  • On February 25, 1997, 23-year-old Cayce Williams entered the emergency room at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elgin, Illinois, carrying the lifeless body of his girlfriend’s 20-month-old daughter, Quortney Kley. Medical staff immediately called police, who arrested Cayce the same evening. Cayce was charged with several felony counts of murder, as well as predatory criminal sexual assault.
Nine long years later, Cayce Williams accepted a plea agreement and was sentenced to 48 years in Illinois state prison. Due to a change in Illinois law, however, he was only required to serve 24 of those years behind bars. Now, he is scheduled to be released from the Dixon Correctional Center two weeks from this episode’s release date.
In this episode, you’ll hear my conversation with Quortney’s mom, Gretta, in which we talk about her beloved, stubborn, sassy baby girl whose rapist and murderer is preparing to walk free from prison on February 25.
This is the mind-boggling story of Quortney Kley.

Just looking at her beautiful little face and the cutest smile ever, it’s hard to think of what her own father did to her. He shouldn’t ever even have the slightest chance at freedom. It’s like pointing a loaded gun at every child, just waiting for it to fire. It’s also a disgrace to Quortney’s memory.

I was the victim of sexual assault when I was 6 years old and it lasted for 6 years, until i was almost 13. After it came to light my mom didn't make me testify against him in court at the risk of further traumatizing me by having to tell my story in front of everyone. As a result of me not testifying he got 5 years in jail. He got out after 3 for "good behavior". Our justice system is beyond incompetent.

I can't even imagine living with the knowledge that this happened to your child. My brother died at 17 in a car accident. As hard as it still is to deal with my mom says to me one in a while when something is in the news like this that she is thankful that his life ended the way it did, rather than some of these other things that happen to kids and having to live with that. I have to give props to parents who dont crawl into a hole (or are able to pull themselves out of it) and push through it. People always say it gets better - it doesn't, you just learn to live with it.

That father was a piece of work, wasn’t he? Christ, he’s harassing the entire legal system because his kid was convicted of raping and killing a baby. I have no idea what that man’s proclivities are, but given how defensive he is of his scumbag son, his conduct in general, and the fact that his son learned this proclivity from somewhere, it makes me wonder very strongly whether or not pops was a pedophile.

And as teacher I know I'm not a psychologist but any child development person will recommendations not to let the boyfriend/girlfriend or even a stepparent make rules or discipline your child. That's your responsibility and the other birth parent if they are involved. Not your partner's right

This was the only time Gretta had seen any signs of Cayce abusing the girls, other than the one instance she mentioned in the episode. I don't think it was a matter of discipline; from what Cayce told the police, it doesn't sound like Quortney was misbehaving. He just decided to rape her and kick her in the head. It's too horrifying to think about for long. :(

Not trying to start an argument or anything, but let me say this... I am an "step parent" . He has called me mommy since i came into his life at 3 years old. His father and I also share a child. He works 3rd shift and I am a stay at home mom. I am in charge of my children and their day to day life. I have been for a long time.
However, my "step" son, is my first born, my baby, my world! I understand the fear of new s/os in your life and that of your family, but we aren't all baby killers. His mom is rarely in the picture, but he knows he has 2 moms and that I will love him no matter what! He knows he is my baby and that we work hard to make sure they are both healthy and happy!
Speaking for the "stepped up " parents, we love our kids and would never do anything to hurt them!

I take your point about victim blaming, Laine, but I think it can sometimes stem from an underlying fear of our own vulnerability.
We like to tell ourselves that WE could never be raped, beaten by a partner, conned by a romance scammer, lose touch with our own children. So we criticise the victims, and their failures and weaknesses, in order to set ourselves apart and make ourselves feel safer.
That’s how I see it, anyway.

I was blamed for my sweet 20 month old daughter Ashleys death. I was at work, when he dropped my daughter off the roof of our house. My baby girl was murdered by her father, and he is Scott free, while my daughter lays in an unmarked grave, thousands of miles away from me. With her younger sisters ashes at her feet. Her death five months prior, due to a birth defect. I lost my two girls five months apart. Was told my CPS not to bother praying for my daughter because she's gonna die anyways. I was 19 years old, working to take care of my daughter. I left her with her grandfather, grandmother, young uncle, aunt and Father. My dad, her grandfather decided to go grocery shopping, yet my daughters farther wouldn't let her go with my parents. It was the one day I didn't tell my daughter I loved her, the one day of her LIFE! She was my universe. And she was stolen away from me. Dropped from the roof of our house into lake apopka.... My Ashley was my life. I got slammed shamed and blamed, when I was doing what every loving parent does, work to provide for my child. Whom was my world. It's been 26 long years. I have a daughter, Ashley's younger sister. It's hard to look at her, and not wonder what their relationship would be like, who she would be. God has given me my rainbow baby, my Clarrissa. And my daughter gave me three beautiful grandsons. But that loss of my girls is present, every day, every second of my life. The pain never goes away
You just learn to life with this gaping whole in your heart.

the fact this monster is getting out of prison to live his life, is absurd to say the least. This proves to me that this world has lost the ability to see and value our children the way they should be. I have found that when people do horrible things to children, its not taken to the serious extent I feel it should be. I feel there has to be changes to the sentences for those who hurt and kill children, like say, you take a life, you give your life, whether in prison or death penalty, this has t stop, these are our most precious of gifts we need to protect and cherish.

If a parent abandons their child, then they are at fault. You don’t get to abandon a child, and then say it’s not my problem. Situations like this, there’s always red flags. Men that do this don’t just do it out of nowhere. No excuses! I am a mother of two children, and I’ve never had my child abused or killed because I don’t put them in those situations. The only victim is the child. It’d be one thing if a mother was fighting to see her child and something happened that’s different. This is not that situation.

I will never understand anyone looking at a small child/toddler/infant and getting the least bit aroused or feel inclined to sexually assault them. I don't care, you can never convince me that it's an orientation or that there's anything acceptable or innocent about it. Children's minds cannot process what's happening, their bodies can't handle it, it permanently damages them if it doesn't kill them. People that victimize children deserve the same punishment as someone that commits murder, period.
How that man could be released and how his family dared to fight for his release is beyond me. I don't care if you're my father, brother, child - you do this to a child and you're staying in jail where you belong. The nerve of them to come at Greta and her family, lowlifes of the highest degree. Rot in hell to everyone that contributed to this man's freedom or victim blamed the mother, you're disgusting.

The point of forgiveness has very little to do with the abuser, it is more about the victims. You forgive the abusers so that you (the victim) may be free of the poison that is eating away at your life and your relationships. It is so hard to do, but you know when you have reached that point because you realise the abuser is just a stain in your past. You can think about the victim with the joy and love that they deserve, instead of always in the context of the abuser.

I went thru a somewhat similar situation. My ex husband is serving 22.5 years in prison for sexually abusing our 12 year old daughter and then physically assaulting our 14 year old son, who has autism, when he tried to stop him. I worked nights, when the abuse happened. I was also abused by ex husband. Ex husband was manipulative and his parents were horrible to me and kids. They were upset, since their other son was also in prison for the same things to his own kids. After my ex was sentenced, his parents became horrible. My kids and I ended up moving 300 miles away from then because of how they treated us. They blamed me, saying I didn't do enough for ex and they felt he turned to daughter for what he wanted. They blamed our daughter, mind you a 12 year old, for his actions. Both kids and I have dealt with PTSD over the past 9 years. Ex has to register as a sex offender upon his release and he can't ever have contact with me or kids once he gets out. I still fear the day he is released. As sad as this sounds, I hope he gets out of prison the way his older brother did, thru a body bag.

It's crazy to me how messed up the child protection and family court people can be. I ended a marriage with a man who was emotionally and verbally abusive, but it had recently escalated to physical. That's when I started making plans. I don't understand why we don't have better resources to help people fleeing abuse. A few days before I intended to try to have him removed from the home, he slapped our then 2 year old across the face. This was a 6'6" 240lb man. It horrified me and I had him arrested. He was convicted but he just got unsupervised probation. Months later I began to get very sick. The court decided my children were better off with the convicted child abuser than the chronically ill mother. Their reasoning was that he had more family support than I did. And I hear all these stories where children are left in deplorable situations. Meanwhile others are taken from homes in which they were thriving.

He was so blacked out drunk that he passed out walking to his place. My brother and grandma(moms mom) calling the cops. Because he was my father he had the right to take me. At some point of the night he woke up and we walked to his place. My grandma (his mom) got so shook to see me coming home so late. The first thing she did waa call my family to let them know im safe. My brother was a teenager and my grandma was sick. No one was to blame except my dad. And kidnapping me was just a pay back to a teenager for kickking him out due to violence under influence of alcohol. I got to see him a few times after when i was bigger and able to make choices. He blames my mom for everything and lied to me just to seem better. It was so crazy i knew things were lies but his violence still scared me where i never announced my concerns with his words.

To your reminder about victim blaming:
Yes! And of narcissistic abusers can easily manipulate the appearance of a situation. They will do all these things in private so when they mashes a seemingly innocent comment in public, the victim reacts and the narcissist is like "see? They're overreacting! This is what I live with."

Also. On the topic of leaving your children with your partner.
Chances are you know that partner better than you know a babysitter. Or at least you think you do. You've dated and spent time and talked with them.
Babysitters often you meet shortly before and leave your child with them.
Every time I babysat, I would get a call, spend 10-15 minutes on the phone, talk about my qualifications, then show up a few minutes early to make that transition easy for the kids.
Only one family knew me before hand.
