I think this game highlights how valuable Trent passing is when the midfield is locked up, countless times quansah was left on the ball at RB and he just played square to Gomez, this game also highlights the importance of Konate his recovery pace and ability to channel defends stops allot of the oppositions attack

Our style of play needs two full backs, not a centre back at full back, we would have had much better balance and shape in attack, posession and defending. Endo over Quansah or Gomez would have worked better, Slot can't start a centre back again at full back, he should start Endo

thats not it really the problem is that when you put a cb into rb its a recipe for disaster cause the fullback is supposed to be good on the ball to help the D to get out of pressure

Newcastle fan here. This was my favorite game I've watched this season. We really gave you guys hell for 70 minutes, then we collapsed. This is a frequent problem for Eddie's intense pressing game. Between the 70th and 90th minute we couldn't get out of our box! It was so frustrating. Salah and Trent combined brilliantly in the second half. Nunez is a good and exciting player, but he is a bit dumb. Curtis Jones was REALLY good, all over the pitch, doing a lot of quiet work to give some kind of shape. Salah's touch and turn for the 3rd goal was simply sensational, he is, the best player in the world right now.

This game brought me vibes from Liverpool's last season, disaster class from our defense (Gomez & Quansah) and silly mistakes from our keeper. Seriously we will not win a thing if we don't change the mentality, this game is a prove that some players are not ready for a top level challenge. In the other hand, fantastic game from Moh Salah, Trent and Maca. We should have won this game but we still 7 points ahead so let's keep supporting and not crucify our players.

Few key points to take from this game
1.) Nunez is great at pressing for Salah/Gakpo, but if the output of the two wingers aren't good, what's the point? He's a winger, not a striker and we need to play a false 9.
2.) Kelleher is class, but he's still inexperienced at the top level. He's an amazing keeper, but he's a bit too old to "learn the craft" now. He cost us the 2 points, but he was class aginst Madrid and City. Win some, lose some. Can't wait for Allison
3.) We NEED a new LB, Robbo is done, not Mr Consistant anymore. Need a rotate option for Grav as well, he was so tired today.
4.) Quansah is a great RB, if we didn't need a RB that steps in and plays the ball to forwards.

There's 5 players who I've defended passionately against our own fans over the last 2 seasons. I've defended the quality of this 5 and been proven right, mostly.
I've played the "I told you so" card (jokingly) after being proven right this season on 4 of them, pulling up those who called me clueless/stick to fifa/take up another sport etc etc. Pretty fun being right👀🤣
That 4 is Jones, Gravenberch, Gakpo, and Salah. I've backed all 4 and dished out the I told you so to everyone that told me I was clueless. The amount of arguments telling me none of them would be good enough this season is embarrassing.
Anyway.. that being said, in the interest of full transparency, I need to hold my hands up and admit I was wrong on 1 of the 5 players.
Darwin Nunez. I was convinced he would click and start turning all those marginal misses into goals and explode, but I was wrong. I've defended him since he joined, but he just isn't good enough.
He does some things brilliantly, his passion and desire is infectious, his energy and pressing are amazing.
However, if Liverpool had a finisher like Gyokeres they'd be miles clear by now. He's just far too rash in front of goal, zero composure and unfortunately it's just who he is.

I don’t think we underestimated Newcastle. Arsenal lost to NC, mancity drew to NC. We don’t have a good striker in Nunez. Even during Firmino when he connected Mane and Salah, he would still score from time to time, and still work very hard. But Darwin Nunez can’t be a top finisher. He should not be our striker. I think salah Gakpo Diaz is a more solid combination and they still press very well. Nunez out!

  • @FakhruddinS
    @FakhruddinS 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    So many disappointing things.
    - Slot's decision to play quansah at rb in the first half was weird but semi-justified after man city I guess. Not taking him out of that position at half time however, was irresponsible and baffling. If his job was to just stay put, whatever. What is Quansah doing being an inverted full back.
    - Gravenberch had his worst game for us yet. His pirouette wasn't working and he kept losing the ball under pressure. What was disappointing was when he lost the ball and kind of just jogged back. And this was done multiple times. One particular moment was when he lost the ball and Curtis jones who was further forward got back faster than him and even made it so that the Newcastle player couldn't just drive in a straight line.
    - The cb's actually played a decent game in terms of blocks, interceptions, etc.. but OH MY DAYS, somehow JOE GOMEZ and VIRGIL VAN DIJK just forgot how to keep a line. I understand having a high line is difficult but we were beat one too many times today.
    - Nunez's finishing was again disappointing.
    - Kelleher fault for two goals. Look, if this was Kelleher last year, where we didn't expect much from him, he did as expected. That gordon goal was expected from a back up and you're gonna make some mistakes like the free kick which led to Schar's goal. But he is not supposed to be a backup. He is supposed to be a top 5 pl gk and has shown that for the last few weeks. So what happened today was very disappointing

His other aspects of the game is excellent but the end product he can't produce consistently.

A thing that frustrates me with refs is that when Salah is holding off a player he gets fouled so often and the refs hardly ever give it. Thanks Laurence, I've been enjoying your reviews after coming across the channel a few weeks ago.
I think Newcastle's 4-5-1 suffocated our midfield in the first half and although Jones scored the first equaliser he doesn't have the same physicality that was probably needed that Szob provides against the Newcastle midfield.
Disappointing with Kelleher letting the ball go over his head but Trent also let Schar go instead of staying with him, obviously Trent thought that Kelleher would do something but Schar took the chance that the ball still comes his way on got his reward.

Good point for us on the back of dominant performances at home against RM and MC. Good also for squad players to get tough match action. 3 points on Saturday would help put this game into context. Fed up with the way Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle grapple players then fall down at the slightest touch and get given fouls and we get yellow cards yet doesn't happen the other way round.

We were really missing Trent and Konate this game. Trent was a fantastic outlet to a very physical Newcastle midfield and Konate would’ve had much more composure on the ball and against a dynamic forward like isak. Darwin was terrible today as well, missing some big chances and constantly misplacing passes, but nonetheless we scored 3, and really shouldn’t have conceded 3 goals. Kelleher prob should’ve done better on Gordon’s goal and made a big mistake for the 3rd. Overall, a point at St James isn’t terrible, and thank god we have the cushion to allow it, but now we have to be fully focused for the weekend and keep getting 3 points, and nobody will catch us up then

I feel your frustration and i also feel you're maybe trying to read too much into it. Let me elaborate, a drop in points was going to happen any way, we were on a great great run of wins, it was statistically improbable to keep that run.
Kelleher made a few mistakes, especially that 3rd goal, he was out of it, do I want to lynch him, hell now. he saved Gomez after a mistake lead to 1 v 1 and he did very well since Allison was injured and proved his worth many times over.
Gomez wasn't at his best, its not the first time we've seen that, and i think that's one of the reasons he is not 1st choice CB; Jarell was playing out of position in a big match, this one is on Arne, he should have started Trent and kept the Jarell sub late in 2nd half, granted Jarell wasn't all that bad in full back throughout the game. Maybe Arne was managing rotations, maybe he felt he was going to make a "smart" decision.
Your comments on our midfield were spot on, can't really have a different opinion there, they did well at the end, however what you closed the video on, I vehemently reject, Mo would never think that its a very negative take; and i believe the LFC culture within the club is against that sentiment. I remember a game vs hotspurs a few seasons back, i think it ended 2-2 where the team was very poor an Mo was one of the few good performers during that match, bailed them out; never has he shown any sign that he carried that negative sentiment within him, I think its a very morbid way of looking at it, probably your frustration at the match lead you to that.
Afterall its a draw away against a really good opposition.

This is why some fans who have slagged Klopp off since Slot came need to realise injuries will affect results. We were decimated at times last season, far worse than the current situation, and if you are having to rely on the same players playing 3 games a week they will struggle. Gravenberch looked dead on his feet for a start. Mac Allister is suspended now which is a blow. Jota is always a miss, I have said time and again Nunez isn't good enough to start. Him coming off the bench last season was the difference there. Everton will be confident after yesterday so we need to sort the defence.

  • @ghamdifirst

I don't agree with this Loz. It's not mostly on the players. It was very obvious that they were attacking our right hand side and the coordination between Quansah and Gomez was very poor. I was half expecting Slot to sub one of them off in the first half. I think he should have kept Quansah as a CB and Gomez as a RB, both players would've been more comfortable. As for the midfield it seemed to me that our midfielders kept getting themselves right in the middle of their packed midblock which was just a recipe for misplaced passes or easy pressures from their team. I do think Slot noticed all this, but waiting until halftime or 60 minutes in to address it was tardy and we may have been down a few goals by then. All in all, that is (hopefully) going to be one of the hardest matches we play all season, I'm glad we got out with a point.

I don’t see what the issue is with acknowledging that Trent and Kelleher reacted poorly to that cross. It’s not to pile on them or send abuse their way but that’s quite literally the facts of what happened. I don’t think they’re shit now because of that one mistake/miscommunication, but it’s not unreasonable to say that if Kelleher catches that or that if Trent follows Schar, that we likely leave St. James’ with 3 points. But like you said, my hope is that they follow up this game with a run like they did after losing to Forest.

He's been amazing filling in for alisson but that shouldn't mean we can't criticize him over his performance. Same for slot's decision to play quansah at right back, I don't blame quansah.

Referee put us at such a disadvantage giving out three cards before half time including two on our pivots, neutering their tackling from then on
To be fair, we’ve not faced a side as aggressive as Newcastle were tonight and fair play to them, they defended really well in their defensive third in the first half. We were toothless in the press throughout, and let them run through our midfield mostly unchallenged (again probably due to the cards and maybe a bit of fatigue)
Newcastle are the absolute worst of the worst though. Don’t think I’ve ever seen a team dive to ground against Liverpool more than they did tonight and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a referee stupid enough to fall for most of it until Andy Madley. 🤡 of a ref
