    Replace an expensive board. However, we are looking for a FIX! .... not a board swap. However your video is good and shows which screws to undo, thank you.

    FYI for ALL: The ribbon cable connector has a little brown bar that lightly and minutely slides out.
    Pulling out that ribbon cable like that could damage it.
    Pay attention to the orientation of the ribbon cable upon removal.
    Or
    You can do it like Chris did. But, pay attention to the orientation of the ribbon cable upon removal. Insert correctly after.
    It's possible to repair that ribbon cable if it's damaged; you don't need to replace it.

    Yaesu no longer sell just the LCD screen, They only now sell the complete PCB that includes the LCD screen already attached .

    Order! Yaesu should have to send a replacement board for free. A lot of people are having this issue.

      Hi jon this is an old post. But if you look through the comments you will see the location I bought it. I’ve got a feeling they sell them now at MARTIN Lynch. It was a lot of money I can’t remember this was five years ago. Probably £150. Look through all the comments as every question has been asked before.

    The screen can be ordered from here www.gbantennes.com/en/yaesu-parts/701-yaesu-lcd-display-ft857.html?search_query=ft+857&results=5 type ft 857 in the search box to find the part.

      +Chris Andrews DEAD LINK, any updates? I myself have been VERY disappointed with Yaesu's lack of support regarding this well known display problem which was a result of economizing the unit at the expense of reliability. Using conductive adhesive for a critical component on a rig of this quality is very disappointing since this problem has been documented for close to 10 YEARS.

      Link provide works fine. I am in need of the part number. Do you have it?

  • @n1kkri
    @n1kkri 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I also have this problem but its only a couple vertical lines. Not a major problem. I read somewhere it has to do with
    the method used to connect the LCD display to the circuit board. The connections are not soldered but sometime
    of a glue that makes the connection. I wonder if anyone has tried using a heat gun to software the glue
    hopeing it will help make a better connection?

    • @WW5RM
      @WW5RM 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I read similar and am wondering if reseating the cable will help / fix it? Good question. Considering the 857 display is removable that helps. I may try it in the future.
      Mine is intermittently doing it but not as bad as yours. I think the heat is what causes it. I take my display out during hot summer days here in Texas.

    I have read using a heat gun in the area of the LCD driver chip improves the connection and most if not all of the zebra effect is gone. Has anyone tried this?

    Nicely done! How much was the board?

    Thanks, neat job! Will you need any form of calibration including any appropriate test gear for that?

      @digitalanaloguehamradio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It works just fine. This is an old video and I have sold it. But no calibration was required. Thanks for watching

      Great job! Did it fix it? I probably would have done the same! These new SMD radios are Greek to me!
      But now I know and hopefully will fix my FT-857 display soon. So I learned a lot from your video and comments!
      Thanks for posting it!

    Just called Yaesu. they no longer carry the LCD screen for this fix so I'll have to purchase the whole board. On the bright side at least I wont have to worry about soldering.

    • @HugDeeznueces
      @HugDeeznueces 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      BS! Yaesu is trying to make more money. Did you call then in the USA? I will guess you are in the USA. The link provided by Chris works fine but the exchange rate might be an awful price when converting to dollars. How much is the head?

    That "THING" you pulled the flex cable form is called a ZIF socket. for Zero insertion force" socket! You dont yank the flex out. The dark brown plastic is clicked out about 1mm and then the flex just comes out easily and to put it back in you just slide it in and then click the brown plastic back in to place.
    Its frustrating to see people doing things on TH-cam as if they know what they are doing yet have no technical skills what so ever.
    Very disappointing. Sorry.

      +Eric Freund In spite of your superior attitude I'm fairly certain you at one time were a beginner as well. To Chris's credit, he at least posted more information regarding this 'fix' than you have.

    • @ericfreund4058
      @ericfreund4058 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Its about the blind leading the bind and a little information is dangerous! Most people do not have the technical aptitude to perform these fixes and that is why I do not post! I have had to help with a lot of costly repairs that were due to "I gave it a try to fix my self" that would have only been a 5 minute $20 fix if done properly with the right tools Jay.

      I understand about bad information, in this case he provided the gist of the information good enough. Perhaps you were a bit confrontational in your critique. As a broadcast chief engineer and licensed amateur operator for over 45 years, I've have worked with others who have many levels of skills from zero to advanced, in every case I've exercised the fine art of tact when I teach those who are willing to learn. Concerning the Yaesu display repair, charges from Yeasu are well north of $500 for the part alone! So in this case while the descriptive info was less than you might have wished, such as 'thingy' the core info was spot on especially the availability of the part from sources other than Yaesu at a more affordable price. Best wishes to you and 73

      Well I disagree with you Eric, this is amateur radio, an experimental radio and electronics hobby. The guy done well and showed me what was involved it repairing this fault. He may not have disconnected the flex cable the correct way but certainly solved the problem. Well Chris you made it clear from the start that you were not a technician, in this case you saved yourself a good amount of money doing the job yourself and showing the rest of us what was involved, well done my friend and keep posting.

      Nothing wrong with being an amatuer. But this is Amatuer Radio as in pertaining to non professional use. In Australia you are required to pass a minimum technical requirement as I am sure you must in your country as well. This is not an issue about having a go! This is about the Blind leading the blind. Nothing wrong with trying but everything wrong with passing that information as instructional! It takes 30 seconds to google ribbon cable connectors and realise you do not just "Yank" them out.
      People trying to make educational informational content should make sure it is!
