If you were together but now you're not, then something wasn't right. Why would someone want to go back into a flawed relationship. The only logical step is to seek a new relationship that is different. Not sure that's possible with an ex, if it is then it'd probably happen years later.

What you are saying makes sence, but what is if the ex worked up to the breakup over months if not years? And just at day x broke up.
And what about if there is something still between them. Like children or pets? No contact is a problem at that moment.
