Thanks I just picked one up. Been splitting with 3 different homemade splitters for 45 years. I enjoy running the DR every night for 45 MIN. IT REALLY Makes a pile of wood in a hurry.
John, I want to thank you for taking time to make and post these videos. After having my DR Kinetic for years, it stopped being able to "Bust" the log on first strike. Your video illustrates the fine tuning and what I need to do to make it work like it did when first bought. Thanks for your efforts. I has helped this old man out.
#1 Mine did good until about the 3rd year. Where I was cutting my wood at a determined length, the rack and pinion gear was worn, it began to slip. Chewing at the teeth. I had to add a piece of 2 x 4 in front of the ram. It was worn out before it's time. I ended up adjusting the rollers on top of the rack so it wouldn't detent to engaged, because you had to shut it off if you had a hung log. And fight with it trying to get it unwedged. Now I simply hold the engage bar forward until the piece is split. I had bungee cord the safety hand within the first couple of hours of use. #2 If it wouldn't split the wood because it was too hard, it would jam and begin burning up the belt before you could get to the little kill switch on the engine. I installed one on top of the machine. A simple snap off kill button. It is a fast splitter, but it needs improvement. I'm going to install a throttle cable to speed up the engine when you pull the lever, and install a clutch on the engine. This will prevent burning up of the belt. The splitter will NOT split wood that has knots. You're wasting your time if you try. I have ordered a rack and pinion gear set now. The modifications will be done before splitting any more wood. Not sold on it completely.
You can pull the rack out and push the handle forward to lock in place. I also had to adjust the cam that pushes the rack onto the pinion, mine went down too far, overtravalling past its lowest position which caused a lot of chatter. Adjusting it so it went down as far a possibil but not over traveling made a huge difference in the smoothness of operation. You can also remove the safety handle by just taking a couple bolts out, first mod I made to my K22.
i run my kinetic slitter with semi loose belts , this way it protects my splitter from breakages , like pinion teeth snapping , i have a 34 ton kinetic splitter , i only run it at about half pace and it splits anything , mine is a forest west , way better and faster than my hydraulic splitter , which is now retired for being to slow
Do you know if the weight of the flywheels is stamped on the metal somewhere? I’m looking to buy a used one locally but the seller can’t tell if it’s 75s or 55’s
Thanks for the great video, John. How about if you keep getting big splinters of wood, when splitting, under the ram? Looks like I will have to remove the front of the ram to get it out..

Nice work John- I can use the inner workings videos to get my used K22 working as advertised. Looking forward to seeing that soon!

Bloody well done, John, they should give you a bonus splitter!

thats a non issue with my machine. Just keep it clear and brush away debris every so often to keep smooth operation
John- Is the DR still holding strong since your purchase? How many cords have you gon through? I've been torn between it and the Original Super Split.
