My mother is a watercolor painter and I’ve always wished I could paint. I never actually watched her process but after watching you for some time I decided to try. It is so helpful to watch from beginning to end. I never realized that there is a method. Working from light color to the more defining darker tones is such an interesting concept to me.
Thank you! I really appreciate how you talk throughout the video, explaining color, brush sizes, wetness of paint and paper etc.
You’re welcome!
the process of painting the sky fascinated me a lot. The scene is simple - painting is not that simple. It looks great.
I’m just starting with watercolor and seeing a pro walking me through the process so patiently is pure gold. Thank you so much!
So glad you liked it!
Matt thank you so much. I am a newbie at this craft. Your tips and videos are so helpful. I just followed along with the basic landscape. I took notes. Plan to do one myself of a similar photo I have. It won't look like your picture but I hope to learn as I go. I am over 70 and this is my first venture into art. I have done other things throughout my life but always wanted to try watercolor. My daughter, son-in-law and 8 year old grandson are all very creative and artistic. I never considered myself artistic because I couldn't draw. But I'm getting brave!! I want to paint for the joy of creating. So I will keep practicing. Thank you again Matt. Pat Miller
Hi Pat! I think that's great. It's never too late to learn. You may have a whole new chapter ahead of you. Happy painting!
Your contributions are both satisfying and instructive. After several years, I got my watercolor utensils out again and thanks to your films, I was able to paint some nice pictures right away.
TY for keeping the reference picture up. You explain well. New subscriber. 🇨🇦
You're in my top three of trusted watercolour inspiration. You give me great confidence. Thank you.
That's so kind of you. Thanks!
I can't get my watercolors dark enough. It either looks brown or it is too light and looks cartoony.
I love your demonstrations in the slow and patient where you go about explaining these techniques. I am so thankful to have come across your channel! Thank you!
Love these demos, I learn so much!
Thank you! 🙂
Thank you for sharing your gift with us. I learned so much and the painting is lovely.
A fabulous tutorial! Thank you kindly for this and the wonderful information you provided along the way.
I learned so much from this. Thank you. And you are calm and explain things well. ❤️
Thank you so much for posting this free tutorial. I love watercolor painting, however I am self taught because classes are too expensive where I live. I am always so grateful for content creators who post tutorials for free!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for such a great demonstration. You’re a very good teacher. I’m learning how to connect shapes and this demonstrates it perfectly. Really appreciate your sharing your knowledge with us.
Thank you so much for your tutorials and all of our great tips! I just started watercolour this week and have been watching so many of our videos. They are unbelievably helpful. My paintings are not terrible!
Just discovered your videos and subscribed. I am mainly a floral artist who has only been painting in watercolor two years. I recently decided to branch out and try doing landscapes. I find your videos very helpful! Lots of good information.
I loved painting this and it would not have come out nearly as well without all of your help. Thank you so much, you are very talented, I love your work. Please do more of the "small and simple" as you call them.
Many thanks for this great workshop! This helps me to get ahead and make progress in myprojects. I really like the way they show and explain it!
Awesome explanations and tutorial. Was intimidating at first still as a beginner but so thrilled with my results!! There's always something I could have gone back to and revised but let it be done while feeling really good about it!
Just discovered you! Boy, sure am glad I did! Love your paintings and I am able to follow along at my pace. Great teacher. Thanks.🙂
Thank you I will be patient and keep trying! Appreciate all the tips.
Thank you so mutch ❤❤❤ I have learn so mutch from you! Love painting! From Sweden !
Love your skies and they're something I can practice from. Thank You
You are so welcome
Thank you Matthew! That was a fantastic tutorial !
Fantastic video, I really enjoyed your teaching style, thank you. I really love how you have mixed the colours, I never knew to use lavender- brilliant tip!
Thank you for this one. I live in horse farm county and this is dear to my heart. Beautiful pasture with hay bales ❤❤❤😊
Matt, This video is very helpful to me. Thank you so very much for this clear, step by step demonstration!
Amazing cloud building - thank you.
Thanks for the great tips!
I've just subscribed, having discovered your channel a couple of weeks ago. This was such an excellent tutorial that it pushed me into my 6th -or maybe 7th- subscription to a TH-cam channel.
It's amazing to me how many excellent wstercolorists post their work here. In my experience, you have most succinctly stated the "watercolor problem", which is that the qualuties of medium itself -- it's wetness and continual drying.
I sincerely appreciate that you include instruction in what sort of strokes with what sorts of bushes work best to achieve a painterly effect, while also taking care that the result should appear fresh and not overworked. I'm beginning to think that the very best watercolors are so satisfying because they appear to have been painted spontaneously, and ala fresca. Your works seem to capture that magical quality of the medium, and I very much appreciate your sharing this with us.
Thank you! Sky in this piece is pure magic. I was intrigued seeing how you used the lavender, too.
Hello Rebecca
Thank you Matt. This was very helpful!
You are an excellent teacher!
Brilliant. Thank you.
You make it look so simple. Great lesson!
Glad you liked it!
Thank you for sharing this video! I followed along and I'm so pleased with the result, I can't believe that I painted it. I especially love the sky, this method of wetting both sides of the paper has really won me over. I am also a self-taught artist, so thank you for sharing all your knowledge.
So glad to hear that, Pamela! Best of luck in your painting.
Lovely. I have never seen an artist incorporate so much lavender. I would love a video on this! I also love the way you mix your greens
Hello Kelly
Excellent lesson! I enjoyed very much and happy with result.
I like your style of painting, how the light comes through and how you make it appear relaxed and easy to do. Inspiring me to continue. Thanks Matthew. Elke
So glad to hear that. Best of luck in your painting! Keep going!
Thank you...Great lesson..👍
I really like your recipe for green. I never used cobalt turquoise before ( to make green, but I will try it for sure.
Thank you soo much, one of the best tutorial to watch, I loved it
Just starting out with watercolors. Your tutorial gave me the confidence to get the paint on the paper and understand how to built a painting. Thank you
Glad I could help!
Really enjoyed this!
Thats the first video i saw that really explains me how to "build" clouds. Tanks!!! Love it ❤
Glad it was helpful!
PRO demo! Your channel is going to blow up man. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing! Such a great tutorial, Matthew. I really like your sky technique, and also, wetting both sides before starting the first layer is a great tip. However, my paper (Arches, 140 lb, rough) buckles quite a bit when dried, after that first wash. How do you prevent that from happening to you?
Very nice painting. Thank you for sharing !
Beautiful and realistic sky and clouds. I am very happy with your video. 😊
Thanks a lot for your free vdo of the great work of creating such a good looking fluffy cloud
Thank you for sharing... You are amazing..🙏
Thank you for the tips... I am so, so new to this all. Thank you for letting me know when to let it dry. I have watched others and they don't let me know they have let their paper dry. I continue on and find myself with mud on my paper. I am going to watch this one over again and give it a try. This is great and you are very inspiring . I can do this. 😄
Yes, you can do it!
I like your descriptions as you paint
That is so nice. Loved your narration details and relaxing voice. Real cool seeing the layers.
Those Clouds.✨✨..I was swooning as you created that sky. You make it look so easy. I have to think it's years of practice and creating your brilliant technique. Maybe 1K more in skies, I too will get there. Thanks for the brilliant instruction and taking us on a journey to create something brilliant. Mind you mine looks close to yours, but isn't art really all about interpretation? Thank you for sharing with all of us and allowing us to grow as better artists too.
Thank you so much for the video. I learned a lot about how to paint a nice sky 🙏🙏I love your way of explaining every detail .
Glad it was helpful!
What an excellent tutorial! Learned a great deal in terms of brushwork & colour mixing. I appreciate your articulate, calm and gently spoken style as well. I have subscribed.
I tried wetting both sides of my paper today…it was in a sketchbook but even so worked beyond expectations! The background I wanted to establish before doing detail work came out exactly as I envisioned it and this was because I wasn’t fighting the paper drying out…I had plenty of time to set the color just the way I wanted. Thank you for the greatly appreciated advice and tutorials. 👏🌞🌅
Hello how are you
Love it! Thank you for sharing
Glad you liked it!
Great sky.
Very very helpful! Thank you you’re doing great with these videos. Love it!
Glad you like them!
I enjoyed your demo. Your explanations are clear and simple. I like the way you painted the light
I am a Sumi-e painter and trying the watercolor
Technique
As a French lady I would have painted a cow in this field. I am going to try
Thank you
I really liked this Matthew thanks!
Enjoy your tutorials 👍
I have seen a lot of watercolor videoes lately - this was one of the best!
Excellent video, thanks for posting.
Another good one. Thank you!
Thank you for this amazing video, Matthew! Painted following your tips and steps and got a beautiful art :) More practice on the way!!
So glad to hear that!
Hi Matthew. The painting turned out great! Thanks for the tutorial. My question is how long do you actually wait until the paper is totally dry after the first wash? I would like to try the method of wetting both sides of the paper to be able to work on my skies a little bit more, but I am also a bit impatient for the second wash. I noticed that it takes more time for the paper to dry when both sides are wet. Do you also suggest using a hairdryer?
thanks for sharing - really enjoyed🙏
Thank you very much for your work. The video and comments you make of the process are as good as the watercolor you have painted.
Thank you very much!
I tried setting both sides of the paper the way you do and I loved it. Learning a lot from your channel. Love the painting
Terima kasih.. sudah sharing. Pewarnaannya bagus.. n natural.
Mantaap..!!
👍😘
Excellent demo painting
I could understand really how to paint in watercolor, thank u sir, i like your painting than the original🌹
Thank you!!! I really loved this one ..
Glad to hear that!
Great tutorial Mathew.
Very pretty!
Thanks so much sir.
I did enjoy this demonstration. Your reference photo seemed so plain and you really improved it. I've always thought those round hay bales were a nice subject. You're so good at sky.
Thank you very much!
How do you get your edges so beautifully deckled from the start of your painting? Thank you!
Thank you for your sharing
Love the videos. Would love it if you could list the paints you use below the vid ahead of time.
Thanks for your good advice.
Thank you.
I like the way you start with very wet paper to create the softened effect. How long would you typically leave it before applying paint on top of another wash? Thanks again.
Wonderful. Thank you
You're welcome!
Best video I have seen in a long time! You make it look so easy .... thank you for your excellent teaching style! Fay G.
Great help
Thanks!
Hi Matthew, I really do enjoy your videos and style. As a newbie to your channel, I am wondering if you have ever touched on your stance with regard to painting from photos vs plain air? I see there seems to be a sharp divide between those who say never paint from photos vs those who say get with the times and use all the tools we have at our disposal to help us grow. Just curious on your thoughts.
Sehr schön und gut gezeigt.Danke
Hi Matthew, I was watching a lot of Christian Koivumaa's videos and got your channel in the feed, so thanks to him I now watch you too 😄 Your styles are somewhat similar but also with very different approaches. You both seem to be great guys with a sense of humour, and it would be fabulous to see both of you in a video "side by side" doing a watercolor from the same photo! I'm sure he would be game. I got the idea because I just did an exercise in one of Christian's online courses from a very similar photo to the one in your video here.
What a GREAT idea for an infotaining way to observe art and art making
Thank you so much
Beautiful ❤️
Best tutorial I have seen. I love your explanations and your style of Watercolour painting. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺 😊
Thank you! Very kind of you.
You make it look so easy and then I have a go haha!
Very helpful. Thank you.
