How to Add Fog & Light to Photos in Photoshop
Learn how to add a bit of mystery to your photos by creating fog and light beams from scratch!
Bonus: Download the custom brush and image used in this tutorial.
Create Fog Using a Custom Brush
Fog is surprisingly easy to create in Photoshop, provided you have the right resources.
First, download the Phlearn Fog Brush below. After downloading, double-click on the .abr file to load it into Photoshop. Select the Phlearn Fog Brush by first selecting the Brush Tool (B) in Photoshop, then right-click to bring up the list of available brush presets. The Phlearn Fog Brush will be at the end of the list.
While using the Phlearn Fog Brush, try changing the brush size to approximate different types of fog. Also, start by using brush flow around 30% to get a natural appearance. If you find that the fog has too much detail, simply add a gaussian blur to the fog layer.
How to Create Light Beams
In order to give this image a bit more life, we are going to add beams of light coming from the disco ball.
To create beams of light in Photoshop, start by creating a new layer and painting random patches of white with the brush tool. These random patches of white will serve as 'locators' for the next step, applying a radial blur.
The goal is to make the random patches of white into streaks, and to do so, apply a radial blur. Go to 'Filter - Blur - Radial Blur' and choose 'Zoom' under 'Blur Method'. Adjust the amount of zoom to 80 and choose a center point for the zoom blur by clicking on the 'Blur Center' graph. This filter does not give you a live preview, so you have to guess where the center of the zoom blur will be.
If you get the center wrong, simply undo your blur and re-do it again, this time moving the blur center. Once you are satisfied with the blur center, you can adjust the amount of blur.
Now you have a zoom blur coming from the center of the Disco Ball

I learn a lot anytime i visit this page. I'm able to understand the various tools better. knowing the tools makes it easier to create wonderful art works. Thanks so much guys.
Hey Phlearn. I just wanted to say thank you for this tutorial. I really enjoyed both the way you taught it, the included brush, and the results. The fog really added that special sauce to my weekly photo assignment and I'm super pumped by it. Thank you so much. It's super great for halloween pictures.
I'm a total beginner to Photoshop. Your tutorial videos are really helpful. I'd like to look into using a graphics tablet going forward. May I ask which tablet you use in this video?
Glad you enjoy our videos! We use a Wacom Intuos Pro (Small) Tablet.
Thank you, I've just ordered one
Your tutorials and downloads are so wonderful. Thanks

same here, you did the gcse art photography exam? How did it go.
So awesome... everytime you nail the things I am looking for. I am always finding lots of other tutorials that often just look cheap in the end. Your techniques are always top notch! Thanks a lot for all this content!
Great Tutorial... This "FOG" just blew my atmosphere ... m definitely gonna use this technique in my future tutorials for sure and all credits goes to you
Thank you for this great video! I have been watching your videos for a few years now and they are really a great help!
Thank you for the wonderful tutorial and brush. Great video !!!
I wish I had the half of the photoshop knowledge that you have Aaron.
He is really good. Just keep practice over time you will learn.
Honestly the majority of my Photoshop knowledge came from the first 3-5 months of using it. All you have to do is learn new techniques and put them into practice. If you want to get better, keep doing tutorials like these. Not only do they teach you new effects, but they also give you knowledge you can apply to other techniques. ☺️
thank you so much for the custom brush. It's really good
Love this tutorial so much!! Thank you for the image & brush!!!
Great job and a great brush!
Your tutorials are fantastic. I have learnt so much from them. Thank you.
Great tutorial and simple for beginners like me
"as you can see it's a very natural effect" (while painting fluorescent pink clouds shrouding mans face...). Just a little rib there. Indeed, the finished product looks very realistic; great tutorial!
i'm not a beginner, rather intermediate but 70 % of my skills I owe you :) you're doing a good job
great had a go with the brush and it also works very well as a watercolour wash brush. thanks for sharing
Nice tutorial. Learned so much from you.
HEY Phlearn!! This episode is awesome. So much new stuff to learn. But I have one question. Could you make a video that shows how you make that custom fog brush? Maybe the basic steps and principles so that I can come up with my own custom fog brush? That would be so much help. Thanks for all the awesome teaching and keep up the good work!!
Very, very, ... very Thanks Aaron.
Hey aaron! Maybe you could make a video on the mixer brush tool or the dodge and burn tool. I used it on retouching skin but im too afraid i will mess up. So i alway end up using your previous tutorial
I love your tutorials and I would love to join you there for more lessons..
Super useful brush, thanks indeed… amazing work!

this is grate I am ahead of my class because of this 😀😀😄😄
Great work!!!
Hi Aaron! Can you teach us how to make realistic brushes like this fog brush?
Hey Mads, go to Brusheezy.com and search for Fog brushes.
Yes, but it would be great to know how to make them successfully to avoid licencing issues.
1. Take a picture of the sky with clouds.
2. Open the image in Photoshop. (unlock it to make it a layer)
3. Go to select>color range.
4. With the eyedropper select a colour from the clouds.
5. Select more colour from the clouds by holding shift and clicking around.
6. With the marching ants around the selected clouds - apply layer mask.
7. Now all you should have is the cloud.
8. Add new transparent layer underneath.
9. Turn the top original 'cloud' layer into screen blending mode.
10. Make a selection around the cloud with the marquee tool.
11. Then head to Edit>Define Brush Preset
12. Name your new brush.
Hope this helps, let me know if you'd like me to do a video on it.
Bobby :)
Thanks!! it was just the thing I needed for my work!!!
HI Phlearn!
Come on phlearn say hi!

Still there
I am new to photoshop and it can be confusing.. Thank you for your videos..
america brush shape :D, Thanks Aaron ! very helpful and inspiring !
Would you recommend this brush for something like cigar smoke?
As always... A great tutorial! Thank you!
a whole new step for me thanks
best brush ever
Hi Aaron
your tutorials are great.
I have photoshop cs5 and tried to load the fog brush into my system. when I did that I got an error message saying that it could not load the brush because the file is not compatible with this version of photoshop.
Do you have any suggestions on how to resolve this problem.
keep up the good work
The only options I have on the pulldown for presets in the preset manager is contours and tools. When I try to load more, I am not finding anything else. I am using the newest version of Photoshop.
Thx 4 all your Videos..!
i came for the brush, left a like thank you bye
The info you post is amazing. thank you so much for giving some helpful tips for a guy that loves learning. one question for you though. when I am editing I HAVE to listen to music. what do you listen to when editing?
Suberb canon. Thanks for great brush. Excellent!
Aaron had a TOTAL makeover on this one. Was this Photoshop?
Hi Aaron, as always brilliant tutorial and very, very useful. Can you teach us how to create a gradient map which can then be used as a LUT. Cheers mate.
Aaron why do you never use the Quick Selection Tool?
Great tutorials.. love them.. but, how do you rotate the brush after every click? Greets from switzerland
You can add or remove the brush rotation in the brush settings.
This is amazing what a great picture!!
I love this episode. Can you do a tutorial on how to make someone look wet or covered in sun tan oil. How do you make them look shinny and wet?
thank you, for the brush
whats the shortcut of enabling - disabling a layer?
Do you need photoshop cc do use the downloaded brush
Great tutorial! Random but what frame rate do you shoot these videos in? The parts that show Aaron talking look hyper realistic, almost like a soap opera. Guessing its the lack of normal motion blur that's causing this. Just curious.
Hey, great tut. I think it is better to convert the layer to a smart object before it will apply the zoom blur effect. Better than restore the values, or center the effect ...;-) What do you think? Thanks for the tutorial ...
i've been subscribed to your channel for a long time, why haven't your videos been appearing on my subscription box? I had to look you up manually.
Love the Channel! Any plans on showing us Graphic Designers how to create images similar to those used in the Battlefield1 game?
Thank's for Tutorial. :)
Thank you!
For the fog, shouldn't you be sampling from the 'background' with the color picker? I see you sampling as your painting the clouds but that's only sampling the layer you are painting on. Right?
Thank you
I downloaded your image and worked on it with the brushes and light rays. (I need to watch the video again.) I also did a bunch of artistic effects on the image using your brushes and many other edits. Can I put that on the photo group pages I am a member of - of course, your name is on it and I would state that it is (obviously) not my image. :-) Love the brushes.
How to do you stop the rotation of the brush?
excellent....
Thank you, sir.
Is it possible to get the brush to CS 5 ?
useful tactic
What version of photoshop do you need to use this brush?
He is using Photoshop CC.
Vince Nollora Most Photoshop versions should work
Perfectly! Thank you so much :))
how much is the brush?
I mean, I used it for my logo, but it still gave a cool effect hahaha.
I'm trying to remember the useful keyboard shortcuts in PS: It would be very helpful to have the keyboard strokes appear as text at the bottom of the youtube screen. :)
i can use the brush for commercial ? :-)
i'm stock photo.
I love you Aaron Nace
please, help me how to make a hand movement using puppet pin tools, in PS cc 2015. thankyou..
How does Aaron resize his brush like he does at 17:57 so that his brush circle becomes red...seems like a faster way to resize it and i'd like to know it, can anyone help?
MrPiopiospy23 The left and right bracket keys will change the size for you, left for smaller and right for larger, hope this helps.
Pennys Little Bakery thanks even though i didnt talk about that technique :) the one im talking about is when you move your mouse either up and down or left and right which determines the size of the brush or its opacity...i forgot how to use that method :(
Joel Reyes thanks
Alt-right click
finallly
great tutorial but when I add the layer mask to the fog layer and then hide my fog for the shirt selection, the magic wand still selects the hidden fog and not the shirt. Any idea why that is happening?
Hi... How do jou paint end rotate the same time 3.40
I love your tutorials and have been following you for a long time, you focus on a lot of effects and human edits a lot though. I would love to see a creative way to make an Ad to post on social media sites for alternative styles.
Example: Meshing multiple photography photos together into a single photo but instead of separating them between simple lines of traditional white or black and a lot of the stuff used, making the images flow into each other almost with lines going between them at more of a 45 degree angle and instead of normal lines, using lines that either fade into the images, fade into similar colors and pop near the edges, or just create a unique non-standard professional but a creative professional ad for people that do ads for cosplay, art, and alternative styles.
I know the explanation looks really weird but if you see this and have any interest, I do have example images I can send you that I have seen of interesting styles.
Thanks.
My brush doesn't rotate each time I click, how can I fix that?
neither does mine, did you ever figure out how to make it work?
