I couldn't justify the 300, so I bought the 200 version. It arrived today. It calibrates just like you show here, and seems to work well. I checked the roof of my truck, and as I expected it's a bit thicker than the stock paint. Once I wet sand and buff I'll check again. Pretty slick tools.
So glad to hear it SGS. I do think it will come in handy making videos - just to show that the filler used ends up not being that thick after all the sanding, etc. Have a good week my friend :)
Two years ago, I purchased the VDiagtool VC300 you tested on your You Tube channel, and up until this point it’s worked flawlessly, (don’t laugh) but lately when I first turn it on , I get an ERR7 message on the screen? I’ve re- calibrated it and it still comes up every time I turn this little device on? Damn, I’m 72 and electronics now a days are kicking my ass! Got any ideas? I have emailed the web site from the manufacturer for help, but still haven’t heard back from them. My wife suggested I forget about it , as it still measures and gives me a voice activated response, I’m thinking she will use this in my up-coming commitment hearing 😂 Thanks for your time! I really appreciate and enjoy your videos! Sincerely Kevin Hintz
Update, I got a response from the manufacturer on my ERR7 They state: their device comes with two different metal bases. Please place the device on both bases, Calibrate both bases separately, calibrate the device on both, then restart! My device now works perfectly, no ERR7 reappears and it functions as it should! Hope that helps anyone else who has had this issue? It’s fixed 👍
Wow!!!! Thanks for doing the leg work Kevin. Awesome - glad someone got back to you. Sorry I got to you late - just saw this post. I believe the same thing happened to me when I began using it - couldn't figure it out - then I think I watched a video or two on it or something
The video is very interesting. I have a problem with a similar VC-300 device, I get an ERR7 message on the screen, and it does not allow me to see the measurements. Do you know what I can do?
I think I had the same issue but unfortunately I can't remember what solved the issue. I break it out and see if I can come up with a solution for you :)
I tried to recreate or get that error message and couldn't with my device. Like I said, I do remember having an issue - I think it was when I was calibrating the tool. I remember I had to follow the directions exactly how it was stated in the owners manual. Once you calibrate it for different thickness metals and then zero it out, you should be fine - let me know if you figure it out :)
You only have to calibrate it once. Maybe if the battery goes dead and it looses memory, you might have to re-calibrate. The inst. say, "Magnetic and non-mag base calibrations don not effect each other." The aluminum piece in the calibration kit would be for "zeroing" it out depending on if it's al or metal - I'm thinking. Let me know how your model works - curious :)
A handy tool to have when looking at vehicles to purchase…great video Jerry!
Thanks UPK - hope we survive the heat today!
@@LakesideAutobody it’s been rough on us all week!…stay hydrated and cool my friend!

Cool tool!
You know it won’t be long before you’ll just download an APP on your phone to check paint thickness. Good video Jerry.
Greg
Good idea. Now start writing the program for that before some else does 🤣
Nice video and great tool!😁
Thanks! 👍

How can you find only the clear coat thickness?
Not trying to be funny
Sand through it until you hit base coat.
The tool reflects off metal to get a measurement.
There are thickness gauges that can see the different layers of coating, but not very reliably. It has trouble with wet on wet layers etc.
That's a very handy tool. I wonder how consistent paint thickness is on a brand new car that's been painted on an assembly line by robots
I got the newer tool and do I have to calibrate before every car I paint correct? And do I have to recalibrate if it’s aluminum?
