that makes me think that there’s definitely some sort of or a few external beings running this world, what human would think “ahhh let’s create a bomb that could wipe the whole earth!”and keep it going for generations to come. These people have to be completely deranged/psychotic or we are DNA planted by Aliens who are using the world and human civilisation as a test project. We could be in the world where they’ve tried to run a planet, kinda failed and we just keep getting reset.

Here is the thing. I have been hearing about MAD since I was a child in the early 1970s. Back then we regularly had "duck and cover" drills. The saying was "If you see the flash, duck and cover". Looking back, that was absurd, if you see a flash, you are dead. Since I live in California, we had the same drill for earthquakes. Every Pentecostal church back then used MAD to preach about the prophecies of Revelation. Why would you terrify kids by preaching that in Sunday school? Yet, that went on every Sunday. People built bomb shelters. A big selling point in the early 1970s was a Civil Defense approved home. Alot of bigger buildings in the city advertised their fallout shelters.
By the time I was a teenager in the late 1970s and early 1980s people were fed up with the saber rattling bulls*** if it happens, there is little anyone can do. But life must go on in the meantime. People stopped talking about it. Churches stopped preaching about MAD. Homeowners stopped maintaining their bomb shelters. In fact, my buddy Mike turned his family's bomb shelter into a party den. We used to sit in there and smoke weed while listening to Led Zeppelin on 8 track.
At 57 years old I am still in the same mindset, I have a life to live. If a nuclear strike ends my life, its been a wonderful 57 years. We never talked about nuclear war to our daughters and we never mention it to our grandkids.
Your life needs to go on to. Every minute you consider a nuclear attack is a minute you could have been reading something inspirational. While I was typing this I was listening to Pink Floyd's Division Bell. I love music

Growing up in the 90's, nuclear war was something we hardly heard about at all as kids. When the Berlin wall came down the Cold War was over, and with it any serious threat of nuclear war. Nuclear superpowers started actually reducing their stockpiles. Sure, there were occasional concerns of rogue nations getting their hands on nukes, but overall, it seemed like the chances of a major nuclear war ever happening were basically nil.
It was surreal to me when the invasion of Ukraine happened and suddenly the news started talking about the return of the Cold War and even the possibility of WW3. I got pretty stressed, but ultimately I came to the same conclusion as you: we have to live our lives and not be ruled by our fear.

@@philw3039 Absolutely. Something that is seldom mentioned is Russia’s citizens also living in fear of nuclear annihilation. The truest danger in this is not the means or ways: the truest danger is in the why...if your enemy thinks he can 'get away' with an attack now, but might not later, he may choose to risk everything on a momentary window of opportunity.
Meanwhile, if he feels that his peer is too frightened...or just unable...he may push the boundaries of threat further to allow actions that normally would be too risky.

My guess is that as soon as Ukraine pushes towards Crimea it will all happen. Even if it doesn't lead to mutually assuree destruction, it will lead to at the least the loss of tens of thousands of military personell or hundreds of thousands/few million civillians. This is tragic enough to the point where russians will suffer a greater punishment than germans did after ww2. There will be no forgiveness and no reconciliation possible for decades. And maybe never by the nations that suffer the most casualties.

I have been learning about the Cold War for my examinations and one of the key concepts we needed to know was MAD. It's interesting because there are two sides to the argument for having nuclear weapons. One is that nuclear weapons can lead to mass destruction as seen in Japan due to Fat Man and Little Boy atomic bombs released by the US. However, the other side of the argument is that having nuclear weapons is a deterrent if two nations have nuclear weapons and go to war, it would lead to MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) as both nations would receive significant damage despite the outcome of the war. This was one of the main reasons why the USA and the USSR did not want to have a direct war with each other and is probably one of the reasons why currently the West does not want to directly face or attack Russia's forces invading Ukraine. This is why the USA and USSR had proxy wars in nations such as Korea, Vietnam and Afghanistan. Technically the conflict in Ukraine is some sort of a proxy war. The West supplies weapons to the Ukraine forces while Russia and her allies support the Russian rebels in Eastern Ukraine and also Russian forces are attacking Ukraine. As you see, history somewhat repeats itself and this helped me realise why studying history is beneficial to my personal knowledge and as well as the way I look at the world!

@@TheMormonPower @Alex Safyre Yes it indeed was. That is why the superpowers were very careful to avoid an all-out war. Direct communication is key which is why they ended up having a direct communication line between Washington and Moscow, known famously as the "Hotline". In my course, we focussed more on Cold War relations between the superpowers and we learnt about the Hungarian Uprising and the Prague Spring as well as the Berlin Wall. Also, just wanted to say that I finished my Cold War final exam yesterday :)

I really hope they haven't changed history so much that political correctness has extended to the names of the two most seminal nuclear devices ever created. 1:52 a nuclear weapon might not sink all ships as the US themselves tried sinking their own Iowa class Battleship with a nuclear weapon. It didn't sink the first time so they tried it again. When that failed they sent every available Battleships, including another Ohio class to shoot at it for several days. It sunk when a bomb landed a direct hit on deck and blew up. Although I will not disagree against a concussion or death by nearby nuclear detonation.

None of the Iowa-class battleships were used in nuclear bomb tests. All four Iowa-class ships served for years afterwards and are now preserved. However, a number of other battleships and warships were used, including. There is no such thing as an Ohio-class battleship. The only battleship named Ohio was a Maine-class ship scrapped in 1922. USS Arkansas was the only battleship successfully sunk by a nuclear weapon. This was an underwater test where USS Arkansas was close enough to the epicenter to have her hull crushed by the shockwave through the water.

We in Greece have a very appropriate quote dating back in ancient times ; " One human can be to another the same as a pack of wolves " . The MAD doctorine is the first and last line of defense humanity has against a full blown nuclear conflict . If it were even a tiny bit possible for countries such as the US , Russia , China etc to circumvent around the UN's legislation about the use of nuclear and biological weapons ... heh , we wouldn't be here debating about the issue . No SALT treaties , no proxy wars , nothing could possibly stop the use of WMD's on a worldscale level . Most of times , I'm afraid of what happens if we the people don't fight back . Now ... , now I'm afraid of what happens if we do ...

While M.A.D. sounds insane. I believe it actually helps prevent wars. The time between WWI & WWII is pretty short. The time between WWII & WWIII has been much longer. Even if we eventually DO become involved in WWIII, I believe it would have happened years ago if we didn't have the prospect of nuclear weapons on the horizon. Too many countries still feel that they need to conquer other countries to gain ground and people, and to continue to grow. Without the threat & deterrence of a possible nuclear war, we would have been fighting off those 'conquerors' at our borders constantly ... like swatting at mosquitoes. Nuclear weapons are a horrible prospect, and hopefully we will never have to resort to them, but I firmly believe that has been the reason for no WORLD war for almost 80 years (hopefully that streak will continue and sane countries will continue to fear the use of nuclear weapons! 🙏)

These planes are rotated every 12 hours I think. This patrol was re started with one B-52 with the invasion of Crimea then upgraded to 3 planes with the attempted takeover of Ukraine.
