I think that when you get down to it Malfoy wasn't a bad kid. he was just born to bad parents and as a result got mixed up in a bad situation before he could know better. if his parent had been different people with different values and a different moral compass Malfoy and harry might have been friends. but, like many things in life we don't get to choose who our parents are and as a result Malfoy paid a cost for it. it is worth noting that the redemption arch that Malfoy has is very significant. his betrayal of Voldemort and choosing to side with his friends and classmates to fight the death eaters makes him a hero and in the end sometimes redemption in the third act is all it takes.
