Painting The Big HO Scale Warehouse (Part 1) | River Road - Vlog #93

  • This is an in depth (Part 1) demonstration and commentary based on color theory application using an airbrush. I also talk a little about inspiration from my youthful memories and a few thoughts on selective compression. The included painting method will help to achieve a more advanced weathered wood and concrete texture on plastic with an airbrush if one so chooses.

      @@boomerdiorama No, sorry, we didn't get around much. I was deep into my music at the time. Rehearse in the afternoon and play at night. I do remember a wonderful young lady, however. 🙂We would end end up leaving with people from the bar after our show ended and enjoy some Canadian hospitality. I do remember an all night club, don't know what it was. The club owner we worked for had to go there our last night and exchange our pay for US dollars and we went with him.

    We would be waiting for him to unload the small wooden crates of drink while he was at the house we would go and help ourselves to a few bottles.
    Once finishing the drinks we would go up the street and go into Old lady Wilsons backyard and run amuck swinging on her cloths line we where right little buggers , yea they where the days LOL .

    Some very cool shots there Boomer. Love the way you once more showed the shading with the airbrush. Cool to see how the Tamiya overspray can be manipulated. Makes me think of playing around with the unfinished process of a polaroid photo. To achieve such an effect, though, may be different with other brands. The IPA strip also a great example of how subtle the airbrush can change the look of surfaces too flat. Very much like how it makes the previous layers visible and pop like real concrete would accumulate grime, dust and dirt almost from inside outwards, rather than just accumulated grime on the outside. Such capillary action of accumulating water damage to me, is what modeling concrete is about.
    Looking forward to your next episodes.

    When I was 18 I worked in a department store as a gofor in the window dressing dept. One day I stoped in the artists paint room. He painted backgrounds for the windows every week. He was I great thought. I asked , What's going on? , He said I have to paint trees on this background and I don't know how to paint the lower trunks and roots. For some reason I said that's easy. His answer was ok , you paint them. Now we're not talking great detail, almost abstract. So I did. He was flabbergasted, how did you do that, you don't have any training in art ? I said it wasn't hard. Make believe your 5 yrs. old . You don't see much more of a tree when your 5 yrs. old. He laughed and said he'd remember that. So what your saying is absolutely correct. Remember your child hood and you'll have an interest different view of what your doing.

    Boomer, the sound effects of the railroad and wildlife are a great introduction leading into your instruction.
    I know it's more effort and time consuming to do this, but it's well worth it!
    As far the Vlog itself, breaking it into parts as you do gives those of us who are just breaking into the field of real art in model railroading a chance to digest each technique, from building to the finishing aspect of the unique type of painting style.
    I believe we can all agree it's not the trains, rather it's the overall realism of the artistic endeavor that makes this channel stand out as a true prototype railroad, in model form.
    Your work really is a gift you share, and if I can just tap into a fraction of this talent, I will have achieved a great accomplishment.

      He teaches his techniques by presenting them in a way that is understandable and easily learned after a few times of him showing them. It blows your mind seeing the outstanding results he gets from what seems to be such a chaotic way of painting that you are in amazement the first time you see the techniques that you don't learn much but very quickly as you watch the next couple times it becomes less of a what seems impossible to learn to being very easy to grasp and easily absorbed into your own skill set. He makes it fun and not drawn out in very long videos which helps learn what he's presenting easily as well. 👍

    i like how you focus on building layers, and the importance of allowing your previous layers to show through in certain areas to get unique variation and randomness.
    i use a similar technique with spraypaint and layers of acrylic paint with a brush. i like how the airbrush solves the issues of brush streaks/strokes.
    Have you ever added texture to your layers by tapping them with a rag, or a faux type paint finish using crinkled plastic wraps to add extra randomness? I really like that technique with the mediums I use but am unsure if it would work as well with the airbrush! Just some food for thought! This game is all about building up our toolboxes and skillsets!

    Thanks for the great video, Boomer. I like the commentary about how times have changed for kids. Kids can't do anything today without having the book thrown at them by parents, the law, schools, etc... there's just no breathing room for them.
    A little off topic but how did you get that white faded effect on your box car? Is it powder or your usual x-21 technique?

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The worst thing one can do is to Heavy Shepherd kids. Kids need boundaries but they can figure out life on their own.
      The white fade on the boxcar is not white. I never use white to fade red because it just turns (out of scale) pink - the kind of pink you don't want.
      I use very thin (5% paint/ 95% IPA) Tamiya XF-15 "Flat Flesh." I work it in ever so lightly. If I want to highlight red, I use orange in the same way. Sometime down the road, when I switch gears to some rolling stock weathering, I'll cover some of those areas. 😁

    Hey Boomer, you are mixing and multiplying your colors in a very homeopathic way. Maybe after shaking, you must knock the bottle slightly on the table to make something very magic happening. And I found out, that I need an airbrush and learn how to use it. But I fear it looks easier as it really is.

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It becomes easy after practice. Fear to try is the real hurdle. Dive in and get over it. Paint mixing is always trial and error until it comes with a little practice and experience, because the fail margin is wide and safe enough. It's only a weathered building, not CP action red or Conrail blue. Even then the latter are all different with fade, etc. anyway. No one can duplicate my colors, but then, no one can duplicate yours colors either . . . But hey, no experience if one does not try right?
