Love MP, and I'm trying to forcefully drag all of my friends into the state of love that I am in for their music. This video was grand, gonna check out some of your music next!
This was a beautiful synopsis of the band and the album. I enjoyed your personality, your whit, and your perspective. Thank you for sharing your love of this band. It shows in the dedication that clearly went into the making of this video.
Wonderful essay. But did you know about the unreleased bonus track on that album, Cult of Tuna? It criticises the religious influence on war. It also helps that it's also a banger.
A Boat on the Sea was my most played album last year after first hearing Captain Awkward on my Spotify's discover weekly playlist. I instantly became hooked, and for a solid few months, I listened to the album in its entirety while I did my workout routine. This video was a great analysis on themes that while listening, I considered but never gave much attention to.
i just found this video, and man im soooo glad someone else has the same attraction to this band.. the song writing is, to me, some of the best of arrangements thats are catchy af, and everything is just fresh from the main stream bs that most people slober over. ive been so hooked on the stranger and the high tide ep. i love MP. i cant stop listening. your singing sounds alot like sondre!! lol the clip you sang for captain, spot fkin on. bless you my friend.
My lord, excellent video. I love this band. The firt time I listened to them was by accident after listenning Blackbox (the last Major Parkinson's single at that time) and I completely loved it. Also I hightly recomend Major Parkinson, Sondre Skollevoll plays on the last two albums.
I loved this a lot! your a capella of Isn't It Easy gave me chills. and I can't believe for all the times I've repeatedly listened to this album, I've never consciously noticed that mirroring between that song and Hocus Pocus. I do think the lyrics across the album can be better interpretated as a single narrative voice moving through a single story, but I guess I'll just have to make my own video essay lol. I really appreciate all the effort that went into this and I'm glad to see one of the best albums of all time get some recognition outside my household.
just as a footnote, I do fully agree with your political interpretation of the album. the deep anti imperialist themes are one reason I love it so much
thank you for writing a video that actually gives a boat on the sea the credit it deserves!!! i definitely got a lot out of your analysis (many things i hadnt put together!). it lines up with my own read pretty closely. i do have some additions i think you might appreciate. i am very not a content creator but i hope a lengthy youtube comment essay wont be amiss. if i ever write it ill be back to share! its so cool you got to speak directly with sondre. thanks again for sharing this!!! it made me feel so less alone with the overwhelming wonder, catharsis, and deep grief i feel when i listen to a boat on the sea.
Dude, this guy fucking gets it! I appreciate your appreciation so much, as well as your attention to detail. Phenomenal video, I could’ve watched for two more hours
Surprised you didn't highlight the change-up of "Started to see" and "Staaaaar-ted to see" in Captain Awkward, but I'm guessing you love it as much as I do! Love your takes, man! Also, if you don't already know them, I imagine you'd love A.C.T th-cam.com/video/T8HSFc33Bp8/w-d-xo.html
Congrats on completing this project! The definition of "butt rock" seems very subjective, like it's not "butt rock" unless the person calling it that finds the music and lyrics to be "watered down" based on their own artistic taste. I wouldn't call Headstrong "butt rock" by that definition because I like the song. Is it a term being used (or misused) by people who are just looking for a justifiable name for music they feel is overplayed or oversold? Because at that point they're basically just throwing stones because they don't get why something is popular. It seems paradoxical to apply the label "Beautiful Butt Rock" to music you get so much out of that you completed a 90 minute video essay on it!
You assume that I don’t like Butt Rock! I like all of the songs I stuck in there as examples. The criticism I will hold to is the corporate nature of some of it. Radio play is not a meritocracy and things get popular because a company markets them. Every lever of the music industry is heavily controlled by 1-3 companies. Some bands are created from wholecloth with the express purpose of being a sales gimmick. A billboard in band form. The point of that section is to talk to people who are predisposed to discount music with rock elements that remind them of “Butt Rock”. I LOVE driven guitars and a baritone vocalist, and I’m annoyed by who gets to monopolize their popular use.
I'm so devastated that they lost their talented drummer in a car accident last year. But I'm really looking forward to the next album, Pachinko.
A Boat On The Sea is legit one of my top-five favorite albums of all time. Absolute goddamn genius.

One of the best YT-videos I’ve seen! Fantastic mediation og storytelling! My love for Moron Police grew even more. ❤
Your Sondre Skollevoll impression is so spot on that I had an existential crisis over it (I used to think I could imitate him decently)
