This performance is part of the Ud Festival: A tribute to one of the biggest icons of the Arabic music and cinema: Farid Al Atrash. The Ud festival is a co-production of Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra and de Meervaart.
During the 20th century cultural institutions such as cinema and conservatories produced legendary films and famous artists such as: Oum Kolthoum, Abdelhalim Hafez, Mohamed Abdelwahab, Warda Al Jazairia, Asmahan and Farid Al Atrash.
The Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra considers it a huge responsibility and honor to present these icons and their legacy. This way we can preserve the heritage and pass it on to the next generations.
This concerts are part of the AAO-tutorials program and aimed at introducing viewers and musicians to repertoire that stretches from Granada to Baghdad. Since 2018, the AAO has started a series about Mohamed Abdelwahab, Abdelhalim Hafez, Oum Kolthoum and Fairuz. During this concert we play the beautiful music of the legend, Farid Al Atrash.
Dubbed the ‘King of the Ud’, Farid Al-Atrash (1910-1974) was renowned for his outstanding playing and pure, passionate voice. His songs were mainly about love, inspiring generations throughout the Arab world, and he managed to interweave long improvisations on the ud with his vocals. Al-Atrash was also famed as an actor, starring in some 30 Egyptian musical films for which he also wrote and performed the music.
