My Dad bought a Ranger Commanche 491VS brand new in 1996 for $32000. I thought that was a lot which it was back then. He still has it. It has been a great boat. Rides great in rough water. Looks like that is the first and last new Ranger or any new fiberglass boat I am going to experience. I might be wrong but I don't believe the new over priced Rangers are the same as the Rangers from the days of Forrest Wood.

Everyone should know that boat prices are jacked up at boat shows. Dealers don't even want to sell just a boat, motor and trailer. They all say it comes as a pkg.. Nitro is the worst. They package a Z20 with a 5" graph in console, a 24 volt t.m., 2 bank charger knowing good and well absolutely no one is going to buy it packaged like that and to upgrade is where the money really adds up. More money means more profit, dealer prep, taxes etc...

As a side not, I just got my first boat last year. A used $500 1436 Jon.
Repaired it for less than $20, Added a 9.8hp motor that is in like-new condition now for $1,300 in total. Added a little less than $1000 worth of aluminum to floor it, front and rear casting deck it, and hatches. Built my own wiring harness for nav lights, stern light, headlights, interior lights, 2 USB charging and one 12V charging port, and more for maybe $100. Got a spanking new 55lb Minnkota Riptide tiller trolling motor for $450. Got the Garmin 94sv UHD2 (side scan) fish finder that I will hardly use but for navigating the shallow salt flats for $1000. Got a spanking new oversized (in case I decide to upgrade) aluminum trailer for $1,600... but sold my pedal drive kayak for $2,100. Then got Millenium B-100 seats and two LiTime batteries (A 100Ah and a 50Ah) from Amazon on the cheap for a black Friday deal.
So far, I am at a little over $4k... and am set up for some serious bass, catfish, crappie, and mainly salt flats fishing. I will be painting soon for not much more. My little ones can come with me at times and the son wants to do some camping trips from it.
With just me in there... she will do low to mid 20s... and get the same in fuel economy. With the kids and me... she gets a little over 18 mph. Still planes fine... and is too fast to fish from. 😆
I have to shut the motor down. I still don't get why everyone needs to go so fast... when there are so many boat ramps around. I would rather save the money and invest it.

It really is not the cost of a boat hull (per foot) that has increased so dramatically. Boats used to be 16-17' in length with a 150 hp motor, one 6" graph and a 12 volt trolling motor. We now have 22' hulls with 4-5 12"-22" graphs plus FFS, 360 live, power poles, 120 lb. thrust 36 volt trolling motors, power poles, steps on trailers, 17-20" trailer tires, 400 hp outboards, fancy livewell systems, lithium batteries, and the list goes on and on. Brian Latimer has a great video breaking this down.

There’s some misleading info in this video…an absolutely loaded to the gills Phoenix will NOT hit 100k. You can get there if you need a 300R, 6 graphs and seat heaters. A normal tourney bass boat will hit 80k in MO. Thats with a 250, 2 12” graphs and a spotlighter. Shop around.

I've noticed several boat manufacturers are offering special package boats at a lower price. However in most cases they have removed items such as Power poles or substituted cheaper electronics. It's like a dog fight; the boat builders, engine manufacturers take a 3 to 6% annual increase and the electronic and accessory companies add locators and trolling motors that cost a couple hundred dollars to make and market them for thousands. The best way for the consumer to control pricing is to stop buying, The prices will come down when their warehouses start to overflow.

If there is people buying $200,000 boats like Randy claims then it’s a very small percentage and the same for $100,000 boats. As long as people sign on the line they won't come down. Twenty years on a boat loan is unreal, the finance company knows they have a high chance at getting it back. I sold bass boats in the late 80's and early 90's and the top price for a Champion or a Skeeter hard loaded was around $18k. I could go 120 months on any new boat over $10k. The only 2 questions a majority of buyers asked was: how fast will it go and how low can I get the payments. We got a lot of repo's over the years.Im sure it hasn't changed much

I'm fishing out of a 1998 zx202c That I bought new. $26000 I've take very good care of it over the years and just upgraded seats and electronics as needed. Original 200hp vmax still hanging on the back. The boat still looks new. I couldn't fathom giving the kind of money they're asking for these boats now. I always thought when I retired I would spring for a new boat but those plans have changed and I am satisfied with one that's sitting in the garage. I also think the price of new boats are going to cause used boat prices to rise sharply.

  • @frankrosenbloom

I do different types of fishing. From river fishing for trout, steelhead and salmon, to small mouth, to lake fishing for Bass, Stripers and Crappie. When we were in the Pacific NW I bought a new Hewescraft Pro V hard top 24' fishing boat for $45,000 in 2015. I sold it a few years later since we were moving away from Puget Sound. That same type of boat is now $140,000. It is inconceivable.
I am also a pilot. From 2007 to 2014 general aviation aircraft increased in price over 400%. When my wife and I were in the market for an airplane, we looked at a new Cessna 182 and simply could not justify, or afford, the $800,000 price tag (yes, even though I'm a doctor, we could not afford that). We purchased a 1973 Cessna 182 in great condition (cost of it new in 1973 was $17,000), low hours on the airframe, and newer engine, for $106,000. (We drive old cars). The Cessna 182 from 1956 to 2024 is nearly identical as far as airframe. Of course the avionics are more advanced. We ended up several years later needing an engine overhaul. It costs about $5,000 for an overhaul of a similar sized truck engine. The overhaul of the airplane engine cost $62,000. Why? Because they can since a new engine is nearly $100,000. Now the kicker! You think electronics for a boat are expensive? Our older avionics have worn out and we could replace it with similar stuff for $50,000 or all modern digital doo-dads for $100,000. We are going with the newer stuff. Back in the day with a little budgeting and some sacrifice on other items nearly everyone who was a pilot and wanted to could own a small plane. Those days are gone.
I wanted a boat since we moved to Upstate SC and I wanted to fish the lakes but already having a plane as a money pit I aimed low. Honestly, I can fish out of any darn thing. We bought a used Tracker Grizzly with a 60HP for $7,000; adequate for my wife and me or a buddy and me to go fishing. I pull it with my 2015 F-150 that has 140,000 miles on it. The boat is not fast, but I can get there and the fish don't know what I'm fishing out of. I do not do tournament fishing. Honestly, not one fish I have caught ever asked me why I don't have a fancy new boat. I cannot justify paying the price of these boats. What these manufacturers of recreational boats and general aviation aircraft do not realize is that eventually, they will price themselves out of existence. I don't even want to get started on housing prices. It is profiteering on the backs of working people. The America of 20-30 years ago is gone and likely will never come back.

He said wealthy people who pay cash. According to him the only customers who finance are buying boats at or below $100k. So it's not just the bass boats. It's the entire boat industry.

Randy I just left a dealer where I offered them 108k plus a 2016 Phoenix 919 Pro XP for a Phoenix 920 Elite II. I still owe a little bit on the trade in boat but all I wanted to get in trade was basically the low end NADA value. They wouldn't do the deal. So I am going to purchase the same boat at the same price with the same trade in deal from a dealer that is 2,500 miles away from here. I told the local guy I really wanted to purchase it from him and I even sat down with the owner of the dealership and made it clear to him that I had someone else that was willing to do the same deal I offered them. I told him I just want to make sure he knew it was the difference between making a little bit of money or no money. He chose no money. I think there is a certain amount of greed in the business. Like they feel they have to make top dollar on every item they sell. Eventually I think they are gonna hit a point where the dealers are all gonna go out of business because we are all running out of the ability to come up with those kinds of funds.

Most of the lakes around me have speed limits and the only place within 100 miles that is over 6000ac and has no speed limit is the Hudson River. Wallenpaupack the 5700ac Reservoir 12 miles from me has a 45mph speed limit and still guys buy 20ft/250hp boats to fish it. The stock market has been at an all-time high, so that means your pension and retirement funds have grown substantially over the past four years and if you manage to save any money and invest it, rather than just blowing it on overpriced, boats and trucks, your net worth is higher now as well. There has been a net addition of jobs in every month of Biden‘s term, the first president in history who didn’t have at least one month of unemployment exceeding job growth . The overall unemployment rate is down to 4.1% a very low rate and inflation has been brought down significantly. The United States, by most importance economic statistics, has had the most successful economy of all of the developed nations in the world over the past four years. Wages have also gone up.
Yes, prices have gone up on most consumer goods. There are three main reasons for this: one, residuals from pandemic shortages; two, wage increases being passed on to customers after the minimum wage stagnated far too low for too long; and three, corporate price gauging.
Housing costs have also increased sharply. A major cause of this is the pandemic materials shortage drove prices up substantially, and now that manufacturing has returned to normal levels, the corporate manufacturers are keeping prices, artificially high to boost their profits, all at the expense of the American consumer.
The irony is that those who have so proudly beat their chest, proclaiming the benefits of unfettered capitalism are also the ones who are whining the most about how everything costs too much these days. When you vote for politicians that are really in the pockets of the corporations and their ultra wealthy owners, you are not anything more than just a vote that has been secured and are not the real constituent . Time and again we have seen that without reasonable regulations, greed will simply take over and ruin an economy.. When Michael Douglas stated “Greed is good!“ In the movie Wall Street, the lesson wasn’t that that statement is true, the lesson is that unfettered greed leads to corruption.
Like most things, the best situation isn’t a black-and-white, all-or-nothing one, but a system characterized by reasonableness and moderation. This is not an impossibility in government. For example, most people would agree that the system of traffic and drunk driving laws in most states are pretty reasonable and are generally fair and successful. Government regulations need to balance preserving individual freedom with protecting the public, and there generally is a happy middle ground where success can be obtained that would satisfy all, but the most rabid extremists on either end of the political spectrum.

Would rather have capitalism than a movement toward socialism which is what has been going on.. Inflation was at 1.9 % when Trump left and it went up to almost 10% during Bidens term. Excessive spending on woke programs, student loan giveaways contributed significantly to this. Energy prices have increased significantly and this contributes to almost everything related to the economy. Cost of building materials and interest rates on housing went up big time. They were warned but did it anyway to appease the radicals in their party like AOC, Bernie Sanders, etc. The Fed had to enact numerous rate cuts to get it somewhat under control.

Of course, their equity won't keep up with their payments so unless they plan to keep it forever, it'll actually cost them money to get rid of it.

If you look back when bass fishing was exploding, there were a couple dozen bass boat companies out there. BASSMASTER every year used to have a new boats issue that covered dozens of new boats. There was a lot of innovation and prices were reasonable to get people into fishing. Today, how many companies are there? Tracker Marine has bought now owns how many? And closed down how many more? The boats I bought in 92, 98, and 02, the companies were bought by them and closed down. There's a huge lack of competition in the boat industry. Then consider the size of boats. How many 16-17 foot boats running 115's are out there now? Hull size and horsepower go together and drive cost. As do the ridiculous sets of electronics on the boats. How about a new tournament format -- boats no larger than 17 foot and no more than 115 HP. No electronics allowed. No power poles. No more than three rods. No more than 10 lbs of tackle. See who can really fish.

You have to look at all the leading economic indicators that measure the strength of the economy. People try to equate things like the price of eggs to the strength of the economy when it really doesn’t have anything to do with it. Those issues are mainly price gouging on the part of the companies. In reality, it doesn’t matter what side of the aisle somebody is on politically presidents have very little to do with the economy. I had in inflatable boat this past summer and fall just to get out on the water for about $100-$120 after buying a portable usb air pump and it was durable. Just paddles but it got me out there. One Sunday early evening at my local lake about a half hour before I went back to the boat ramp, another boat was getting off at the same boat ramp and I just hung out and fished until they were done.
I noticed it was a very nice and sporty looking bass boat with electronics, a nice motor, etc. I looked up the model number of the boat right there on my phone and I about passed out right there on the water.
That sucker was priced I believe at $98,000!!!!! Then of course one of the 3 guys backs his probably $20,000-$30000 truck up to it, maybe even more.
I thought to myself, "Who in God's name can justify, let alone afford to get a basically $100,000 hunk of metal just to go out and fish!!!!????
Now the more I am into fishing and watch fishing videos, it sounds like $100,000 boats are normal atleast right now. I just find that absurd. I would feel like a baller if I ran across an older jon boat with a trolling motor. I would still need something to pull it.

Boat prices are crazy, but cost of these outboard motors is absolutely ridiculous! I'll stick with my O2 Bass Tracker I can take it almost anywhere darn air anywhere

I’m willing to bet a bass doesn’t know if it’s caught on a $499.00 kayak or a $200,000 super deluxe bass boat. It’s always been known that pretty lures are designed for catching anglers…….now it’s boats……human being are sooooooo dumb.
