- It's Wednesday, which now means a new video! There are more couples on The Next Step, but I didn't make the original tier list, so here I am, ranking a selection of ships! I seemed to dislike more couples than I thought...

Emily and Hunter were probably the least un-problematic couple on the show and because they had development and they were actually really good together and i was actually so sad when they never got together

I seriously have been hoping since Emily has been Studio Head that she brings in Hunter for the choreographer, or to kind of replace Michelle especially since Michelle & Hunter were good friends and they do have similarities...
I would put jiley in legends even after season 4. Although season 4 broke me and made me hate riley, I still liked jiley as a couple. Even when they weren't together, they had a connection. I just wish it wasn't dragged out so much, but I did like seeing problems in relationships, cos when you come out the end of it, you either break or become stronger. They came out stronger. I also love their relationship, they look good together.
Personally I loved James and Riley and Emily and Hunter was definitely one of the best

Once again, another great set of analyses - well done! For me, TNS, has a great habit of having the right couples together but often for the wrong reasons or to suit the plot of the week, the slow burners that were unexpected like Emily and Hunter were more rewarding for that reason and definitely more than painful when they fell apart. This is true to a lesser extent with friendships that are formed and alliances that are flimsier than some of the more recent plots.
P.S more mockingariana has proven that some good has come out of the crisis! :D

I’d put Noah and richelle in legends! They’ve been together since the start and have such a strong bond, the times they’ve shared and achievements they’ve made in my opinion makes them a good couple. Even though they’ve had ups and downs they know each other deep down, they are just meant to be 🥰

I LOVED Emily and Hunter’s dynamic, and I wish they would’ve had scenes where they talked to each other about the Amanda situation, apologised and rekindled their relationship , it would’ve made the win against Amanda that much better

@Halima Tazi It's your opinion but I don't like that they were trying to get Michelle and Eldon to break up. Also, I don't like Hunter so that made it hard for me to love them. However I liked them when they were together and I was very sad when they broke up.

I personally think Nomanda is a legendary couple who had a load of cute scenes. I agree that it was random but they were unproblematic and I don't think they should of broke up..

i feel like most people ship nochelle mainly because myles and briar are together irl, personally i think their characters see eachother as brother and sister
James and Beth were that "my red socks are in the wash so I'll wear my yellow ones" relationship for James, meaning that Beth was just like a pair of socks to him, to keep his feet warm because his red socks weren't available, not that he particularly wanted the yellow socks. Whereas for Beth, James was all the world to her. That made her really dangerous. She was after his gonads long before she ever kissed him and she didn't care that he was in a relationship. If they were going to do a back story for Glenn Close's character Alex from the film "Fatal attraction," it would be Beth in seasons 1 and 2 ! As a couple they had about as much chemistry as a bicycle and an aeroplane.
But when it came down to it, Beth is possibly the only character in TNS history to actually demonstrate real love, real sacrificial love that holds the good of the object of one's desire as more important than anything else, even if it conflicts with what one desperately wants. "I love you ~ but you love Riley" and her conclusion of only wanting James' happiness, even if she was not part of it ~ that's love and that says it all.

I thought Noah and Amanda were possibly TNS's cringiest couple. Neither of them played that well and it was never believable until right near the end of s4 where Noah said he'd support Amanda whatever decision she made. It's interesting for me that that's where the Noah character started to actually become a good part of the cast. Prior to that I thought he was Dr Meh.
Although Amanda seemed to get uncharacteristically soft and tender given her evils of s1 & 2 and her bitterness in s3, I have seen tough girls crumble to mush when a guy is on her radar so I thought that part was quite realistic. But as a couple I find watching clouds go by more entertaining than those two.
By the time Noah was dating Jacquie, he was sort of in that "I'm ready to forget Amanda who I just told I loved !" mode. I actually liked the tensions of their coupledom. I thought they both played it well but it brought home for me the greatest weakness of the majority of TNS ships {Sloane/LaTroy and Jiley excluded} ~ they didn't hang together outside of the studio ! They were like primary school relationships where you only see your beloved at school so everything about the relationship is in the context of that place and there's no chance to breathe and grow. Outside of school things {or in their case, dance things} they had nothing. So their last scene together kind of rang a little hollow for me. I couldn't help thinking of Jacquie "what are you crying about ? You've hardly chosen to get to know Noah outside TNS, even with the heads up of him being 18 and likely having to leave !!"
In a nutshell, that's why Emilest/Westily {? Wemily ?} was doomed to failure and that's even the underlying reason that Emily gave. I thought it was good writing though because it's what spurred West on to get out of his locale and think about travelling the world {remember, he wanted to go to Sweden before Miss Kate said Amanda _had_ to go} and what took Emily away from only thinking about dance and thinking about university. Theirs is a match made in a mysterious Heaven; they were such opposites that they could have been the most inspiring couple or they could have turned out to be so mismatched that they'd make Amy and LaTroy look like a beautiful tall and verdant tree in a lush forest.

I've been quarantined for 3 days now, I'm okay. Was very stressed initially because I now don't have work, so my income isn't going to be great, but I'm trying to be positive and treat this as a good excuse to learn new skills and do more TH-cam 😊

oh boy here we go. jiley is legendary idc what you say. don’t think i even need to argue on that one. noamanda was the sweetest thing ever because they were cringey but they were cringey together because they were just able to be themselves. pinn will always be legendary in my eyes, they are literally jiley dopplegangers. and as for ty, i watched season 6 before i even realized there was an entire other 5 seasons before it, and i remember LOVING ty and amy (i think henry is better now, but ty will always have a place in my heart.) but chances are i prob just had a crush on him 😅. i cannot believe you even considered liking james and beth, beth was the most obnoxious girl in the entire series. don’t get me started. and finally, EMILY AND WEST. I will ALWAYS love emily and west. u lost all my respect with that one i’m sorry 😭 they would have made the BEST couple ever.

Riley and James most iconic, No 1 and long lasting couple on entire show.. And no matter what they may come across they overcome it.. Their duets also the best duets ever.
Honestly, I think Lily and Kingston would've made a cute couple if they didn't fight every single second. They're toxic to each other but they are really cute, you gotta admit. I just wish the producers & directors would make them more nice to each other.
In a way, it could be argued that TNS has dealt with couples and "romance" really poorly throughout its 7 seasons. It portrays teenagers as fickle and easily swayed by the first emotional stirring they feel........
But in reality, every one of the romances or budding romances or even potential romances has been steeped in the reality of what it is like to be an emerging person, a youngster that is in that limbo land of no longer being a child, yet not an adult. It's that space between anything, something or nothing in which any situation could go in a myriad of directions and the dancers at a dance troupe are hardly going to be veterans with worldly experience in the heady world of relationships !
Personally, I think every single relationship portrayed has been nothing I'd recommend actually building something lasting on ! It's more correct to say that there have been lovely heartwarming _moments_ rather than relationships themselves.
I think jiley has to be my fave I love them lmao and Thalia and Eldon. Ok even tho it came out like 3 months ago I still can’t find the Christmas ep anywhere I can watch it

Maybe you could do a video on the timeline of the Next Step as there are so many inaccuracies. Like for example it is canon that every dance season (Regionals, Nationals, Internationals) is 4 months which would make no sense as that would mean as Noah turns 18 in Season 6 he would have been 15-16 in Seasons 1-3. There are other problems like Riley being a minor and it being illegal for her to be studio head, Emily going to business school for a very short period even though she would be about 18.

I think you should do a video where you look into the ages of the characters. I was about to comment saying I didn’t like the age gap between Noah and Amanda (in real life I know they are the same age, but on the show there’s a gap) before s1 Amanda won regionals 3 times, which takes atleast 3 years. However Noah was 18 in s6, meaning he was only 17 in s4 (which also made him 15/16 in s1 despite myles being 13 without even hitting puberty). So it is a possibility that on the show they were the same age, however it still didn’t feel right considering Noah was on a kids dance troup while Amanda was winning regionals, as the dance captain of a studio.

Well, what can one say about Jiley ? Probably TNS' much vaunted and classic contribution to the romance stakes of teen television, beloved the world over and thought of as almost beyond legendary.
I think they represent the worst in teenage relationships and should be a salutary example of why one shouldn't be in any great rush to think a boyfriend or girlfriend is the be-all and end-all of their life at that point. Easier said than done, but to be noted anyway.
They are a cautionary tale, indeed, a crowning example of immaturity and how sometimes, growth, real meaningful growth, comes through pain and our own stupidity yet didn't necessarily have to.
The interesting thing for me about Jiley is that they were a much stronger, friendlier, well matched and tender duo _before_ they actually became an item ! After that, it was one poison dish after another ~ Beth turning up to Regionals and Riley getting all uptight at James' laid backness in s1, the Beth duet, the kiss, the trying to find a boyfriend and those stupid tests in s2, Ella and the band in s3 and the Bangers and mash up absence combined with {or which led to} Alfie in s4. I know the course of true love rarely runs smooth but this was ridiculous ! And while it's true that coming through heavy times really can strengthen a relationship, that's usually when you're much older, not when you're a teenager still trying to work out where you want to go in life.
I'd say to pretty much anyone that if your 'ship looks like Jiley did for most of its existence ~ get out of it quick before you become Amy !

Unfortunately it seems like Brittany and Trevor fell out in real life sometime last year, they no longer follow each other on social media and deleted all photos together :/

Many people speak of matches made in Heaven. I don't believe any are but if they were, that of Emily and Hunter was definitely made some place else ! He, the delusional stalker that wanted to break up a relationship to get back with someone he'd never been with in the first place, she, the vengeful, controlling and equally delusional harridan that saw herself as the true matriarch of TNS that wanted to break up a relationship to get back a guy that clearly no longer wanted to be with her...........what a foundation !
Many {myself included} have asked why, when Amanda was finally outed, Emily didn't explain to Hunter why she'd dumped him and then both of them resume where they had left off. I think the answer lies very much in Emily and the way she viewed people ~ as disposable, to be picked up one minute and dumped the next when they no longer served her will and whim. She'd done it with Giselle, she'd done it with Riley, she'd done it with Stephanie to an extent, she'd done it with Chloe and she'd later do it with West.....
She was merely being true to form with Hunter !
It's also noticeable that Hunter only started getting real ideas about Emily _after_ he'd been on a date with Michelle and she'd talked incessantly about Eldon. It kind of makes one wonder where his head would have been if their date had gone well and it certainly causes one to consider a little more deeply just where Hunter was really at. On the one hand, he said all he could think of on his date was Emily {but he still went on the date}. On the other, he was irritated that all Michelle talked about was Eldon {and wasn't engaging with him, which he clearly wanted her to be doing}. So at what point did he no longer want to pursue Michelle and at what point did Emily actually become an object of his desire and why ? Pretty much everything about their time together was built on ground too shallow to sustain any great weight. When he left TNS, they didn't even say 'bye' !
I can't work out if they were the victims of really poor writing or if the writing involving them was actually brilliant and incisive. I could make a case for both and either but whichever way I went, theirs was a relationship that accurately mirrors the current state of western civilization ! 😂
i really loved Richelle and Ozzy in season 6 and how Ozzy comforted her but in season seven richelle was obsessed with her ego and not even sad about elliot anymore and i think they should of showed more in season seven of what happened between them with the comforting scene
Did anyone know that Daniel and Charlie where supposed to date in season 2 but it never happened? I just found that out recently :D
If I was tasked with coming up with a title to describe Emily and Eldon's tryst, it would be "Wanting, getting, having, disposing...."
It was TNS' first ship and it laid down {at least from Eldon's direction} an important marker that followed the majority that trailed in its wake but which also doomed that majority to death before they ever got going, namely, the dance studio was their world, their universe....and the wider world seemed to not exist. It's like the couples had absolutely no ground to stand on outside of The Next Step ~ not a great basis for even a teenage relationship ! If two people get together at school or at work or their club or whatever, the worst thing for that relationship is to be lived out in that place and not away from that place.

Another important marker laid down was that of Eldon's immaturity which dogged him throughout the six seasons he was featured in the show. His was the classic wanting something for so long and so badly until he got it. And that's when one realizes just how shallow he was, how he didn't really view Emily as a person of some worth, but rather, a trophy worth pursuing until it was in his cabinet, at which point he discovered that the fantasies he'd built up in his head over the 5 years weren't the same as actually having to engage with a real human being that didn't follow his imaginary script. Although it's one of the funniest Eldon moments for me in s1, it's also one of the most damning of him; that scene at Regionals when Amanda piles on Emily and someone tells him to go and comfort her and he says that he'd actually forgotten that he was her boyfriend. I know that he'd by that time decided that he wanted to end it with Emily but the point is that at that time, he hadn't ended it, yet he couldn't see how badly she was hurting after Amanda's tirade. It's one of the best encapsulations of selfishness you're ever likely to see.
Mind you, it's hard to have too much sympathy for Emily because rather like Thalia in s3 and beyond, she tended to see Eldon as a pet on a lead to be controlled at will and led wherever _she_ wanted to go. She had constantly rejected him {she was smart to do so !} and one suspects that the only reason she began to give him the time of day was because she suspected Michelle had him in her sights. That's the thing with Emily, she's always shown she has really good insight into people and situations but rather than utilize it for the benefit of those people, she uses it as a control mechanism, to try to wield power over them and get her own way and just never seemed to recognize that her way was doomed to fail because it kept blowing up in her face. No character in TNS has been more blindly self destructive than Emily. It was interesting in s1 that Riley saw that so clearly.
To be fair to her, even if her motives for being with Eldon were suspect initially {let's face it, it was a combo of wanting information on a suspected mutiny and being caught in a vulnerable place after "Sabotage"} she saw their relationship as being distinct from TNS. She told him so when she went to audition for Elite and she'd arrange to meet up with him outside of dance. But Eldon seemed really insecure about having to deal with a real life Emily in a real world and it exposed where his head was at. Not a pretty place.
In the end though, they made for a horrible couple. They were both in it for the wrong reasons and Eldon was not the kind of guy any girl with sense would want to open up to expecting considered, mature support of any kind. I couldn't even see those two growing old disgracefully ! 😂

Back in the 1960s there was an article in some paper with a very famous headline "Would you let your daughter marry a Rolling Stone ?" that was dreamed up by the Stones' manager Andrew Loog Oldham, to capitalize on the Stones' bad boy image. That question could well be asked of a series of imaginary Canadian dads about Eldon.
Eldon possibly above and beyond any character on TNS exhibits the worst that can be found in dating. He demonstrated virtually zero understanding of another human being beyond his desire to own them and be seen with them and ironically, in Emily and Thalia ended up meeting his match but not in a way that he suffered ~ which was unfortunate because he enabled the worst in them and in my opinion, deserved that worst !
In a way, he's priceless. His performances in the romance stakes of seasons 1-4 are what I'd play to any boy with the advice "this is not the way to be with someone that you think you have feelings towards !" If my sons ended up being an Eldon, I don't know which would come first, me in despair or some dads seeking to get their hands on their necks !!
Considering that until s7 {at this point 20 episodes in, it has been an unqualified disaster in need of the kind of miracle only God and Jesus 🙌 deal in to save it !} I've always seen s3 as the worst season of TNS, it's kind of ironic that it is s3 that contains perhaps the deepest and most penetrating piece of observational wisdom I can ever remember in the show, in which James says to Eldon that it's not so much that girls fall for him as such, but rather, they fall for his dancing. While I'm not so sure that applied to Michelle {she did, after all, put him on the back row ~ a move that all the dancers and Miss Kate and Chris were against or at the least had grave reservations about and also, she used dance as a means to connect with him}, it certainly gave him a gravitas with Emily and Thalia and blinded Miss Kate to his personal shortcomings; kind of like a peacock feather effect. Because as an actual person he was _for the birds !_
And that's what has long given me the chills about his relationship with Thalia. I've never felt the writers of the show did Thalia justice as a character in TNS. She brought nothing and departed with nothing and as a dancer was almost anonymous or to put it another way, she never did anything unique that one of her teammates couldn't do, never brought something to the table that no one one else could bring. Giselle was similarly poorly utilized but she was a fantastic dancer and most of her dances are memorable to me and are full of 'wow' moments. I still gasp when I think of some of her moves. The few fleeting occasions Thalia had any central part, it's almost like they rushed through them so quickly, like they just had to get them out of the way and as such her scenes are so unsatisfactory.
But they missed a trick with her by not exploring the one thing thing she brought to the party that could have made for some great scenes and drama ~ her controlling disposition. Thalia was a control freak on the sly. It doesn't come out much {because she was poorly realized} but when it does, it's chiiling. In s3, she has a conversation with Michelle in which she learns that her and Eldon aren't interested in reconnecting and Michelle finishes their chat by saying something like "You do know he's a real dufus ?" to which Thalia replies "Yes, that's what I like about him."
Cue: alarm bells ringing loudly !!
She saw Eldon as someone that basically she could control because he was too dumb to be of any challenge to her in whatever she wanted to do and I think that was really scary. Even more scary was that he enjoyed being over-mothered like that. That might sound kind of harsh but the strength of their relationship {and its foundation} can be seen in the way she just upped and left Canada to go to Poland to explore her heritage. Nothing wrong in that ~ but Eldon seems to have been in the dark about the details surrounding it all and spent so much time in a funk thinking that she was off with Bartek the dancer. That said a lot. Like so many TNS relationships, the viewer was often left thinking "do these people ever actually talk to each other, outside the studio about things other than dance, like....life ?"
Subsequent seasons saw Eldon coming across more like Thalia's pet than someone she was in a committed relationship with so when I look at those two, well, I have no sympathy for Eldon and Thalia is almost Alfie-like in the way she comes across as so nice on the surface but underlying it all, a dictator. A benevolent one perhaps, but a controlling one nonetheless.
They'll probably be very happy together ! 😂

James + Riley are legendary because no matter what they pull there relationship back in to place and love each other no matter what so think about that before you mess with the longest lasting relationships in the next step

Also, Emily and hunter needed to get back together, I dont understand why the writers would ruin such a good relationship. They were so cute and had great chemistry.
