Thank you! I did a lot of reading and research and basically designed the whole layout around my idea of a good yard, and incorporated my existing shelf layout, which became Manchester and gets its own local out of the yard. Not shown in this video but my first video features Manchester.
@@johnarthur6302 oh ok thats cool, well it definitely shows your level of dedication and artistic ability. We are blown away. We are working on getting into the scenery on our layout and we can only hope that it comes out this well done.
nice vid good ops... i think folks get so wrapped up in other areas of their model railroad they forget to actually test out the track plan... i put some rail down (not glued down only temp rail) and had some ops sessions... was surprised to find that their were some areas of my track plan and ops that i didn't like... i ended up changing some customers and some planned (but not purchased) buildings... glad i tested the track plan BEFORE i fully committed to it
yes! Is it operating how you intended? Are there any problem sections of track? I found examples of both operating mine early on - I extended a spur, added a crossover, replace a couple bad turnouts - all before doing any scenery that would have been extra work to fix.
John, that looks like a whole bunch of fun and I can't wait until I get to the point of being able to run ops. One comment I did hear you make was assigning cabooses to locomotives. I thought you would find this info very helpful that back in the time Era your running, cabooses were assigned to specific conductors as that was their office. Anyways, the ops session was fun to watch and thanks for sharing! - Jason
That’s a good point - I think what I should be doing with those turns is moving the caboose from the inbound to the outbound train- at least for the turn from across town. Thanks Jason!
Make sure you get that break test in.. Think of that poor conductor that shows up to his next location short some cars... No Oreo cookies for you at the 2 hour break.
The brake test is brilliant. Thank you for sharing that! It’s especially useful when one guy is the yard master, road engineer, both conductors, and videographer. Haha!
hello John... i'm a bit curious are you going to put structure at the power plant & warehouse that you switched out first??? great video... love op sessions.. can't wait to get back to it on my layout... thx 4 sharing.. vinny
Hey Vinny - I sure am. Probably a scratch build and or kit bash on the power plant- more of a flat. Same for the warehouse. I’m working right to left so after the field and creek, that’s where I’m headed. I’ll paint and ballast yard track and extend the photo backdrop behind it too, first.
Always love watching operations videos, hope to see some video from when your dad comes to operate. You have a very well thought out ops scheme. I have always wonder with CC how you determine the cars that go in the train. I think I'm starting to understand it. I'm using JMRI to just generate switch lists. Congrats on crossing over 200 subs.
My dad is a little camera shy, so I probably won’t get too much filmed. Appreciate your comments on the scheme. As for assigning cars to new trains, i do that in staging. Once a car leaves the layout back into staging, i recycle it, allow it to be teleported, etc. I literally put in the storage shelf and it’s fair game for any other job requiring the car type.
It is in a room over a garage. It's got knee walls which forced me to use a roughly 32" height, and a narrow entrance that's unusable for the layout. Overall, the layout sits in a 10' x 14' area, with the knee walls along each 10 foot side.
Good job man!!! Thumbs up!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Love the session. Well designed yard you have there as well.
Glad you liked it! My design philosophy was to build the layout around the yard, rather than fit the yard into the layout.
Awesome Shirt! That's a nice yard, love all those switches. Your scenery is masterfully done, very impressed.

great look at your yard ops and turn. The locomotives sound great and that scenery is just fantastic. Cheers Rob
Thank you, Rob!
Great ops! Layout looks fantastic, subbed!
Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed it!
Very nice switching
Thank you!
thank you for detail operation video on your detail layout
good luck for further plan your detail layout
Thank you!!
Good stuff. You’re inspiring me to do a similar type of video of my layout. Congrats on the milestone. Great work.
Fred Wild inspired me to operate again, if you do one, you’ll likely pass it on to another modeler. Do it! :)
Enjoyed the video a lot, makes me want to get more US trains, cheers from Yorkshire UK...Mal
Thank you for watching and commenting! Cheers from Virginia, USA!

John that is a great Ops session 👍🏼👍🏼. Can’t wait for the Covid mess to get behind us so I can see it live 😄
Thanks Bill! We will get there!

Thank you Allen - There will definitely be more!

Room sized layout .. that's one big room ...

@@johnarthur6302 very nice . I'm working off 8ft x 2ft
Honestly if it works you on uncoupling then you did it right
Thanks Andy - that's a very simple way to put it, but I like it!
John some people complicate things with trying to hard, our hobby is supposed to give all of us, modelers satisfaction through having fun,
I would fire the engineer for exceeding the yard speed limit. :D
Haha! Some serious acceleration out of that Baldwin, too.
😊
Thank you!
