  • Final instalment of my wind spinner project, didn't quite turn out how I thought but with a bit of tweaking it should work fine... #GaryHuston #Blacksmithing #Farrier #ASMR #Horseshoeing #Fabrication #Ironwork #Hoofcare #welder #repairs #horse #farriery #engineering

Fabulous !! Thanks so much for sharing. There's loads on here for buying spinners but not so much on making them. I love yours and am off to have a go.... Small scale to start with !

Super tutorial, learnt a lot and just adds to the fact that I need to learn to weld!

Fantastic. I was so impressed that I made one myself. I also used closed bearings but didn't have a problem with them. I did however have a problem with balancing each side. I tried to add weld to the hub to balance it nut that didn't work so I cut some strips of copper and rolled them around the blade end of the stems. works perfectly. Thank you for the inspiration.

GART - make sure you use flip down (clear) hood - and rinse hands in water right after using die grinder -- those very small filings are kick ass when embeded in fingers -hands -eyes- i learned from experience--- great job as always

I have made bearings like that work quite well by removing the end caps and washing out the grease with wd40. They spin extremely easy after that.

I've used bearing like that and came up with the same result.
I've found they need a push fit, or even a slip fit with a bit of locktite. Just the small amount of force you tapped them in with will tighten the races up and they bind.
Ask me how I know HAHA.

should use that drilling tapping paste on your die grinder. keeps sharp much longer at cuts smoother

If you are so inclined, there is PMC in bronze, and you can sculpt parts like clay. It comes in other metals, and is fun to use.

HI,Nice work. Just wondering what type of bearing you used?

    • @garyhuston
      @garyhuston  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Nothing special, just went to my local bearing supplies and asked for some that would roughly fit the tube I was using with a 16mm center so I didn't need to do too much machining. They were about 1/2" wide.

Just a note; I noticed that you used sealed bearings. Try using "shielded" bearings rather than "sealed" bearings on your next wind spinner. Shielded bearings have a "Z" after the bearing number. Sealed bearings have a "RS". Waaaay less drag with shielded bearings...a slight breeze will start the spinner spinning.

Sorry to say it will not turn easily. First off wrong kind of bearings. Sealed bearings have to much friction. Second it looks like the bearing housing is to tight. Bearings don’t need to be hammered in. Just lightly press them in. I am sure by now that you have figured this out. It would take a hurricane to turn it. Also you need to use a flanged bearing with shaft collars to hold it in place. Very nice wind spinner though. Get these problems figured out and you will be well on your way. Good luck.

If you see how old this video is and it has been spinning away fine in all but the mildest of winds, no maintenance at all!

Gary Huston nice, would love to see a video of it outside on a pole turning. Can you do a years later follow up video?

So after all this viewing of 3 videos, we still don't get to see a wind spinner? Just an attractive copper sculpture! False advertising.
