Tascam for room ambiance about 12 feet away from the piano using the built-in capsules) and they perform fantastically. Plugged in to the Tascam is a Shure 58 beta microphone for vocals and two Shure 57's for capturing an even wider sound stage from the piano (the Shure 57's are plugged into the Zoom H8).
The width of the stereo image is dependent on the setting of the X-Y / A-B mics or the connected mic locations. I didn't hear a wider stage on the Zoom H8 using the X-Y included mics. The Tascam did record a greater dynamic level of sound, particularly in the lower end. I have used both devices also, I returned the Zoom H8 because it was buggy, and its interface was difficult to use. The H8 would intermittently not start recording when I pushed the record button twice, and because its screen is not visible when I record, this was VERY frustrating. The Tascam X8 has been fantastic so far, it is head and shoulders above the H8 I would like your recommendation for microphones. I write original songs on guitar and I want to record my guitar separately from vocals. Most expert opinions I have reviewed recommend two mics for the guitar and one for vocals. What mics would you recommend for studio recording? For vocals, do you recommend a dynamic mic? Thanks!
I could not tell any discernable difference except with the built-in X-Y mics. In that case I think the Tascam was better. Even the mixed was so close, I could not say one was better than the other. What is striking is that the X-Y mic recordings for both recorders sound better than the C414 separate mic recordings. The X-Y mic provide a clearly superior sound. This is remarkable.
@ Hmmm, that's a pretty arrogant statement. Do you even own one of these recorders? I own both of them, but I returned the Zoom H8 because it was buggy. I also am recording my original songs and I am using the Shure SM58 and Rode NT1 for separate vocals and instrument mics. The Tascam records the X-Y mics, and each separate mic on in dividual tracks. So it is VERY easy to listen to each track and compare the sound quality of each mic system. The included X-Y mics on both the Zoom H8 and the Tascam X8 provide super audio quality that easily compares to the separate mics. The Rode NT1 does provide better audio quality overall, but the Tascam X-Y mics produce stunningly beautiful and full sound. Don't talk about things that you are stupidly ignorant about.

@@franklong6269 Cool life but idc. I said this because of the pre-amp sound, not mic one.
I;m surpriesd how much difference is between the 2 devices. Even the preamps. I like the sound of the X8 more but it seems the H8 have more fine-details.
It sounds pretty close, the major difference is only with the XY capsules. I guess the difference would be more obvious when working with the actual WAV files. Noise floor, recovering details from -12db recording, etc.
Thank you for this test, the difference is quite obvious, Tascam has much richer and proper sound then Zoom. I used good open back headphones and you can really hear the difference.
Hello. Thanks for the tutorial you published. I have a question: The H8 zoom has a mixer with effects like Daily, Repeat and Reverb. Does the TASCAM Portacapture X8 have a mixer or not?
I can find EQ\REVERB\Compressor etc. in the recording input settings. But I cant try them now because my X8 is returned to the factory for the noise problem.
Depending on which app you use, Tascam supplies a lot of the most popular sound effects, like reverb for the music app. There is a mixer for each app and for the manual mode on the Tascam X8. There are also faders. There is a "noise limiting" function for podcasts which limits noise when a person is not speaking. There is a compressor. There is a max gain function. You can use faders for each app and in manual. The unit also records an automatic mix of all channels for you as well as separate recordings for each mic. You can set the levels of the mixed channel recordings to your preference. This is really a great recorder for both beginners and pros.
The only convenience of the h8 are the mic capsules, but the app being iOs only, and it not having 192khz or USB-C is just ludicrous. Its really just a bigger h6 with a fancy screen. Not worth the upgrade. Tascam x8 wins by a mile.

They're both great portable recorders, so in the end...we all win.

DOBRY TEST - DZIĘKI!
Good video apart from when you recorded the X8 with the pair of DPA 4099P's you recorded them in mono but stereo with the H8.
sound pretty close but tascam x8 sounds a little better
I like the timbre of H8, sounds natural.
is it the same mic for both devices? it seems like the stereo images have a great difference
Yes, all the mics are in the same setup and location. The piano piece is played by autoplay system and it should be more consistent than a human play.
At least one of the recordings is mono, probably wrong settings.
@@ДаниилКириллов yes, the two recordings using tascam with external mic are likely recorded in mono
Did you use 90 or 120 degree setting on XY capsule on H8?
90setting, same as tascam X8
H8 sound more detailed. Thanks for the review bro

Tascam X8 for the win!!
ZOOM H8

Nagyon jól hallhatóak a külömbségek persze lehet, hogy azoktól az eszközöktől is függ amin halgatja az ember. Engem meggyőzött Tascam X8 a befutó.
Zooms over-hyped( very tiny sound) high frequency vs the Tascams natural worm and smooth sound.I will give this one to the Tascam as the best
Wow!!!
I preferred the H8 more of a neutral sound in my opinion.
feels like zoom has bit sharper sound tascam has bit softer sound in my view

Waaaait a second)) From 1:35 obviously in mono, and than from 1:42 stereo again;) etc
But anyway thanks for this test!
Can't you compare it with an acoustic guitar?? :)
Sorry buddy i cant play a guitar, but i will try to do so later with my friend
@@mobilestudio7387 thank you for the reply :)
Thanks
oh, c'mon, something went extremely wrong, there is no way the same mics would sound so much different, you need to check polarity))
The sounds was similar when i use a external preamp, so i guess the internal preamp are quite different.
