“Get Back” by The Beatles - How To Play John Lennon’s Part

  • Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard about Peter Jackson’s documentary “The Beatles: Get Back” that was released on Disney+ in late 2021. The documentary takes a look at the life of The Beatles towards the end of their incredible run as a group. In this lesson, Ayla Tesler-Mabe breaks down John Lennon’s part from the title track “Get Back”.
Initially, this song was a social commentary, but it eventually turned into the song we all now know and love. The interesting thing about “Get Back” is that John Lennon actually played the lead guitar part instead of George Harrison giving it a totally different feel from other songs by The Beatles.

    About Ayla Tesler-Mabe:
Ayla has been making waves in the world of guitar playing as a professional guitarist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and composer, since the early age of 14. After only been playing for two years, her first TH-cam video (a rendition of John Mayall’s “Hideaway”) put her on the map and kickstarted her music career. She has since been featured in Rolling Stone magazine, become a member of the Ernie Ball and Fender family of artists, and earned various Berklee College of Music scholarships. Musically, Ayla finds great pleasure in exploring the numerous avenues available to her through various styles of music, as seen through her work with Calpurnia and Ludic.

John’s rhythm playing is part of the key to his solo playing, his sense of timing and rhythm was unique even when soloing. His last solo bit in “The End” is another great example of using his aggressive rhythm style while soloing

@@M4TT4TT4CK it was interesting to see it in the context of a lead part, even if it was under forced circumstances with George quitting! I don’t know how much it’s been talked about, but I’m pretty sure John mostly stuck to rhythm out of a lack of confidence in being able to play lead.

Always loved the Beatles.. my mother was almost a hippie so as I was growing up the Beatles was always a staple song inside out home. To the point that I picked up the guitar and started to teach myself to play and I learned to play Beatle songs. Very detailed way of explaining the chords and progression of the song.

"Get Back" is my favorite Beatles song and John Lennon's solo is my #1 favorite guitar solo. You don't often hear John play lead and I love the simplicity and energy he puts into it. He also sounds like he's a lot of having fun playing this song. Great lesson. I've always wanted to learn how he played it and how to play it. Thank you for this.

    • @leekovalskyj9218

The detail you put into this lesson is remarkable!
Favourite Beatles song? Really? I remember laughing my head off when somebody asked me that question 50+ years ago. But, just for you, I'll pick one.
I absolutely love Abbey Road's side-two medley - from 'Sun King' to 'The End' (with or without 'Her Majesty'). I've always listened to the entire medley, rather than picking out any one snippet of it.
But, as said, just for you I will pick 'The End' as my all-time favourite piece of Beatles music. That's because this the one and only Beatles song (as far as I know) where Harrison, Lennon, and McCartney all play lead guitar lines. It's just so unique for that reason. And each of the three of them does a really good job of it.
By the way, "Her Majesty's 'a pretty nice girl", and so too are you, Ayla. Thanks for all you do!

Here is something that people always suspected, but the Documentary shows it very briefly. And that is, John is playing on a rare occasions a six string Fender Bass. And it is suspected he is also playing Bass with that Gender on George Harrison's song While My Guitar Gently Weeps. But what I found interesting after all these years is this. The time the Documentary is being filmed, roughly six weeks, The Beatles write two complete albums. Simply amazing.

I have watched the documentary, the best thing about it for me was seeing their creative process, them jamming to cover songs and "the finale" the rooftop concert which is my favorite concert of all time. Speaking of rooftop concerts, yesterday I watched a documentary "Fly Jefferson Airplane" and was surprised the band also did a rooftop concert. A year before the Beatles! Lasted only 7 minutes though before police showed up. :)

This is the best of the Get Back Lennon lessons out there. You really got the whole sound, just right to my ear. Those bends in the last solo part seem to go up to the major third, where in the original it sounds somewhere between the major and minor, a bit more bluesy. Great job!

Unless anyone was under a rock they all should know who you are. I watched you mature from a young kid guitar player to now a professional guitarist sharing your knowledge of guitar with us. Nice to see how you appreciate the Beatles. I got my first guitar after seeing the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. I never got to your level of skill. I think that's what intrigued me about seeing your videos when they show up in my related videos. The amount of skill you showed at the guitar at such a young age. Well this one you did on the rooftop session is great. If my memory serves correctly I believe this was their last time playing together....a farewell of sorts. Growing up with the Beatles was.....Amazing!
    Just like your guitar playing!
