Having driven all 4 and owning a GLA it really depends on what you prefer - Audi looks fantastic and I would say is the best all round when you talk looks, quality, room but I have ordered a BMW X2 as it’s by far the best to drive, seamless gearbox and the most sporty by far - xc40 is also good but lots of body roll and quality is down from the Audi and Bmw- I actually own a GLA which is now looking a tad dated...so yes I went for the sportiest sports utility vehicle in the X2....go and drive them instead of going off looks or badge and then decide which fits your lifestyle.
Personnally I prefer the x2. I enjoy an 118i type car since 2012 (2011 model, 170hp) and I am very, very pleased by it. The successor should have an all wheel drive, a bit more in height, but not much longer. For me the a X2 xdrive with a petrol engine around 200 hp seems to be the logical choice.
From all 4 cars only Volvo XC40 looks like proper small SUV. Mercedes looks like came some decade ago! BMW is the poorest in cabin manufacturing. Audi got the most appealing interior manufacturing, exterior fine as well but I don't see extra difference next to "ordinary" cars, it just sits to low not higher like SUV should. My choice is 1. Volvo, 2. Audi, 3.BMW, 4. Mercedes.
I drove them all when just shopping this segment. Volvo XC40 was far an away my favorite and I couldn't be happier. I would put the Audi Q3 in second, Range Rover Evoque (new model) in third, BMW X1 in fourth. Mercedes needs to do work on the GLA

Great reviews for all 4 models! In my opinion the Q3 is the best allrounder but it will be interesting in the future a comparision test against the upcoming brother , VW Tiguan 2019 facelift. As an old owner of germans cars and now owner of xc40 i agree! I put xc40 first! Before buy it, i tested all those car! i didn't have budget problem and i choose the xc40 because, is better overall! maybe Audi has some interior nicer finish but only maybe! and xc40 fuel consumption is not the best. But here we have to think about that this is a German channel, they couldn't admit that xc40 overall is better than audi q3 and x2! for example x2 is even smaller, the boot is smaller, when you sit inside the dashboard is really poor old fashion looking, with 2 poor analog dial, rear space seats is smaller and is not a proper suv, then comfort ride is way better in xc40. if you watch the comparison on all the other channel around the globe, xc40 wins always hand down against x1 xc2 jaguar e.-pace.... Volvo in all the range offers plug in hybrid, very soon in the xc40 too, something that in the german is a dream, because they are stick with offer diesels which rapresent the past! And first of all, Volvo is the most safety car of those which is a real important thing in a car. Volvo invented safety features which all the others cars makers, later copy.
We are a German channel so we cant admit other cars are better? So why would that be? If you didnt notice, we are an international team, we are going all over the world, we all have different background in heritage, and all cars nowadays are global products. We are presenting everything in a very fair and balanced way, to assume we would favor a car because of it's brand headquarters location is dishonoring our extensive effort.
And a comment on the topic: yes, great comparison, i am also very glad you are starting these kind of videos. As for the results i think the scoring was on point, objective and very reasoned judgement.
More comparison videos, please! You’re my favourite reviewer Thomas :) (I like Ciro DeSiena [south african motor channel] too but you’re far more thorough). Your efforts to show different variants and car colours is much appreciated as it’s not easy to compare those things in real life (I live remotely). I’d love if you could also state whether cars have a full size or a run flat spare, as for non-urbanites this is a huge deciding factor.
Great review. I very much like the new Audi Q3, I have the Volvo D4 R Design XC40 First Edition and love every aspect of it. I wouldn't swap my Volvo but I would change my 2nd car to a Q3.
Thank you for a comprehensive insight into each vehicle. The fact that your video featured the Q3 for 1hr and the other 3 cars for barely 1/2 hr each showed a heavy bias toward the Q3. The Q3 and X2 were lavished with many positive remarks and glowing praise whereas there was an overall air of negativity about the Volvo XC40. Any faint praise of the Volvo was almost begrudging I was disappointed that you decided to thrash only the Volvo around in the snow. Why not the other cars as well so we can assess their performance under similar conditions? The way you hammered it into the bends I got the impression that you were almost hoping that the Volvo would lose its grip and go into a spin. Please do a follow up review where you take the Volvo XC40 up into the summer alps and take the Q3 up in the snow and hammer the crap out of it around the bends. I'd really love to see that In my view the Volvo XC40 wins this easily: Best looking True SUV... not a crossover Beats the Q3 in almost every department except price It even gouges their customers as much as Audi in servicing costs :) Enjoyed your video. Audi Q3 - with the silver exterior color and the blue model's interior. That silver is absolutely sharp looking! I want to like the Volvo, but the exterior styling leaves a bit to be desired - and it reminds me of the bland looking Honda CRV. PS: I'd take the VW T-Roc over all of these, but we can't get it in the USA (for some damned stupid reason).

Because i am engineer and i am big fan of high quality engineering, as a fan of your channel, i will be very happy to see, maybe 5 minutes or so of talking about: - reliability of the car/ brand - making a short list about creative engineering solutions, which the other competitors lack - information about the brand 2nd services - car maintenance and etc. Simply put - adding a little bit of engineering explanations and facts about the car u review, will put you a step above all the reviewers. Because, in my opinion almost all reviews of cars (not just your channel) explain things from consumer point of view, but i dont think that shows the whole picture. I hope my comment does not sound like a critism, but more of a constructive remark and advise from a big fan. You are the best!

Because the X2 looks better. drives better and yes, the interior is boring, but it's working. The Xc40 is fresh, but it looks like a minecraft block with some wheels. Bet you haven't sat in either of these cars, so you have no right to judge the X2. Have a nice day!
The Q3 looks rather uninspiring to me - the only one that stands out a little in exterior looks terms is the XC40. Highly subjective. I do notice that on some the back seats don't fold completely flat as they rise slightly as the sit on top of the back seat (making say carrying a dog in a crate not that practical) which is disappointing given the price bracket.
Notes: 1. The interior of the GLA although it is from 2013 looks really nice, although it looks aged of course and will be updated with the new GLA. Those sporty dials look exquisite 2. Stop saying the interior of the Volvo looks premium and good quality. I have been inside the cabin, I was considering buying it, I really liked its exterior. The minute I got inside I was extremely underwhelmed. 3. The worst cabin for me is the X2’s. Although I like the exterior. 4. New Q3’s exterior looks meh 👎 5. The 3008 should be also in this mix. It’s a really good car with all the technology and safety features for a really good price. So for me if you put the 3008 in the mix: Exterior: 1. XC40 2. 3008 3. X2 4. Q3 5. GLA Interior and features: 1. 3008 2. Q3 3. XC40 4. GLA ( mainly because it shows it’s age) 5. X2 Thank you and goodbye 😀😀

Great comparison I think the new Q3 is lovely inside, I'm not sure about the back end though which to me is starting to look mundane. I personally have the XC40 First Edition D4 R Design, I love the exterior of the Volvo.
I'm trying to decide between XC40 T5 and Q3 45TSFI. Where I'm struggling is in comparing performance and slightly surprised that you seem to rate the Q3 better (specifically for performance) than XC40. My test experience was that Q3 performance was a little disappointing in acceleration with a slightly hesitant gear shift and significant road/engine noise. But the Q3 was very low mileage and so maybe not the fairest of tests. I should maybe try another example with more miles under its belt. But by a rough BHP comparison, the XC40 should win at ~250 while the Q3 is 'only' 230. The other plus for XC40 is that it seems easy to get it Polestar'd (official Volvo software upgrade) to enhance torque (if not much effect on nominal BHP) - would be v interested to see a brief retest of XC40+Polestar, but don't suppose that's very easy to organise.
As an old German car owner, and now owner of xc40 T4 inscription I tell you that xc40 is overall a better package! and between those cars I bought Volvo, which also sales a lot of of this model. Volvo is the Audi first competitor at the moment. Have a look how well done and well design are all new Volvo model! xc40 maybe has not so perfect interior finishing like Audi, but only maybe! Xc40 is a fresh breath in the segment, something that q3 and x2 simply are not. Around the globe in 2018 Audi sales are -22% and Volvo sale are +14%, ok Volvo start from low sales performance but there is a reason why now they do high sales performance.. For example October sales in Italy where I live, Audi has done -20%, Volvo +47% because of their good SUV. It's a fact! After this everyone can buy what they like to buy.
is true is very well done volvo on call.! and what about safety ? then I say Volvo makes the rules on safety! and another example x2 trunk is rubbish for dimension and practicality compare to xc40 one, x2 is not even a proper suv it is a hachback, so no high sitting position too.. Sospension confort is really harder and not as smooth, engine noisy compare to xc40 and interior space and practicality are better in xc40 too. Then bmw doesn't support android auto, why? and where is hybrid ? they are stick on diesel I stop is enough😂 ....@Aryan Ramanand
Audi is the sportiest and trully an excellent car. Interior rocks but I don’t prefer the exterior design. The close second is the Volvo - the only car among them that gives you the real ‘SUV’ feeling. It has some sporty elements, but the focus is on comfort. Real pleasure to drive it. BMW is my #3 - great car but it fails a little bit short compared to Audi. GLA doesn’t even come close to them. My prefered car is Volvo, but that Q3 is 👌👌👌

Nice video as always Thomas, it has really been an eye opener with the GLA to me... 6 months ago I was deciding between a base spec GLA or a top spec Seat Ateca. I finally picked the second one and now that I''ve driven around 20.000km in my Ateca I'm just delighted with the experience. Visually I've always liked very much de GLA but your review just confirmed I hit the nail on the head picking the Ateca regarding quality/price and functionality wise.
I bought a Q3 2023 premium plus with S line and all options possible but still I think this model in the video has more feature … One this model has front headlight washer …not sure why US model doesn’t come with one
You need to compare these SUVs to the upcoming lexus UX. Same class of vehicle competitively priced but with different technologies like hybrid and also the unquestionable quality of the lexus product. The style is also very much different from these. Real contender for me.
Would love to see you do a 3 way comparison between the VW Tiguan R Line, Volvo XC40 R Design and Mazda CX5. Maybe throw a Peugeot 3008 GT Line premium in there too. From the 4 vehicles which would you say is the better one for practicality, build quality, comfort and composure on the road?

Those digital screens are beautyful Audi! But to have them you have to pay 6000 euros extra?? I can buy 6 ipad pros, sorry not good enough.. The german manufacturers are starting to get on my nerves lately... First mercedes puts 2 great digital screens in the A-class... You get excited, then you learn just half the screen will light up in the standard configuration... You have to pay 4000 extra for the whole thing to work properly as it was initialy designed. Then BMW puts a 5'' infotainment screen on the x1 as standard... If you want the bigger one (because it's 2018 not 2007 you know) you have to pay an extra hefty amount of money... I mean it has gotten really out of hand lately... I think Thomas was right to mention it and ask them to stop this stupid strategy

So in addition to your comments on vehicle steering feel, perhaps include some impressions and details on handling and cornering, overall grip and whether a car tends towards under or oversteer, or feels neutral, and braking in those situations. Where I'm struggling is in comparing performance and slightly surprised that you seem to rate the Q3 better (specifically for performance) than XC40. My test experience was that Q3 performance was a little disappointing in acceleration with a slightly hesitant gear shift and significant road/engine noise. But the Q3 was very low mileage and so maybe not the fairest of tests. I should maybe try another example with more miles under its belt. But by a rough BHP comparison, the XC40 should win at ~250 while the Q3 is 'only' 230.
The other plus for XC40 is that it seems easy to get it Polestar'd (official Volvo software upgrade) to enhance torque (if not much effect on nominal BHP) - would be v interested to see a brief retest of XC40+Polestar, but don't suppose that's very easy to organise.
As an old German car owner, and now owner of xc40 T4 inscription I tell you that xc40 is overall a better package! and between those cars I bought Volvo, which also sales a lot of of this model. Volvo is the Audi first competitor at the moment. Have a look how well done and well design are all new Volvo model! xc40 maybe has not so perfect interior finishing like Audi, but only maybe! Xc40 is a fresh breath in the segment, something that q3 and x2 simply are not. Around the globe in 2018 Audi sales are -22% and Volvo sale are +14%, ok Volvo start from low sales performance but there is a reason why now they do high sales performance.. For example October sales in Italy where I live, Audi has done -20%, Volvo +47% because of their good SUV. It's a fact! After this everyone can buy what they like to buy.
is true is very well done volvo on call.! and what about safety ? then I say Volvo makes the rules on safety! and another example x2 trunk is rubbish for dimension and practicality compare to xc40 one, x2 is not even a proper suv it is a hachback, so no high sitting position too.. Sospension confort is really harder and not as smooth, engine noisy compare to xc40 and interior space and practicality are better in xc40 too. Then bmw doesn't support android auto, why? and where is hybrid ? they are stick on diesel I stop is enough😂 ....@Aryan Ramanand
What About driving TDI 150hp?
Audi is the sportiest and trully an excellent car. Interior rocks but I don’t prefer the exterior design. The close second is the Volvo - the only car among them that gives you the real ‘SUV’ feeling. It has some sporty elements, but the focus is on comfort. Real pleasure to drive it. BMW is my #3 - great car but it fails a little bit short compared to Audi. GLA doesn’t even come close to them. My prefered car is Volvo, but that Q3 is 👌👌👌

Nice video as always Thomas, it has really been an eye opener with the GLA to me... 6 months ago I was deciding between a base spec GLA or a top spec Seat Ateca. I finally picked the second one and now that I''ve driven around 20.000km in my Ateca I'm just delighted with the experience. Visually I've always liked very much de GLA but your review just confirmed I hit the nail on the head picking the Ateca regarding quality/price and functionality wise.

I bought a Q3 2023 premium plus with S line and all options possible but still I think this model in the video has more feature … One this model has front headlight washer …not sure why US model doesn’t come with one

You need to compare these SUVs to the upcoming lexus UX. Same class of vehicle competitively priced but with different technologies like hybrid and also the unquestionable quality of the lexus product. The style is also very much different from these. Real contender for me.

Those digital screens are beautyful Audi! But to have them you have to pay 6000 euros extra?? I can buy 6 ipad pros, sorry not good enough.. The german manufacturers are starting to get on my nerves lately...
First mercedes puts 2 great digital screens in the A-class... You get excited, then you learn just half the screen will light up in the standard configuration... You have to pay 4000 extra for the whole thing to work properly as it was initialy designed. Then BMW puts a 5'' infotainment screen on the x1 as standard... If you want the bigger one (because it's 2018 not 2007 you know) you have to pay an extra hefty amount of money... I mean it has gotten really out of hand lately...
