Matt Hasselbeck’s OT declaration in Green Bay needs a deep rewind | Seahawks - Packers 2003 Playoffs

  • When Matt Hasselbeck and Mike Holmgren led the Seahawks to the postseason following the 2003 season, they each desperately wanted to emerge from Lambeau Field with a playoff victory over their old team. After a wild back-and-forth game against Brett Favre and the Packers reached overtime, Hasselbeck was overflowing with confidence that they were gonna be leaving Green Bay victorious. What ensued was perhaps the biggest 'welp' moment of all time.

    He just mis-spoke. He meant to say, "We want the ball and THEY'RE going to score!"
    Actually, from what I've heard about this, it wasn't his fault at all, and he threw the ball to exactly where Bannister was supposed to be. He just ran the wrong route, and Al Harris, who had a nose for the ball, made a perfect break and that was that.

    Not that big of a deal but poole did not get both feet down. This was when the nfl had the strange rule that if a player would have landed in bounds but was pushed out before both feet hit the ground it would be ruled a catch. Being a Seattle native I remember the early 2000's Seahawks era well and all of the frustrations that came with it. Our receivers routinely dropped passes (as pointed out in this video) so much that we hired a 41 year old Jerry Rice in 2004. The biggest problem was hiring Mike Holmgren as the head coach and GM; he knew how to recognize talent but he never knew how to use them correctly. I remember the 2006 NFC divisional playoff game between the Seahawks and Bears well. Hutchinson signing with Minnesota in 2006 hurt but we still had most of the players from the 2005 Superbowl team. In my opinion Holmgren's play calling cost us another Superbowl appearance; throughout the 4th quarter and into overtime Holmgren kept handing the ball off to Shaun Alexander (who was only as good as his offensive line) and kept getting stuffed by the best defense in the NFL that year. The game went into overtime and the Seahawks won the coin toss but they went three and out. The Bears hung in there, kicked a field goal, and won the game in OT. The Holmgren era was over at that moment, they never won a playoff game again until Pete Carol was hired. There were many Head coaches in the mid 2000's that showed how obsolete they were (Mike Shanahan, Dan Reeves, Marty Schottenheimer) Mike Holmgren was one of them.

    We need the 49ers Saints 2011 divisional playoff game and The Catch III.
    This was the bounty gate game.
    This was in front of the crowed that booed Alex Smith on SNF and chanted WE WANT CARR the year before.
    This was a pass to Vernon Davis and the Singletary story "I want winners" speech the year before.
    This is a defense that brought the pain that the bounty gate coach wanted his team to bring, and where Donte Whitner truly earned his nickname Donte Hitner.
    This is a game with 5 lead changes in 4 minutes.
    The Catch I, II, and III all came on 3rd and long.
    There are so many stories to this game. We need a rewind.

    Packers defensive coordinator Ed Donnatell called an all out blitz causing the quick throw from hassebeck and game ending interception. The next week Donnatell wanted to call the same all out blitz on 4th & 26 vs philidelphia but was overruled by Mike Sherman and green bay lost and Donnatell was fired.

    The thing that gets kinda lost in this game is yes, Hasselbeck made a pretty bold declaration, but it wasn't meant to be disrespectful to the Packers or their fans. As mentioned, Matt used to be a Packer, and during the Mic'd up for this video, Matt and the Packers players are all having fun and chirping at each other. It was meant to be a playful jab at his friends and former teammates, and unfortunately that line was the only one picked up and announced to the crowd. Matt explains all this in the video he and Adam Vinatieri did for NFL Films and said that there was much more crude stuff being said before the coin toss. Still a legendary moment in NFL history though

    Hasselbeck did a sit down with Adam Vinatieri where they talked about some career highlights and this was one of Hasselbeck’s. He says they had nothing to lose losing that game and he just hopes the mics didn’t pick up everything else that was said.

    • @Funktaro5
      @Funktaro5 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly though, does he exude confidence to you in that moment? It sounds more like he's desperately trying to convince himself and everyone else around him that this is true.
      A truly confident player doesn't need to do that. They aren't hoping around like a little kid. They act like they've been there before, even if they haven't.

    • @Nickbuchert27
      @Nickbuchert27 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Funk yeah if ur team is lacking confidence that’s exactly what you wanna do try and convince them that you are gonna win. Idk if you saw the video but the WR were clearly lacking some confidence and possibly were even afraid dropping easy catches. Hassleback did the right thing to try and convince his players that they are gonna win.

    Woah!
    I was 10 when this game happened but I still have a vivid memory of Harris putting that finger up as he returned the pick-6. I was too young to even remember what year/who that game was against so didn't actually know that would be the conclusion to this rewind (though the Harris foreshadowing did tip me off).
    Really cool to relive a moment that, for whatever reason, has stuck with me for so long.
    It's funny too, because I didn't even realize that three of my strongest Packers memories from childhood all came in '03: My first trip to Lambeau to see the Pack play Philly on MNF; Favre's monster game after his father passed; this pick-6.
    Great year for a young Pack fan.

    A correction needs to be made: Poole did not get both feet down. At the time, there was a "force-out" rule in that if the defender pushed a receiver out of bounds the officials could call a ball "caught" if they deemed it possible that the receiver could have had both feet down if the defender didn't push them out.
    A rule that harshly benefited receivers and the rule was removed for the 2008 season onward.

    You should add the Tracy porter pick six to this series. If that didn’t happen then Payton Manning gets a super bowl win with a final drive for the ages, and the narrative that Payton manning doesn’t have the rings goes down the drain. Instead saints get a super bowl saving pick six. It was a large moment.
