Ciara O Connor I know I’m not Tori, but wooden wheels are okay but are difficult to clean because the wood can get urine soaked since hedgehogs pee when they run. I think wooden wheels are good for animals like chinchillas that chew everything so putting plastic isn’t a option. For hedgehogs, I think they are unnecessary since hedgies don’t really chew. The only reason I’d see is if you really want a specific look to your cage.

My hedgehog has a comfort wheel and I tied a sock around the back and it is SILENT! Newton loves it and can still run at full speed and I can keep the little man in my bedroom
Your videos have been so helpful to me! We adopted a 2-year old hedgehog (that supposedly came with everything she needed) and were not really prepared for how false that was. She came with no bed, wrong food, no heat source, and that terrible silent runner wheel, and a two small cage. I must admit I hadn't done enough research before I got her (it was an urgent rehoming situation and I had wanted one for awhile), but TH-cam videos have been so helpful. I know I'm a few years late lol, but pet stores have this new brand off wheel, like the bucket wheel. Completely silent with a nice thick base, however there is a bar that is infront of the wheel, still on the ground but that does mean you cannot slide a litter box under it. The litter box can go infront but I find sometimes the pea trips off the wheel and falls behind it. The wheel hase little grooves raised up to give them traction. It clips off the stand and can be left in warm wafer to wash it, then just wipe it off with a little towel or whatever you want. I find it pretty easy to clean, largest size I can fins is 12 inches or 1 foot. For a larger hedgehog it might be a bit small, but for your normal sized hedg babies it's the perfect size. Incase you care about color, I have only seen them in blue. But I'm sure there's other colors out on Amazon or something! The 12 inch one is about 20$ but since you can remove it from the stand it lasts a LONG time. I have for about 2 years and its still completely silent. Good luck 🦔

I got my hedgehog yesterday and the breeder said that she might not run on her wheel for a whole week because of a new environment, I was perfectly fine with that. Last night, at 3am I heard this skidding. Woke up and she is running to her heart's content in her wheel. Took a video, cutest thing ever. I love my Rue. ❤😃 ( I have an Algerian Chocolate with Badger Stripes)
My current hedgehog wheel was one of the "silent" wheels you can find in most pet stores but after a year of having it my hedgehog has somehow bent it to where it's constantly leaning forward and after a few months I've decided to get a new one. I am going to be going to a pet store tomorrow to get some bedding to have my hedgehog try out so I could get the new wheel there (im getting a comfort wheel) however there is a sale on amazon and I can get it for $12 so I will be getting it there. This video was extremely helpful, thanks :)
The Kaytee silent runner caused my hedgehog to break out skin wise even after cleaning it. So after more research and now finding this video, im grateful for all the options you gave along with the pros and cons of wheels.
For and hamster owners....My hammy loves her 12in flying saucer. Her back never comes close to bending and I think she really likes being able to see what's in front of her when running, which she could not in an upright wheel. The plastic is thin and you as a human need to be careful not to break by applying too much pressure when cleaning

Taylor Washalefsky I have the silent spinner and I’ve never had a problem with it so I wouldn’t be worried. As long as you keep your hedgies nails clipped then they should be ok. Lots of other people also have the wheel and recommend it
If you’re super concerned, I’ve heard of people taking clear aquarium sealant/silicone and wiping a thin line along the seam between the two colors to fill the cracks and holes

I bought a bucket wheel then changed the bucket part for the bottom 6 inches of a 13 inch builders bucket. Happy hog. And he's a big boy, 700g! Not even fat, just the Jason Momoa of hedgies lol
I had to revisit this video because i was thinking of getting a silent runner but i wanted to see what you had to say about em so happy i did because im getting my hedgy tomorrow i would've felt so bad if something happened to him
My local breeders dont reccomend the bucket wheels anymore. They have only a 10.5" diameter and adult hedgehogs require a 12". You can see that there is a slight curve when a hedgehog is on the bucket wheel and their legs are not on a flat surface. It's a shame because its so well made.
None of my hedgehogs have had issues with bucket wheels, but some of them are indeed to big for them which is a shame. Some sellers sell slightly larger bucket wheels, and some have been experimenting with cake cover wheels again, but so far no one has put out anything 12 inches in the US which is a shame.
I am a new owner of a hedgehog and am so happy to have found your videos! He came with everything and one of those wheels has a cover on it, so I plan on replacing it right away. I was wondering if you had any recommendations for hedgehogs that haven’t had much human interaction? My hedgehog is adopted and he definitely is a bit more sensitive an aggressive than I have experienced in an animal. He is getting better, but I don’t want to stress him out while trying to get him social and tame. Do you have any recommendations for taming a 🦔 that is pretty wild? Thanks!!!
IAmFruitLoop I have two hedgehogs, I personally think that living in the Philippines is an advantage because of the temp here. I dont heat up my hedgehog as often due to the standard temp here

Hi, Tori, do I need to clean the running wheel daily? I bought a wooden wheel for my hedgehog, it likes the wheel very much, and it plays with it for about 3 to 4 hours daily. But it poos and pees inside the wheel every time it plays the wheel. The wooden wheel is pretty hard to wash and I am thinking should I wash it twice a week instead of daily but afraid that there will be skin issue for my hedgehog.
I just got a little hedgehog a few weeks ago and she didn't use her wheel either. The solution was that the pet store I got her from gave me a heat lamp for heating and the light was bothering her at night. I swapped to a ceramic heat emitter and literally the first night with it she used the wheel.
@@AkiraSieghart that exact same thing happened to me, I thought mine was sick or pregnant because she wasn't active at night and didn't use her wheel, I turned her lamp off one late night and she immediately came out and got super active.

Not sure if you've seen the exotic nutrition wheels in person but they are much bigger in person, my hedgehog turns around with ease in hers (she's no baby either she's 2 yrs old) I've also heard people say hedgehogs can get confused by the holes when trying to exit but mine does so no issue, she literally will be running then suddenly just walks out lol I had the Carolina storm bucket wheel (the other model that isn't clear) and it was great but problem was my hedgehog would constantly slip while running.
Did you need to teach your hedgehog to run on his wheel? I have a bucket wheel but Mr. Oatmeal falls off. He is 6 months and I just adopted him from a family that didn't tell me too much about him. Thank you
Hello my hedgehog just turned 1 last month and he just seems super small for being his age I feed him a pretty well balanced diet . He eats 1 and 1\2 tablespoons of food a day I also try to feed him insects but he won't eat them . He's a pretty picky eater and maybe he's not gaining weight on what he's eating so idk what's wrong with him? Any tips u have will be much appreciated!
Does your hedgie poop every time he runs? Its so unfortunate that ours does... OUr little loves the wheel but sheeesshh! I hate cleaning it and she goes endlessly! Have any tips?!
I have that slanted wheel that you recommended and the wheel is pretty big but I don’t really like it just because it is extremely loud and it takes up a lot of space in my hedgehogs cage. And what’s even worse is that I have his cage in my room so I always wake up in the middle of the night to him running so if you have this wheel and you have a hedgehog that lives in your room I kind of would not recommend unless you’re a heavy sleeper. I love your video and thank you for the help I wanted to get a bucket wheel from Etsy but it’s kind of hard to convince my mom to get it because she thinks that it cost way too much money just for a wheel. I do agree that it is quite pricey but if you say that this wheel will last a long time and it’s pretty silent then I really want to get it. I only want the best for my hedgehog and I have spent so much money on him already and I’ve only had him for about two months. Your videos are so helpful so thank you so much because without your videos I don’t think I would have really known what to do with my hedgehog and I wouldn’t really know how to take care of him. Especially since I got him unexpectedly on my birthday. Never thought I would actually have a hedgehog since my parents don’t really like having many pets.

I assume all the "Comfort Wheels" are the same? Contemplating getting my girl a Giant 12" Comfort Wheel made by Kaytee. I use a "Silent Spinner" for my Hedgies, it was recommended to me, but boy do they not last. At $50 CDN you'd think they'd last more than a couple months.. I've bought two this year for one of my hedgies. Kaytee Comfort Wheel for $28 is more appealing right now than $70 for a Bucket Wheel.. lol
I bought a bucket wheel off of Henry'sHedgehogHaven on etsy and although it is silent and well made, I think it isn't deep enough. My girl will be running full speed and sometimes a back foot will slip off. Disappointing because it was only a few $$ cheaper than a Carolina Storm and I don't think they are well suited for hedgehogs at all. It's only 4" deep
hi, my hedgie does not like any light at all and she always hide under the hut when the light is on. she only comes out when the room is completely dark. i have told she is 5month old now. I know they are nocturnal but when i watch peoples youtube theirs are still walking around the cage with lights. any suggestion?
If ur hedgehog is making a weird noise when u try to pick it up don’t let it scare u, they need to get used to u Also after u get it if there are some quills falling out it is called quilling which is completely normal
OMG that's scared me about the silent spinner wheel as that was what came with my hedgehog cage from the breeder and it attaches to his cage.....crap! I'm based in the UK so will have to see what else I can find. Argh I am super worried and scared now. He has been fine the past month on it...
Us brits can get carolina storm buckets on ebay, and some breeders sell custom built ones at half the price, also on ebay. Easy! Also, do you actually have a cage? Or a vivarium? Cages are a bit cold here unless you run your heating hard!
Doctor Glock thanks, il check eBay. He has a cage with plastic bottom and it’s plenty warm enough as we have a small flat and keep heating low if needed plus he has a heat mat in his cage so heating isn’t the issue just the wheel. Thanks
My rule of thumb with stuff that could be bad is.. If there are reasons to not use it then dont Simple to me Unless if you already have it then its your call
I got a preowned hedgie with a silent spinner and didn't have any problems, unfortunately she passed away a couple months ago. In our grief my husband and I went walking through a pet store and they happened to have 2 albino hedgehogs (sisters, they snuggle and everything) we just had to take home. Our babies are using the silent spinner and we were planning on getting a second wheel, but now I'm worried. Is the silent spinner really that dangerous?
I think that’s personally up to you to judge and decide if you think you should switch. Those wheels have caused issues for many and have not caused any for others. I personally wouldn’t use them on the off chance something could happen, but that’s just me.
the issue you run into is drainage of urine. Same issues as with sealing a silent spinner, you dont drain the urine. Hogs have been known to get nails caught in wheel covers and have gotten ammonia burns from urine. Its easier to just wipe the wheel down daily than wash a wheel cover
Question (I know is not related) but, should I be concerned that my hedgehog doesn’t seems to care about crickets nor worms? I got hin after him having a year and a month of life, his previous owner wasn’t really a good owner. It was practically a rescue, and he seems to like eggs, fruits and everything that is harmless to him. But those, doesn’t matter if they are alive, he IGNORES them.
I’d keep trying but if he insists on not eating them, I’d just let him eat what he actually will eat. You can add something like cricket powder to his normal food if you’d like for him to get some chitin in his system even though he doesn’t like bugs!(:
The things you explained about the silent spinner seam, does that apply to hamsters as well? I've seen so many people recommend that spinner for hammies, so now I'm a bit lost hahaha
we rescuded our hedgehog and she had a wire wheel. We baught her a plastic wheel but she wont use it at all. Had it for over a week and she wont get on it at all. I keep putting her on it and she just gets off. Any suggestions
If it’s the correct size and shape for a hedgehog then the best you can do is just leave it in there and let her decide whether she wants to mess with it or not. You can try a different type if finances allow, you can also put a little food on it to attract her to it. Otherwise hedgehogs tend to just do what they want.
If you give them time they'll start to warm up to it because he took 7 weeks to accutally use it so let your heggie uhh st GET used to it or try doing slight "training"
I got my hedgehog at 2 years old as some girl was moving and couldn't take her with her and I bought her a bucket wheel but she never uses it. Is there any way to encourage her to use it?
Try taking the wheel out of the cage put it on the floor (living room for me) and put a yummy treat like a dried cricket or mealworm to let them know its not something to be scared of. But just to let you know this might not work but it worked for me. Please rember to put the wheel back at night. Let me know if this worked for you?

Jennifer Alexander I’m no expert but I would maybe let him use the flying saucer wheel during the time when you’re awake in the evening and he’s up but when you wanna go to sleep maybe take it out and then he’ll have to use the bucket wheel and get used to it gradually over time. Maybe also consider investing in another flying saucer wheel and test it before hand. Xx
HELP! I AM CLUELESS :( Tori I really need your help! Have you ever heard a hedgehog doing this noise??: th-cam.com/video/xouHLW3taN4/w-d-xo.html My hedgehog exactly does the same but mine is female. She acts like as if she wanted to poop (I can see her legs position) and we assumed that she wants to poop but she cannot and it causes pain for her. We took her to the vet already 3 times. First she only got normaflore (which we humans take too), but didnt help, then we gave her anti-biotics + painkiller + laxative + vitamins (baytril, meloxidyl, laevolac, complexamin). We are over these medicines but my hedgie still do that strange noise and seems like she wants to poop but does not poop. BYTHEWAY he poops regulalry and normally, by the morning the cage is full of with normal poop and he eats, drinks, runs the wheel, so she seems totally happy. But she does not stop doing this sound. I do not even know if she is sick or if she just has a new habit to do this sound. Anyone help?:((

other companies sell bigger bucket wheels for bigger hogs :) If you have a petite hog like mine then a 10.5 is pretty big
I replaced the bucket part of a shop bought wheel with a 13 inch sawn off bucket. Took 15 minutes.

I just got a little hedgehog a few weeks ago and she didn't use her wheel either. The solution was that the pet store I got her from gave me a heat lamp for heating and the light was bothering her at night. I swapped to a ceramic heat emitter and literally the first night with it she used the wheel.
My little guy didnt run on his for 3 weeks until one night he just ran on it so you cant force them on they'll just. Sleep or spike up
@@AkiraSieghart that exact same thing happened to me, I thought mine was sick or pregnant because she wasn't active at night and didn't use her wheel, I turned her lamp off one late night and she immediately came out and got super active.

Not sure if you've seen the exotic nutrition wheels in person but they are much bigger in person, my hedgehog turns around with ease in hers (she's no baby either she's 2 yrs old) I've also heard people say hedgehogs can get confused by the holes when trying to exit but mine does so no issue, she literally will be running then suddenly just walks out lol I had the Carolina storm bucket wheel (the other model that isn't clear) and it was great but problem was my hedgehog would constantly slip while running.
Did you need to teach your hedgehog to run on his wheel? I have a bucket wheel but Mr. Oatmeal falls off. He is 6 months and I just adopted him from a family that didn't tell me too much about him. Thank you

Hello my hedgehog just turned 1 last month and he just seems super small for being his age I feed him a pretty well balanced diet . He eats 1 and 1\2 tablespoons of food a day I also try to feed him insects but he won't eat them . He's a pretty picky eater and maybe he's not gaining weight on what he's eating so idk what's wrong with him? Any tips u have will be much appreciated!
I use the wire mesh wheels for my hamsters but I put 3 layers of ducktape on the inside and outside!!

I have that slanted wheel that you recommended and the wheel is pretty big but I don’t really like it just because it is extremely loud and it takes up a lot of space in my hedgehogs cage. And what’s even worse is that I have his cage in my room so I always wake up in the middle of the night to him running so if you have this wheel and you have a hedgehog that lives in your room I kind of would not recommend unless you’re a heavy sleeper. I love your video and thank you for the help I wanted to get a bucket wheel from Etsy but it’s kind of hard to convince my mom to get it because she thinks that it cost way too much money just for a wheel. I do agree that it is quite pricey but if you say that this wheel will last a long time and it’s pretty silent then I really want to get it. I only want the best for my hedgehog and I have spent so much money on him already and I’ve only had him for about two months. Your videos are so helpful so thank you so much because without your videos I don’t think I would have really known what to do with my hedgehog and I wouldn’t really know how to take care of him. Especially since I got him unexpectedly on my birthday. Never thought I would actually have a hedgehog since my parents don’t really like having many pets.

I use a "Silent Spinner" for my Hedgies, it was recommended to me, but boy do they not last. At $50 CDN you'd think they'd last more than a couple months.. I've bought two this year for one of my hedgies.
Kaytee Comfort Wheel for $28 is more appealing right now than $70 for a Bucket Wheel.. lol
I have a Carolina storm bucket wheel and I clean it good but, it takes me a pretty long time... How do you clean your wheel efficiently and fast?
Vinegar! I spray it down with vinegar and let it sit for a bit and then wipe it down, or use a scrub brush and hot water on stubborn spots.
I bought a bucket wheel off of Henry'sHedgehogHaven on etsy and although it is silent and well made, I think it isn't deep enough. My girl will be running full speed and sometimes a back foot will slip off. Disappointing because it was only a few $$ cheaper than a Carolina Storm and I don't think they are well suited for hedgehogs at all. It's only 4" deep

hi, my hedgie does not like any light at all and she always hide under the hut when the light is on. she only comes out when the room is completely dark. i have told she is 5month old now. I know they are nocturnal but when i watch peoples youtube theirs are still walking around the cage with lights. any suggestion?

Our hedgehog person said hedgehog spines don’t bent like a hamster so so recommended no. Wheel plus. Our hedges won’t use box if she’s got a wheel.

OMG that's scared me about the silent spinner wheel as that was what came with my hedgehog cage from the breeder and it attaches to his cage.....crap! I'm based in the UK so will have to see what else I can find. Argh I am super worried and scared now. He has been fine the past month on it...
Us brits can get carolina storm buckets on ebay, and some breeders sell custom built ones at half the price, also on ebay. Easy! Also, do you actually have a cage? Or a vivarium? Cages are a bit cold here unless you run your heating hard!
Doctor Glock thanks, il check eBay. He has a cage with plastic bottom and it’s plenty warm enough as we have a small flat and keep heating low if needed plus he has a heat mat in his cage so heating isn’t the issue just the wheel. Thanks

I got a preowned hedgie with a silent spinner and didn't have any problems, unfortunately she passed away a couple months ago. In our grief my husband and I went walking through a pet store and they happened to have 2 albino hedgehogs (sisters, they snuggle and everything) we just had to take home. Our babies are using the silent spinner and we were planning on getting a second wheel, but now I'm worried. Is the silent spinner really that dangerous?
I think that’s personally up to you to judge and decide if you think you should switch. Those wheels have caused issues for many and have not caused any for others. I personally wouldn’t use them on the off chance something could happen, but that’s just me.

the issue you run into is drainage of urine. Same issues as with sealing a silent spinner, you dont drain the urine. Hogs have been known to get nails caught in wheel covers and have gotten ammonia burns from urine. Its easier to just wipe the wheel down daily than wash a wheel cover

Question (I know is not related) but, should I be concerned that my hedgehog doesn’t seems to care about crickets nor worms? I got hin after him having a year and a month of life, his previous owner wasn’t really a good owner. It was practically a rescue, and he seems to like eggs, fruits and everything that is harmless to him. But those, doesn’t matter if they are alive, he IGNORES them.
I’d keep trying but if he insists on not eating them, I’d just let him eat what he actually will eat. You can add something like cricket powder to his normal food if you’d like for him to get some chitin in his system even though he doesn’t like bugs!(:

we rescuded our hedgehog and she had a wire wheel. We baught her a plastic wheel but she wont use it at all. Had it for over a week and she wont get on it at all. I keep putting her on it and she just gets off. Any suggestions
If it’s the correct size and shape for a hedgehog then the best you can do is just leave it in there and let her decide whether she wants to mess with it or not. You can try a different type if finances allow, you can also put a little food on it to attract her to it. Otherwise hedgehogs tend to just do what they want.
My bucket wheels are not silent at all 😩 but I think it might be the trays under them that came with are too big.

If you give them time they'll start to warm up to it because he took 7 weeks to accutally use it so let your heggie uhh st GET used to it or try doing slight "training"

Try taking the wheel out of the cage put it on the floor (living room for me) and put a yummy treat like a dried cricket or mealworm to let them know its not something to be scared of. But just to let you know this might not work but it worked for me. Please rember to put the wheel back at night. Let me know if this worked for you?
Hello tori i have a bucket wheel for my 10 month old hedgie and i also have a flying saucer wheel he likes the flying saucer wheel and wont use the bucket wheel. The flying saucer wheel keeps me awake so how do i get him to use the bucket wheel.
Jennifer Alexander I’m no expert but I would maybe let him use the flying saucer wheel during the time when you’re awake in the evening and he’s up but when you wanna go to sleep maybe take it out and then he’ll have to use the bucket wheel and get used to it gradually over time. Maybe also consider investing in another flying saucer wheel and test it before hand. Xx

My hedgehog exactly does the same but mine is female.
She acts like as if she wanted to poop (I can see her legs position) and we assumed that she wants to poop but she cannot and it causes pain for her. We took her to the vet already 3 times. First she only got normaflore (which we humans take too), but didnt help, then we gave her anti-biotics + painkiller + laxative + vitamins (baytril, meloxidyl, laevolac, complexamin). We are over these medicines but my hedgie still do that strange noise and seems like she wants to poop but does not poop. BYTHEWAY he poops regulalry and normally, by the morning the cage is full of with normal poop and he eats, drinks, runs the wheel, so she seems totally happy. But she does not stop doing this sound. I do not even know if she is sick or if she just has a new habit to do this sound. Anyone help?:((
