I would Redo some of the Mercenaries lines to make them better! As a man who loves this franchise I want nothing more than to stick to that beautiful High Standard! James did a really good job trying to emulate all of the mercs. Of course it was obviously impossible to get everyone's voices perfectly, but it was still a fine effort.

For one guy, the mercs are really good. Scout and Medic both sound really similar to official to me, and the only one that’s notably bad IMO is Spy. He doesnt really sound like spy to me. Overall, James is a really talented voice actor and I hope he gets more work in the future.
I thought Spy was one of the better ones. But the goal isn’t to sound like the original voice actors. It’s the match the voices with the characters too. His voices are very fitting.

To clear a few things up: these voice lines were not recorded by Valve, they were a built in part of the community mod version that got added into the game. If you want to get at these yourself, just open the vsh_nucleus.bsp with 7zip. All the other map files seem to have some sort of encryption on them and won't open and GCFScape can open them all to browse thruugh fine, but won't let you play or extract any of them. Also that big silence gap in the middle of the Scout lines isn't a mistake in the video it's like that in the files. One of the sounds just has a second or so of silence at its beginning.

Where on Earth did you find the Gray Mann voice files? I've been scouring the .BSP & .VPK files via GCFScape, but all I can find are Saxton & Mercs in the .BSP files.
Y’know, regardless about what you think about the voice acting, the actual lines are pretty well written and actually incorporate the merc’s different personalities into tasks that could’ve otherwise been lazy rehashes of the same line nine times over.
@Zaktot-ho8fe You know, that is exactly how I felt about the new Saxton voicelines. Disregarding the voice itself, the lines themselves seem a bit less tight than the ones from the sourcemod version. The original lines were snappy and felt like Saxton. These ones feel like they're trying to be a bit too jokey. Most egregious line in my opinion was the "CEO of Mann Co" one where it tries to be self-aware but just kind of falls flat.

James did a phenomenal job with every single merc. The voices he gave them are loud, aggressive, and full of spirit. He can easily have been an original voice actor for one of the mercs. He perfectly captured the feel of classic tf2. He was fantastic. I like Simmons Hale, I do. It’s good and if it were the first voice, it would have been fine. It’s good. But I like the og VSH way more. It’s way tougher and more intimidating. He feels like a behemoth.

Never thought i would ever hear a new voiceline for soldiers, while it's not Rick May, just hearing a great impression get in the game makes me tear up
i really like james's stuff, really funny guy, must be amazing to be an official part of a game you really like. i do have to wonder what john patrick lowrie recorded for in valve's studio some time ago.
I hope the creator of this map and the voice actors don't get discouraged from some of the negativity towards the voice acting. For a community effort, this is absolutely spectacular and you hardly notice the slight differences in the middle of the combat and insanity! Just wish Valve would fix VSH mode and get it publicly deployed already....
They could just hire all the OG voice actors for the mercenaries again, of course except for Rick May as the Soldier (Rest In Peace) which James McGuinn can work to voice him
It would be an Honor and A Priviledge to Continue Soldiers Legacy I put a lot of Passion into soldiers lines for this update because I wanted to make him proud

I could be wrong tho, but considering how active all the VAs are on social media and even the Sniper's VA getting called into Valve to record voices.. this isnt them trying to replace them..

For one guy, the merc voices are really impressive! Props to McGuinn for managing to capture 9 different characters like that! His soldier and medic were real stand outs for me. I’d almost say that if they ever decided to recast Soldier since May’s passing, he’d be a really good choice.

AFAIK the VSH gamemode that got added was from the steam workshop and these voice lines were already there. It's unlikely that they will have the VAs record new voice lines considering that Watergate still has the TTS voice to this day.
I don’t think it would be a bad idea for teammates to announce that your team doesn’t have a medic in other game modes. Just a friendly reminder that someone should be medic lol
Everyone complaining about Spy's voice being the worst one, I was going in expecting it to actually be the worst one. It's literally the best one along with Medic. I was very impressed with the Spy, down to the exaggerated nasally accented voice. People have to keep in mind the mercs were all voiced by one, ONE SINGULAR MAN. If you think the impressions are bad why dont YOU go do them instead

Since VSH was a community created gamemode, they couldn't get the original voice actors. These voicelines were from the community games, and i guess they just used them. Saxton sounds different tho from when i played it once. That was 3 years ago though so i'm not even sure anymore.
Grey mann is an absolute peice of job, he did him so well and it feels so increedibly professional. However, the rest of the mercs feel a lot amatourish, the worst part is that most of the voice actors would love to voice act for the new lines
Dude the fact the new merc lines were all voiced by ONE DUDE really shows how versatile he is. That is mighty impressive. And the fact the grunts and screams are spot on is kinda crazy. Fantastic job for a community made effort.

Honestly, I feel like a dork since the first one that made me question the voice lines was Scout even though it was super on point. I was able to tell the difference.

Artists are being let off from companies and whatnot in favor of ai art generation since it's cheaper, and those artists depend on their art for that income. It's also spreading to writers and i fear it will start putting writers out of work, amd then voice actors too as it progresses. Yes. It is a real problem for a lot of people.
The mercs pointing out where Hale is, telling each other to take cover and complaining about Medic dying adds so much to the immersion to the point where it no longer feels fanmade.
People shitting on James’ takes on the mercs is so disrespectful. None of the VAs featured here are impressionists or copying the OG VAs’ voices-they’re doing their own take on the characters, and they’re doing it great. I think back to Nolan North and how he took over for Engineer because Grant Goodeve is very hard to reach. No one had an issue with that, so why is this something to be so furious about? Respect your voice actors. It is not that hard.
why do your own take on a character that has existing voicelines in the game that you aren't replacing? it just sounds bad and off putting when you hear 2 voices coming out of your character. maybe if you voiced them from scratch it'd be okay, but there's no reason to do your own take when their original voice is still in the game and aren't replaced even in the vsh maps.
@@BlacKnight132 This is not bad at all. This isn’t replacing anyone, and this isn’t even Valve’s doing. It’s a community mode, with community voice actors. New voices for the same character is nothing new in voice over, and absolutely nothing new in TF2 specifically. Having more voices for one character makes that character more versatile and unique, with each variation brining the VA’s own charm with it. For example, we wouldn’t have Sonic’s modern voice without the countless prior interpretations of his character through the voice actors. This is not bad at all. In fact, this is great

Have your own take on a character when you get to voice it without the old voices being present. It's very off putting to hear 2 distinct voices in a character while playing the game. There's nothing wrong with having your own take on a character and giving it a unique spin, but don't do it when the current voices are present, it just ruins the feel of the character. I'd commend the VA's performance(which are seriously impressive with his range) if it was in something like an SFM movie. But adding these voicelines were completely unnecessary.

And, guess what, some of the voice actors are not present to record. So, of course, voice acting in included within this community. This is a change, yes. But also, this is good, this is fun. I dont understand how this could ever be seen as a negative.
Holy shit James did super fucking good with the merc voices. Heavy and Demo are on point. Engineer too. Scout isn't too bad. Only ones that really had me shrug were Sniper and Spy. But still for 1 guy? That's damn impressive.
God damn I can’t get past this guy’s talent at voice acting, I can’t really think of too many other people off the top of my head who can go in so many different directions with their voice seemingly effortlessly. Demo was my favorite by far, and I had to do a double take to make sure it wasn’t ai on Heavy because the grit in his voice sounded so close. I honestly think that given a little longer to practice he’d nail sniper and spy by rounding out the accents. This man is a fucking hero it’s crazy
It'd be really nice if Valve would have original voice lines recorded and officially added where possible, but honestly I don't think it's worth complaining about. We have Vs Saxton Hale in casual now, and that's just incredible. Or at least it will be when Valve fixes it so we can play the new mode.
I like the fact that the people who made this provided custom voice lines for Saxton, graymann, and even the Mercs (especially the weapon extras). Also cool Valve allowed these voice lines.

Regardless you did them justice, by far the best soldier impression I’ve heard. There are few voice actors with the range to do all those voices so I’m honestly very appreciative.

Dude the fact the new merc lines were all voiced by ONE DUDE really shows how versatile he is. That is mighty impressive. And the fact the grunts and screams are spot on is kinda crazy. Fantastic job for a community made effort.

James has some massive range with his voice, it's actually insane. I was convinced that the Pyro, Demo, and Engie's voicelines were the actual voice actors.
I listen to a lot of Engie's voice lines, his voice is way too raspy to pass as the real deal.
People say spy is the worst one, but to me it’s one of the best. Demo is the absolute best to me.

Honestly, I feel like a dork since the first one that made me question the voice lines was Scout even though it was super on point. I was able to tell the difference.
@@AlexSzubka Off as in it doesnt sound like the og voice actors, which is an impossible task. If this had been his voice from the start, it would perfectly capture the feel of the game.

@@e_0265no. AI is more bad than good. Plus AI voices are not great anyways. Too iften it's very easy to tell that it isn't a real person.
@@Bonniethebunny It's a controversial subject, but we always like AI as a tool. It doesn't harm anyone, some of us don't know the future. What we know is that it could save humanity. Depends on whether it's good or bad.
@@e_0265 AI is literally putting many people out of work. Yes it is doing real harm. Artists are being let off from companies and whatnot in favor of ai art generation since it's cheaper, and those artists depend on their art for that income. It's also spreading to writers and i fear it will start putting writers out of work, amd then voice actors too as it progresses. Yes. It is a real problem for a lot of people.
The mercs pointing out where Hale is, telling each other to take cover and complaining about Medic dying adds so much to the immersion to the point where it no longer feels fanmade.
Medic and Scout voices were ON POINT, everyone else is a bit on the doubt line, but for it all being a single person? This is fucking amazing

People shitting on James’ takes on the mercs is so disrespectful. None of the VAs featured here are impressionists or copying the OG VAs’ voices-they’re doing their own take on the characters, and they’re doing it great. I think back to Nolan North and how he took over for Engineer because Grant Goodeve is very hard to reach. No one had an issue with that, so why is this something to be so furious about? Respect your voice actors. It is not that hard.

why do your own take on a character that has existing voicelines in the game that you aren't replacing? it just sounds bad and off putting when you hear 2 voices coming out of your character. maybe if you voiced them from scratch it'd be okay, but there's no reason to do your own take when their original voice is still in the game and aren't replaced even in the vsh maps.
@@BlacKnight132 This is not bad at all. This isn’t replacing anyone, and this isn’t even Valve’s doing. It’s a community mode, with community voice actors. New voices for the same character is nothing new in voice over, and absolutely nothing new in TF2 specifically. Having more voices for one character makes that character more versatile and unique, with each variation brining the VA’s own charm with it. For example, we wouldn’t have Sonic’s modern voice without the countless prior interpretations of his character through the voice actors. This is not bad at all. In fact, this is great
@@i.wannabe.m.e my point is that both of the voices are existing alongside each other, instead of being a separate interpretation. Have your own take on a character when you get to voice it without the old voices being present. It's very off putting to hear 2 distinct voices in a character while playing the game.
There's nothing wrong with having your own take on a character and giving it a unique spin, but don't do it when the current voices are present, it just ruins the feel of the character. I'd commend the VA's performance(which are seriously impressive with his range) if it was in something like an SFM movie. But adding these voicelines were completely unnecessary.
@@BlacKnight132 These voices are present in one specific mode. If both versions were in the same mode, I’d understand your point entirely, but no. These two are still very much separated. And, guess what, some of the voice actors are not present to record. Be it personal life, busy work, or, of course the obvious and unfortunate passing, VAs have lives outside of the one role you know them from. And, again, not a Valve update! Community update. So, of course, voice acting in included within this community. This is a change, yes. But also, this is good, this is fun. I dont understand how this could ever be seen as a negative.

Yes, some voices might not be 100% accurate, but let's be honest, that level of voice imitation is superb.
Matthew is alright, but it doesn't have the same kind of impact and bravado as old Saxton.
Holy shit James did super fucking good with the merc voices. Heavy and Demo are on point. Engineer too. Scout isn't too bad. Only ones that really had me shrug were Sniper and Spy. But still for 1 guy? That's damn impressive.
God damn I can’t get past this guy’s talent at voice acting, I can’t really think of too many other people off the top of my head who can go in so many different directions with their voice seemingly effortlessly. Demo was my favorite by far, and I had to do a double take to make sure it wasn’t ai on Heavy because the grit in his voice sounded so close. I honestly think that given a little longer to practice he’d nail sniper and spy by rounding out the accents. This man is a fucking hero it’s crazy

It'd be really nice if Valve would have original voice lines recorded and officially added where possible, but honestly I don't think it's worth complaining about. We have Vs Saxton Hale in casual now, and that's just incredible. Or at least it will be when Valve fixes it so we can play the new mode.
Engie's voicelines are so great, legit the best impression I've heard.
I like the fact that the people who made this provided custom voice lines for Saxton, graymann, and even the Mercs (especially the weapon extras). Also cool Valve allowed these voice lines.
I like it how engie sound like John Marston
James did amazing with the voices, but if it was my choice, I would have had spy and medic done by the originals. Their voices are very specific and difficult to replicate
I actually would not mind if Dennis Bateman and Robin Atkin Jones took over their characters! If there’s one voice out of all I would want to continue doing, Is Soldier 🙏
@@mcguinnsbook yeah I think it’s no secret that a lot of people would have preferred the originals, but for whatever reason I guess it wasn’t feasible. Regardless you did them justice, by far the best soldier impression I’ve heard. There are few voice actors with the range to do all those voices so I’m honestly very appreciative.
