that first question. You don't even have to do all that math. You just have to add the two numbers and realize that there's only one number that is on your multiple choice that is more than the two numbers. So really you just need to use the process of elimination.
That is true for this particular problem. Since this is a teaching video, however, we want to show the steps necessary to solve the problem for any numbers that might be used. Don't forget we also have and excellent study guide for the ASVAB exam on our website at www.mometrix.com/studyguides/asvab.

In this particular example of adding on an interest to an original value, there's no need to take 4% of $329 ( = $329 × 0.04 ) and then add that to $329, thats two steps; one multiplication and one addition. You can do it in one step by mentally adding 1 to the percentage you need to take and multiplying; 1 + 0.04 = 1.04. $329 × 1.04 = $342.16 Same with adding on an interest of 7% to $921, just multiply by 1.07; $921 × 1.07 = $985.47

For that question I would've probably multiplied the 15.99 and 4 for not reading right. An yup that answer is there for people who just did that. If it wasn't then I would've read again to see how it really goes.
Its simple but it's not simple. Like I understand always why the answer is the answer it is. But how to setup the problem is always the problem with me. Like whether I have to do this or that to find the answer....which is why the arithmethic reasoning part seems the hardest for me.
Ps: simple trick, for every % interest just add a 100 to it and then multiply. E.g: the 4% interest, instead of the long way of multiplying and adding, just add a 100 to the 4% and then multiply. So 104/100% × $329 gives you your total interest amount of $342.16.....
