High iq players are so valuable but highly underrated. Funny how people would say Dillingham is a top 3 pick but don’t think Clingan would be an extremely impactful player
Perfect pick for the Golden State Warriors. He can immediately come in and transform their defense next to Draymond Green. His passing, screen setting, and rim finishing is EVERYTHING that they are needing and been looking for since Andrew Bogut retired. Ironically, the Memphis Grizzlies would love him for the same reasons.
I think the problem with having players like Clingan is mainly 1) he doesnt have body control when carrying the ball 2) he resolves this by relying on solely his upper body to power through the post offensively 3) it's usually a low percentage outcome that may lead to turnovers which looking at his games...his post possessions did in fact lead to higher volume turnover fastbreaks. He only has one thing which is nice, footwork when setting up for a block...but he's simply a physically imposing center with no explosion who's ceiling could be Brad Miller but most likely end up being another type of Perkins
I think one of the more telling parts was your mentioning him playing an important role, and saying that most of the good teams have this, but I find myself concerned that he fills a role that doesn't need filling. If I'm drafting high, do I want a guy that probably tops out as the 25th best big in the league? Like Walker Kessler is an incredible rim protector who hasn't been able to get above 25 minutes a night on a bad team. To me (WAY less familiar with his game) he seems like the type of guy you love to grab in the 20s, but I just don't see the value in the top 10. But then, maybe this year really is that bad
The rumor is that Quin Snyder of the Hawks likes him. Atlanta could theoretically pick him number one, but I think a trade down would be more likely. Sarr vs. Clingan is an interesting conversation.
Problem is Houston needs shooter. I get they can actually run two big Sengun and Clingan by moving Jabari to 3 on some situations but HOU offemse flow so bad when Jalen is shooting like 17% from the three
Not many people 7’2” can play the game. This dude does everything a winning team needs from a classic big, screening, passing, rim protection. He reminds me of a younger Nurk on offense, a lighter Nurk on D. That’s a pretty good player.
He's a Gobert with better hands on offense. He's only Nurkic if you took Nurkic and made him a completely different player, which I believe defeats the point of making these comparisons. At least go with the old standby: "He reminds me of Larry Bird." lmao
@@somealias-zs1bw true, comparisons can only get you so close. But Nurk is not far off in terms of the kind of role he carves out on offense -- big screens, excellent hands and footwork, kind of slow, poor creativity finishing around basket. Gobert is overshooting his defensive upside in the NBA -- his rim protection instincts look the part but Gobert is on another level, but we shall see. I don't get the Bird reference. But I did watch Nurk play for the better part of a decade and stand by the comparison -- big dude who clogs the lane and has a lot of skill for screening and helping guards set the table. Super valuable player.
He’s MUCH better than Nurk on Defense. Slightly worse scorer than young Nurk. Donovan is a very High IQ, disciplined big man that has shown he can thrive in a legit NBA style system. Live read-and-react plays, seems like a winner and a great teammate to play eith
@@CarloBarlo69 it sure looks that way -- he seemed to practically orchestrate UConn's offense with his passing, and his defensive instincts are special. Nurk was a great defensive backstop, so it's a complement from me to compare a big body to him. But Nurk had lateral mobility issues, especially after his injury, and for some reason seemed to commit at least 1 bad foul a game, sometimes more. To get such an accomplished big, at such a young age, on a rookie scale deal is a spectacular value. Add Deni, a 6' 9" forward with good defense, and the Blazers have the makings of a competent defensive team in the west. As far as the offense goes, having bone-crushing pics set by a skilled big with excellent hands and passing reads is going to seem luxurious after watching Ayton's pick-and-pop, which I am not a fan of. LaMarcus did it to perfection, and even that wasn't a winning offense. My main takeaway here is that Portland's home crowd has no idea what it has been missing since Sabas and Sheed formed that great passing tandem. People are going to love this team if they continue on this vein of building a defensive team with good passers in the front court (Deni is in the 90th % for forward assists). We'll see if the wins pile up, but I for one am excited to see good team ball and frontcourt size return to Rip City. It's about time.
I feel like he’s just so slow which makes sense, but I think he would be what people think Rudy gobert is, dominant paint protector who heavily struggles to switch and defend against speed. Also his limited vertical makes me feel like he can give up lobs or boards against the elite athletes but idk. He’s more of an elite bench 5 to me, but I can see him becoming a serviceable starter
@@sportgeek2028 compare the way he moves on the perimeter or when he’s guarding in space to someone like porzingis, gobert, wemby, lively etc. they’re all much more explosive. Not that he isn’t for his size, just that NBA Players are all athletic demons compared to college
I think he’s a late lottery at best unless a team fits perfectly with him. He could go late 1st round because centers aren’t as valuable as they once were. He’s like Zubach, Kessler
Idk man. His lack of being a pick and roll threat leaves him where on offense? Plus a lack of endurance/ physicality I worry about him being as effective as people project him to be.
I'm so much lower on Clingan than consensus. I see a lot of >6'5" guards trying to bump him off his spot and failing miserably, which lead to T/O's, blocks, and steals. Dude's a brick shit house. He was "the immovable object" to most drivers on the PNR. That said, guys in the NBA are going to succeed at bumping him off his spot where others failed. In that scenario, i'm sure he will still be a great defender and ideal drop big but nowhere to the prolific extent that some seem to think. Jaylen Brown or Anthony Edwards going right into his chest with a full head of steam is no fun and I'm not sure how effective he is once he realizes, despite his size and strength, it's not enough for NBA level wings.
Not enough people talk about how Clingan played 22.5 mpg last year while Edey played 32 mpg and was his team's focal point on offense. I don't hate Clingan, as he does still have an amazing standing reach and great defensive instincts, but it feels bizarre for people to openly worry about Edey's conditioning and stamina but not Clingan's, when all available data indicates Edey's remarkably well-conditioned given his size, far moreso than Clingan.
Reacts faster/better on defense, more promising passer, two years younger. I say "reacts" because Edey actually put up better speed numbers at the combine, he's just slower by eye out there a lot of the time. Could be an experience thing as he started basketball late.
If Clingan is projected as top 3 then this draft is weak. I see Dereck Lively having more upside than Clingan and he wasn't even picked top 10. Players like Doncic is gonna feast on his defense because who always goes drop coverage. He should be developing his outside shooting as early as he can because his offense is so limited.
Edey scored higher on all agility tests, is a superior scorer, yet this kid is rated higher in the lottery? Clingan is going to be the bust of the lottery. He’s nowhere near that good.
