I got this camera in Key West, when it first came out. In a small motorboat I went about five miles off the coast and captured thunderheads coming down the Keys - my most breathtaking photos ever! I still have it. It quickly burns through four AA batteries - rechargeable batteries even faster! The zoom still impresses. At the time 2007, 8 mega pixels was mega!
Been going through my basement and found one of these cameras in prime condition from years ago. Can’t wait to learn more about how to use it professionally! Right now the only things I understand is the zoom and the shutter.
I recently purchased this camera at my local pawnshop, because I broke my phone's camera. And I have been learning the basics, but man do your photos look so beautiful with such an old piece of tech. I was worried for so cheap that it wouldn't do so well. However, after seeing what you've done with it I'm hoping can use this ole gal to capture beautiful pictures of my family and our moments.
One great thing about those ccd bridge cameras is there sync-speed. My can sync it's flash up to 1/4000 (max shutter speed), and you can ad an external flash (Fuji Finepix HS 10).
I recently found this camera in a box that my parents had but it doesn't seem to work. I have replaced the AA batteries but i haven't been able turn it on any tips that i should do?
If your Canon PowerShot S5 IS won't turn on, you can try these steps: Check the batteries: Make sure the batteries are fully charged and inserted correctly. You can clean the battery terminals with a cotton swab if they are dirty. Check the memory card cover: Make sure the memory card cover is securely closed. Turn the camera off and on: Turning the camera off and on again can sometimes fix the issue. Press and hold the button: then turn on the power. Turn on with the LCD monitor closed: You can turn the camera on even if the LCD monitor is closed.
Thats why I loved the early Fuji Bridge Cameras, that film-look even without using any of the included emulators. Thats also why I loved putting old film Pentax lenses on my Samsung G10 back in the day before anybody was doing it.
I just picked one of these up in great shape for $40 ( October 2024 ) and I am seriously impressed by the quality and color coming out of this little thing, especially at only 8MP! It's a really fun little walk around rig and everything looks great straight out of camera. The photos coming out of it are very film like and the dynamic range on this little beauty would certainly rival some of my more modern cameras. It's really quite impressive for what it is and it has earned a permanent spot in my collection of active shooters. If you find one of these for anything under $100 I wouldn't even hesitate!

great video! how are you getting your images onto your computer? I have mine plugged in through the digital port to my laptops usb, and its not being detected.
The Canon PowerShot S5 IS has a non-interchangeable lens..in other words you cannot take the lens off... but there is no need to because.. its 12x optically stabilized zoom lens, delivers an equivalent range of 36-432mm with a focal ratio of f2. 7-3.5; the actual focal length is 6-72mm and I counted 20 steps when zooming from wide angle to telephoto without any lurching.

I like most his Q&A's and 'Notes on photography'. I see you like Rogers channel 'Shoot film like a boss' too. I am an amateur in Germany (originally from The Netherlands) still shooting BW on film with manual cameras and digital with compacts and old cameras. My first DSLR Sigma SD10 was not so good however and I sold it again, only to wait untill 2020 to buy a 2012 Lumix G2 which is quite reasonable.
Been wanting to shoot some videos for skating and my dad handed down this camera to me, do you think it’d be possible to put on any wide angle/fish eye lens onto this camera?

I have two option canon powershot sx20 is or canon powershot s5 is, which one is better ? do you have any suggestion I am kinda new on digital cameras. Thank you. If you don't have a camera, but you do have a smartphone with a camera, use that. When I photographed cars for a showroom, we had 3 rules 1) waxed car 2) location had to be beautiful like in front of a mansion 3) in the late late afternoon with the cars parking lights on

We had to photograph the cars A) on a tripod no exceptions B) we had to have the lens not at eye level but lower..level with the top of the dash C) powerful flash and or lights D) f11 and the same shot wide open f1 8 E) whatever part of yhe car is closest to the lens that is where we focused
I transferred them by... I load the photos to my computer, then send myself an email iwith the photos attached, then I open the email on my cellphone and save the pics to my photos in the phone.

With ISO set to 80 and with lots of light, the image color and clarity blew my mind. The 435mm optical zoom is also fantastic.

How do I connect a microphone to Canon S5IS
It has a built in microphone, and you cannot plug in an external microphone.

Put the memory card from the camera into a usb card reader, then plug the usb card reader into the pc and easily upload photos into pc.
