The contrast of the melodies each one of them is playing, and how they compliment each other. Vash bringing light to Nai's dark and he not wanting it. But you see him as a grown up and you can't help feel he miss having him on his side.
I think a little more detail to think about is that Vash actually forces him to play higher up while he takes his original position for him on the seat, so to say (lighter or darker becomes a bit confusing here)
I'm not sure if I am correct in this notion, but... when Nai is first playing, it's very slow, almost simplistic. But Nai is smiling. Vash sidles up, and introduces a much more complex and layered theme, and grins innocently at his brother, as if he's thinking that they make something better by working together, but Nai only sees that Vash is playing "better". And even when it goes back to the pubescent Knives, Knives is now only repeating what Vash instinctively created.
I feel like that also goes to show that Nai thinks that you can only choose one side, its simply to him, good or bad. but vash sees that you can be both making it more of a complex thought that Nai doesnt like
I have to disagree to an extent. When Vash jumps in, he plays a very simple scale with the same six keys which clashes in tone to Nai's more complicated piece; however, Vash seems to be content with this while Nai is annoyed by it's simplicity. To me, it's as if Nai is taking issue with Vash's innocence and naivety.
Stampede has outdone the original and I say that as someone who watches it 98. This is just on a different level especially how emotional you feel between the brothers. The original Knives were portrayed as pure evil psychopath.

This is probably the most sympathetic Nai has been in the anime. It's somber, how he bot only remembers the melody his brother added, but now plays it back flawlessly, as if in mourning, and loving memory of Vash. It's something a human would do-- something Nai detests.
I think what I love about this scene is that in the beginning, you can see the personalities of the two brothers kind of clashing in their playing. Vash having a more playful tune that opposes Nai's graceful one. And then it cuts to Millions Knives playing the song on his own, even playing Vash's part, signifying how Millions Knives has taken things into his own hands, and will carry out his pursuit of paradise and revenge with or without Vash "playing along with him". ...bro the season finale got me in SHAMBLES I can't wait for the next seasonhfsjdhf 😭😭😭
The way Nai's piece starts off so peaceful and serene before Vash starts playing with him, and the way their two parts start off clashing, only for them to harmonize once the twins look each other and begin making Knives' theme... I swear every time I come back to this scene I get more and more emotional over it. I could probably go on for hours on the relationship between the twins and how it's conveyed throughout the show, it's marvelous.
Reading the comments I kinda disagree. In my opinion Nai is looking back at this happily , Nai has been shown not to show much emotion when he was younger and he only really showed if any around Vash even in his adulthood he only ever breaks face around Vash. If he didn’t care about Vash or hated him he wouldn’t keep going out of his way to try to convince Vash to join his side. Although be it later forcefully he still wants Vash to be with him.
Idk what you're opposing but I completely agree, however I interpreted the way he plays in the future as him trying to play both his and vash's part the feeling I got was loneliness. Seeing as how Vash doesn't want to play a part in his plan he's resigned to "fine I'll guess I'll do it myself".
POV you’re trying to play piano when your little twin bro comes and ruins your melancholic tune with his happy go lucky attitude but it doesn’t matter anymore because now that you are grown up you can reach across the keyboard to play both parts so you don’t need him anymore. You don’t need him. You ~~don’t~~ need him. You can play the song on your own now … but at what cost? What a great scene, conveying so much about their relationship and Nai’s conviction in such a short clip. ❤❤❤
I love this scene so much it’s definitely one of my favourites in the show (so far) it’s just - their relationship is so complex, the disagreements but still loving each other as brothers, the tragedy!! I love it it’s so well-written and compelling. Also the song SLAPS
This is such a beautiful arrangement. I’m so glad they put it on TH-cam so I don’t need to keep rewinding Hulu. I love the story but the score (evening the op grew on me) has me completely gripped
Honestly, I love the difference in Vash and Nai's melodies when played together. It might clashing at first, but I think it's just because they feel like they're in different time signatures. None of the notes really clashed. I'm just surprised that these two melodies work so well to the point that they're not clashing.
There are many great comments already made about this little scene. I also want to add another thing I thought about while watching it: Nai seemed pretty content playing on his own and I imagine him just having very low social batteries so he needs to have a lot of alone-time (maybe even having some autistic signs here). Playing the piano is his time to recharge. And then Vash comes in and it is just exhausting to deal with someone right now, but ofc he lets him (a, because it’s his brother and he gets away with a lot and b, because it is even more exhausting to argue right now). But then they play together and though it clashes at first they manage to create a great melody, so either Nai is trying to prove that he still can keep up with Vashs melody-changes or he really just feels „charged up“ by his brothers presence.
@Marucaco while it may be similar, it is not memory of piano. As that is a variation of millions knives. This is more closely a piano version of millions knives itself.

You can love someone but still not understand them or foster a healthy relationship with them. The tragedy is in that Knives loves him so damn much but genuinely can't fully connect with him anymore. He wants that connection back even if he has to break him down into something he can fully control.
I kinda don't get Knives' emotion when Vash joins him at the piano. Is he irritated? If so, then why? I don't think they've had a beef when they were kids. But also Knives pointing out during their birthday that Vash needs to eat and sleep, unlike him... Maybe he even then felt his superiority to VAsh or something? Vash is more human than Nai; as you highlighted, Nai singles out that Vash needs to eat and sleep, much like a human must. Once Vash joins, it is not just simplistic keys anymore. It is a combination of a hopeful yet melancholic tone--like humans, we can't be defined as only good or bad, this or that, we're complex. And it is at the root of the issue Nai is dealing with: are humans evil monsters who don't care at all for plants or are they complex beings (capable of emotion and reason to the same extent Nai is) resorting to what's left for them to survive in Noman's Land (or any planet, at this point )? I think Nai assumes he is superior to Vash, but I also think he doesn't understand why Vash doesn't care for that. Vash, in fact, welcomes it with his whole heart. So I feel like it's a mixture of Nai feeling angry that Vash is insistent on a humane vision but also hesitant (?) that he will have to recognize that humans are more than just parasites (since he sees humans as murderers of plants).
