As someone who spent the first eleven years of his life living more or less equidistant between Kennington and Elephant&Castle tube stations, found this episode extra fascinating. As I understand is, the memorial to Michael Faraday on the roundabout between the two surface station buildings houses (or housed) a electricity substation for the tube, which seems rather apt. Absolutely magical moment in the episode for me: ‘Are you going in there?’ … ‘I’m totally going in there.’ … ‘I’m not going in there!’ - brilliant.
Worked at the Elephant in 1996, for the Bakerloo line.. Worked with some really nice colleagues, Jim Tustin, Arnie,Kelvin, Martin Murphy.. We used to have a real laugh, the station group included Elephant, Lambeth North, Waterloo.. Happy memories, bless all those ex colleagues.. I went off to the Central line in 1997, and trained as a Signalman. Until l retired..
The single blue tile is from Kennington Road (now Lambeth North, next station along). They were put into the centre of the E&C patterns as singles or 4 (1/2/1 formation), maybe just to add a splash of additional colour.
I was a student at LSBU in the early 00s and so I’ve walked those stairs many a time myself. It’s funny because when watching the footage of the tiles at King William St I knew I’d seen them before regularly on the network but couldn’t place where… I’m paralysed now so I’ll never walk those stairs again and had I not seen this vid I wouldn’t have worked out where I knew the 4:33 tiles from, so thanks for that! (Also never knew I took the lifts for granted at E&C and Borough when living there… now as a chair user I realise just what gems they are!)
History repeating itself - the 1972 Stock is now the oldest on the system. (I'm showing my age now, but) I can remember when the Bakerloo was previously host to the oldest rolling stock, the 1938 Stock!!And also when the 1972 Stock was brand new, then initially allocated to the Northern Line, ironically alongside 1938 Stock examples.
Literally obsessed with this series i have binged them all over last few days!! Only found it because of the show "Secrets Of The London Underground" so glad i did. I miss living in London and finding all these videos has been a dream come true. Hoping to come to London soon and do one of the tours and meet Siddy, Chris and Laura :)
Not a station that I have used a lot, apart from the very occasional visit to the old market. I always look forward to finding out the history of these old stations & their lost areas.

Fantastic, for me the end of the Bakerloo line was almost always Lambeth North as my Mum's parents lived very close by, in the ex Southern Railways 'Campbell Buildings', Frazier Street, now long since gone. But the Elephant and Castle was always somehow exotic, I'd only seen elephants at the zoo and castles conjured up images of knights on horse back etc. My Dad was a huge railway fan, mainly GWR, But I can remember him showing me the 'end of the Bakerloo Line yards' by lifting me up to see them, no mean feat back then as he was 5'4", but strong with it. Thank you for opening up the hidden history of the Tube network and reviving such happy memories.
Great views of the crossovers. Last year when we were in London it was fun to stand at the north end of the Bakerloo line platforms at Piccadilly Circus and watch the trains passing through the crossover cavern.
Staircase with 111 steps (you know, what's comming, folks 🤓): That would be equivalent to a 6 storey building. The precise numbers, according to my recordings (as always, based on Geoff's 15 storey building video): 6 storeys - 108 steps - 18.36m 7 storeys - 126 steps - 21.42m
Interesting station. I just found out that the wooden-framed roundels (bullseyes in the terminology of the time) are replicas if they lack the registered number on them. Whoever made them did a good job! A few originals survive as well.
Nice tours, couldn’t recall the older station, as not been to E&C for some years, noted from the footage that the area had changed a bit, was surprised to found out that there were hidden parts still around out of view.
The tiles on the stairways next to the handrails that you were commenting on as per their amazing condition: Even more astounding in that the wear of objects in passenger hands dragging across them has apparently had negligible, if any, wear on them. One wonders if the 'golden age' of porcelain tech lies in the past?

The banter, the cheek and passion is brilliant. I'm watching from the other side of the world, in one of the most remote corners of Australia... a town of 40 people, 600 miles from the nearest city. It's such fun to see round a station like this when I've never been there in real life. (Like many north Londoners, I've rarely been very far 'south of the river'.) The old Bakerloo tile colouring was great, it's sad there's so little of it left.
Love the shot from the Cab, the closest I’ve come to getting a visible shot of the inner workings of the tube was on the hammer smith and city line coming into Aldgate East, where you see the lines all separating out and another station or platform as you pass through.. I tried to get pictures while getting strange looks 😂 Great video, keep the coming 😊
I'm pretty sure there was a TV programme back in the 2000s called "The Tube" which showed them replacing all of the tiles on the Northern line platforms I'm sure someone on that programme said "These Tiles were made in exactly the same Factory those ones were...."

We often wear the Underground hi vis in preference to the HL ones especially if we could be going onto track as the Underground ones are a breakaway design.
I’ve climbed those stairs a few times as well! Much preferred the Bakerloo line as I worked at Skipton House next to it for many years. I remember the previous Northern Line station in the 80,s which was equally bland. Wasn’t the original one bombed in the Second World War? I was at the museum depot today and saw the equipment from Elephant 😊

Thanks gang, that was another great episode. E&C is a favourite without a doubt, particular the LG Bakerloo entrance with the plant wall. I visited recently and managed to get a great picture of the Park Royal DD Afternoon Tea Bus as it passed the station. I need to explore the Northern Line side of the station. Loved the episode and it’s set me up perfectly for my second visit to Action Museum Depot tomorrow.

I miss seeing the old Coffee Pot Signals on the Northern Line ( the free standing out ones , some were in the wall ) . useful to look at to know when train was clear to depart, which as a passenger train to train signalling you dont know

PS I meant to ask: how many stations once had underground booking offices for interchange passengers? We've already seen the one at Euston in an earlier episode, and now this one. I've been trying to think where else one might have been required: at King's Cross, Moorgate, or Bank perhaps?
can remember being in the tube stations in the area in the late 60s i find it crazy that 3 people whom werent even swimming in there fathers sack can talk about the stations and get so wrong also my family running a business in the area for over 150 years quite a few mistakes made
The grey staircase would be used as an emergency exit from lift number 1. Inside lift 1 like many older traction lifts there should be an emergency door, the panel with a mysterious Yale lock is the one usually.
So glad you all let me know that Elephant and Castle is actually a train station because I have been seeing London on buses tours on you tube.
