In case anyone is curious, I looked it up & yes Charles Darwin (1809-1882) & Steve Irwin (1962-2006) did in fact own the same tortious. Harriet The Galapagos Tortoise was born in 1830, she was collected by Charles Darwin in 1835, she lived in England after Darwin died, she was later transported to Australia, & she died in the Beerwah, Australia Zoo under the ownership of Steve Irwin in 2006 at the age of 175.
Wow, thanks for the info! Learn something new day! 😊
@@wesleytwiggs7687 It's not.
damn, what a tortoise life
Remember when everybody just watched snl .fun fun times oh shit I don't have health insurance.
You have much time on your hands.
“Then kill him tough guy, you won’t.” And “because it was done to me.” Really brought me back to those Bill Hader game show sketches.
"you wont" really sells it 🤣
Agree….this cast is starting to catch that vibe, which is good
I had to replay that part because I couldn't stop laughing 😂
Yeah, but he doesnt have the same feeling to him the Bill Hader had. Not yet, anyways.
@@deannas2778 Seriously?
"Then kill him, tough guy. You won't." 😂 Longfellow is great as a game show host!
I Like To See Molly Kearney Tried
Yeah, he's giving Hader a run for his money in that regard.
@@yellowblanka6058 NO ONE is giving Hader a run for his money EVER
@@djshibascreamwrong. Longfellow is.
He's no Bill Hader. And never ever ever ever will be.
I enjoyed this because, yes, the Bill Hader comparisons are impossible to avoid, but Michael Longfellow adds his own personality quirks, more of an offbeat presence alongside the malevolence. The idea that he's just trying to get rid of this turtle he was forced to take as a child is a great concept.
When Longfellow does one of his WU characters, I get more of a Norm Macdonald vibe.
But, yes - doing game show host - definitely Bill Hader.
There's less malice than Hader, and more of a "I couldn't give a damn" vibe.
At the risk of being tortuous, I have to point out that you're turtle-y wrong
I feel like he's his own unique guy...but also, reminds me of a mixture of Norm MacDonald and Rob Lowe.
...but Bill Hader is funny...
That tortoise fact about Darwin and Irwin was actually pretty interesting.
It feels like one of the writers stumbled across that fact and thought, "I can make a sketch out of this"
That tortoise is the entire skit and 2nd best acting,,,
Longfellow actually did have a turtoise at age six. He sold it when he moved to New York.
@@chelsealindsay4821Probably. Working backwards is often how things are made
"It's YOUR tortoise?" *"NO. It's your tortoise."* had me rolling
I'll add to the kudos for Michael killing it as the host, but can I add how James absolutely NAILED the speech pattern of the typical game show announcer? Not surprising given his voice talent, but the cadence of each announcement - the loud and long first line followed by the fast talking description, then ending quickly.....I felt like I was home sick from school watching CBS daytime game shows. :)
SAME! It was weirdly, specifically, precisely accurate 😁
Big Double Dare or Legends of the Hidden Temple vibes
I loved this. Brought back so many memories, especially the overly intense joviality. The best part was "THREE CARS!!!"
Yeah he nailed it, really perfect. As good as will Ferrell or bill hader
tis a good setup for these 2
“3 cars.” Hahahahahaha!
Those 3 cars as a prize for the sketch used from Saturday Night Live are made by MAZDA.
"don't take your pick - take all three, it's three cars" was such a great line 😂 pretty sure there's nothing james can't do
Half expected them to be some weird money pit cars he was also trying to get rid of.
If that's true, he should try being funny sometime.
@@chonqmonk you must be great at parties
It’s free real estate!
That was the funniest line for no reason at all
"Why did you do this to me?"
"Because it was done to me" 😭
"Because it was done to me" is the reason for so many of this world's problems. 😔
I think that line reveals something about Michael Longfellow and his relationship with his divorced parents. He's revealed in several bits referring to the fact both his parents have remarried often, resulting in a collection of stepparents.
@@ronaldschild157 Put down the meth pipe. Eat a cheeseburger and sleep. You will thank me later...
@@ronaldschild157 and evidently he was also really given a tortoise at 6 yrs old... this guy is brilliant. Love his humor
@@ronaldschild157Like Christopher Titus (if you ever see his short-lived sitcom on FOX or hear any of his stand-up, he does talk about having a dad who was married and divorced five times. I think his mom -- who was mentally ill and emotionally manipulative -- only married twice, because her second husband was shot to death by her because he beat her up over not having dinner done when he got home from work). Longfellow's parents are just a tamer version of that.
@@canaisyoung3601 That sounds accurate - Longfellow's informed humor being a tamer version of Titus's. And I do remember Christopher Titus's show on Fox. I watched it frequently, although not every episode. Stacy Keach portrayed his dad. Titus also has a pretty active YT channel.
Loved how this turned out to be the one and only episode of the game show, proving that the entire purpose was to get rid of the tortoise.
He's got young Bill Hader vibes, love the chaotic gameshow host trope!
Yes, and they look enough alike that he could play Bill Hader's son in a skit!
He certainly does
miss bill so much😢😢😢😢😢
He's the hybrid of Mulaney and Hader!!!
@@user-ve1bc2sj1j He's awesome! But, he's hosted since he left the show and might come back someday.
Emma stone and Melissa McCarthy are some of my favorite hosts when they’re in because they act so genuine and give a 110% in acting being serious/not breaking character. Even if the sketch itself isn’t funny the good acting is always entertaining
Emma Stone is such a good actress she really pulls you into her character. I genuinely felt her concern about taking care of a tortoise.
For real some of my favorite sketches are Melissa’s!
This skit exists purely to show off James' amazing announcer impression and I am here for it
And to try and make Michael Longfellow the next Bill Hader-style game show host and because Lorne asked the local zoo for a tortoise to rent out for a sketch and they said yes. SNL apparently doesn't believe in that old saying of never working with children or animals because they've had both in the near-50 years the show's been on the air.
No it doesn't. He's ripping off Bill Hader's style but can't seem to pull it off.
@@canaisyoung3601 Longfellow is his own guy. And tbh quite good at it. One of the better actors on snl atm.
@@farhanzafar6129 I'm a big fan of Hader. And even though his take is a classic. Bill Hader doesn't have a trademark on the "stereotypical announcer guy". James is doing a good job at it. But if you still want to keep comparing, go ahead.
I liked the wiggly lady displaying the prize. She is hilarious!
Michael actually received a tortoise as a 6 year old (per his standup)!! So glad he got this standup/real life bit made into a perfect sketch!
Does he still have the tortoise?
@@pcbassoon3892 Nope, it's Jenn's...err... Emma's tortoise now.
no, he had to give it away when he moved to new york for snl. speedy is in a new family though! michael posted a picture of him on his instagram story after this sketch
Knowing that makes this funnier
Was it the actual original speedy who made a cameo in this sketch though? That is the question!
Emma Stone: "NOoooOOoo."
Michael Longfellow: "YES."
As a 5th grade teacher, this part really spoke to me.
-"They live for a 190 years!?"
-"Maybe more. Everyone who studies them die before they do." Honestly, that is some great writing and deserved a bigger laugh. Longfellow is quickly making his mark, his groundhog was perfection.
this is actually based on a true story from longfellow's life! he really has owned a tortise named speedy since he was six years old. he had to give it away when he joined snl, but it's fun to see that speedy made it on air.
I love how verbally aggressive Michael got 😂
That fact about Steve Irwin owning Darwin's tortoise is true. 🐢💯+
What are the odds on that AND also having the same color penis?
Chloe’s hand movements behind the tortoise at 1:00 were so funny and I wish the camera was on her for longer lol
I thought she was Cecily
THANK YOU for saying this. She cracked me up in the smallest role
@@subject_of_ymirme too! She reminds me of her so much
She's got some legs on her, damn
And then at 2:00 Molly comes out like the animal handler lol
This sketch is a 10/10 for me from the moment he says "Then kill him tough guy, you won't"
Micheal longfellow was an instant win, and has only proven himself more!
This makes me think of how I got the family bird (a double yellow-headed amazon) that my mama got when I was 6. The bird has been picking on me and calling me names since I was little. I inherited my childhood bully.
😂😂
Who else thinks Speedy the tortoise looks good in a silk robe? 🐢👘🙌
What silk robe are you talking about? The tortoise doesn't have any clothes on.
@@aebisdecunter They've been making these comments for several years to the point that we just go a long with it...

Michael Longfellow shines here, so cool to see them give him the characters he seems to love
Michael Longfellow is a delight. The new cast members in recent years are killing it.
"No its YOUR tortoise" is how I will end arguments now.
The last line. I'm really rooting for him like I always look for him in the sketch he needs more of the spotlight :)
Fun Fact: the turtles from the movie Rocky, Cuff and Link, are still alive and owned by Sylvester Stallone. They're about halfway through their lives at around 50 years old.
I read that a few years ago and it really moved me. It's awesome for him to have a tangible connection to something I'm sure he never thought would truly change his life. Just wish his dog could have lived as long but at least he bought him back.
I really appreciate seeing this sketch. I love and admire tortoises. Not only are they happily slow and sedentary, they get to live long lives. I can only wish to live forever.
But, also, Tortoises are seen in movies and stories as being logical and wise, Buddhist-like. When I unalive, I hope to one day reincarnate as a Tortoise.
Unfortunately, tortoises are actually extremely mentally challenged, which somehow is one of the reasons they live so long.
@@MatthewTheWanderer JUST LIKE ME!!
You've already found your enlightenment
Nobody knows what it's like to be them. One can dream i guess.
They'll go extinct unless we unalive ourselves en masse.
Fun fact: Michael Longfellow was indeed gifted a tortoise named Speedy at the age of six or seven😂
Is this tortoise his tortoise that we’re talking about?
Somehow, this sketch gave me more tortoise education than Zoboomafoo ever could
JAJ as the prize announcer is so underrated.
Absolutely brilliant sketch!! So happy to see Longfellow leading it too 😁
I agree, it has all the chops to make the highlight reel!
"Because it was done to me"
Pure gold
Impressive to see Michael Longfellow actually turn the gameshow host into a major character in the sketch instead of someone who just moves things along.
michael makes a great game show host and his spot on update was good too. loved seeing so much of him in the show tonight, easily one of my favorite newer cast members
For what it’s worth: The lifespan of a tortoise depends mostly on the species, genetics, and their overall health (obviously). Sulcatas live between 50-150 years. When cared for properly or when in the wild, they max out somewhere toward the middle or lower middle of that distribution.
The subtitle emotional cues were really good. You could see the pain and suffering that tortoise had caused to the host 😂
When he said all the other contestants had to do was answer one question right, my brain immediately thought, "How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?"
Not really sure why I was thinking THAT, but this sketch is comedy gold!
Punkie when it comes to random names will never get old... As the tortoise! LOL
“I think you’re thinking of tortilla…” every line of this sketch is gold 😁😁
Chloe presenting Speedy is killing me 😂😂😂 love it
A writer found out Darwin and Irwin owed the same turtle
Yep. I just saw that on a TH-cam video myself this week. Someone in the writers' room must have also seen it.
Longfellow's delivery is always incredible 😂
I hope this is a segment that is continually for the 5 time inductees. Absolute perfection
Announcer guy is a great cast member, would love to see his abilities put to use more especially in the sarcasm arena.
James Austin Johnson owns whatever sketch he's in
Fun fact: Galapagos tortoises weren't scientifically classified for a long time after they were discovered because none of them survived the ship rides back to England. None of them survived because the sailors kept eating them, because they were so delicious
Jesus dude, there's nothing fun about that fact at all. That's freaking messed up 😂😭
As we should not compare, but Longfellow is really there with Hader on game show sketches. Absolutely love him
In light of the ridiculousness of saying that you could ever "own" a creature that can quite literally live to see you and your next of kin and _their_ next of kin die,
they _looked after_ Harriet.
This sketch was such an unexpected delight!!! I wish they said who the writers were for this sketch - I would watch anything they wrote
I'm just going to go ahead and say that Emma Stone is right up there with the best SNL hosts of all time. She's very much like Tom Hanks...she's up for anything, and she never gives it anything less then 100% and always makes a good episode that much better.
“NO! He’s YOUR tortoise!” That line took me out. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
“Then kill him tough guy. You won’t”😂
Owning that tortoise is like having the video cassette in 'The Ring', or the button in 'Drag Me to Hell' -- you'd better pass it on to someone else before you die!
Out of all the obscure facts I remembered from school, Eli Whitney inventing the cotton gin was one I never thought I'd hear again. 😂
I have no idea why I remembered it, but I shouted it out confidently.
i loved chloe as the awkward model
Awkward? She was totally hot.
@@antera77 It is possible to be both hot and awkward.
At least that's what I'm hoping
@@jasonlogan5622 "It is possible to be both hot and awkward."
Of course. But Chloe Troast did an excellent impression of game show models. Anything but awkward. And looked totally hot doing so.
Just as JAJ's excellent impression of game show voiceovers, was anything but 'awkward."
"May be more. Everyone who studies them dies before they do." 🤣
Funniest game show sketch in a long time michael long fellow as a host?? About time hes perfect for this role hilarious 😂 .
I've had an aquatic turtle for 28 years. This sketch makes me feel seen 🐢🤣
My brother had his for 20yrs and gave it away because it got too big for the landlord to allow
I never stop watching SNL
How do you sleep
We should both stop watching SNL.
It's hanging on till it hits 50, then it will end,
I Love Molly Kearney
That's why you're brain damaged.
Emma's expressions from 4:28 to 4:36 are hilarious but also such great acting.
the announcer voice and cadence when talking about her prizes was just flawless
reminds me of the time my friend got me a hermit crab on vacation, so my mom retaliated by getting her a hamster.
Perfect line read on “Then kill him, tough guy. You won’t.”
😂
It took me a second to realise that was Chloe Troast bringing the tortoise out and not Cecily Strong.
I’m telling you, dude set up a quiz show to get rid of his tortoise 😂 😂😂
I feel like the three cars was an unnecessary component to giving away the tortoise, but I've never had to take care of a tortoise for 26 years...
Michael did an excellent job as the game show host. 👏👏👏
These are the Best Episode sketches by the SNL crew I've seen in a long time. And having the Darwin/Erwin turtle story be true, makes this game show an instant classic ! " so funny ! and for the boys, it'll add a couple inches" 😂😂😂
This is hilarious to me because I got my tortoise specifically for it to outlive me
Poor tortuous, he had absolutely no say in all of this
I had a desert tortoise when i was a kid. He fell in our pool trying to hibernate one year and died.
I haven't thought of that in years.
Also I used to date a girl that went to school with emma stone. We saw superbad in theaters and she nearly passed out.
What the hell snl stop making me think.
"Is it a corn or a flour tortoise?" slayed me.
I love it! Usually these game show are joke-joke-joke which is great, but it's nice to see them stick with an idea all the way through,.
Imagine walking into a production meeting and being like “Fellas, I need a tortoise.”
I was given a Sulcata tortoise to "foster temporarily" while my in-laws were moving. It's been 2 years, we still have the tortoise, and there's currently no end in sight. and my name is Harriet...
His face and impressions are 💯 % Bill Hader.
I missed him on SNL .
And today, he returns.
I laughed so much with this skit. 😂 the contestants were quick with their comments and comebacks. 🤣
I hope Emma Stone is taking care of that tortoise. It’s an expensive investment but well worth it.
Who else wanted the oldest lady in the navy to win so that Speedy can go cruising in three new Benz?!
I must say I'm digging James Austin Johnson's gameshow announcer impression.
This was hilarious! Things are definitely looking up for SNL with these recent hosts and cast members.😊
Ok, I watched Question Quest and then spent the next 25 minutes of my life watching Question Quest five more times in a row
"I think you're thinking of a quesadilla" 😂😂
michael longfellow got me kicking my feet and blushing
If Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho were to be remade for cinema or streaming, I think Michael Longfellow would be perfect to play Patrick Bateman
I can't be the only one who can see it
The host really went all out, starting a whole game show just to pawn off his Tortoise on someone else.
Holy crap, Steve Irwin and Charles Darwin really did own the same tortoise.
this is one of the expertly written sketch scripts. well done
This guy seems like he’s Bill Hader’s son.
"Why did you do this to me?"
"Because it was done to me."
Damn. HAHAHAH
"Dohmer, Bubba, Bippy, Bappy, Dippy-Doppy the fat one dahmer glusifer...."
😂 😂 I cant.
Poor Speedy is camera-shy! Got a few chuckles out of this skit!!
I wonder if that's really his tortoise Speedy or another one. Inquiring minds want to know lol!
At first I was thinking the real reason was that maybe Speedy just wanted to brumate (the reptile equivalent of hibernate), but looking it up, Sulcatas do not brumate. Even so, Sulcatas are diurnal (awake in day, asleep at night), so maybe he was just regular sleepy.
"Question Quest" was a hilarious skit. It was well written and written acted. Ha ha ha keep up the good work SNL.
I was drinking a protein shake when he said “then kill him, tough guy” and guys, shake just went out of my nose
michael longfellow is rly channeling his inner Bill Hader-esque gameshow host with a screw loose
